Network Prompts
ONE: WAKEY WAKEY You're drawn out of your slumber when your tablet emits an earsplitting SCREECH. No amount of shaking it or hitting it will get it to shut up for five whole minutes, but at the very end it cuts itself off what sounds like a piercing scream. Well, that was weird. Maybe you should check in on the network - someone might have an idea of what that was. Or maybe they'll be just as lost as you are. At least you can all be confused together...
TWO: DON'T LET THE BEDBUGS BITE... It's past curfew, and you've been locked in for the night. But for some reason, you just can't manage to get to sleep. Nightmares giving you grief? General insomnia problems? Well, at least you've got the network to keep you company. Maybe you can get someone to tell you a bedtime story.
Action Prompts
THREE: INCONVENIENCE STORE Congratulations, you've managed to stumble upon the Mallard River Market! But you're not alone. Among the shelves of junk food (just as well-stocked as you would expect from any normal store) you'll find one - or more! - other people there with you. Here's hoping you're not both after the same box of Frosted Toaster Pastries, because things could get ugly fast. Don't linger too long, either; at 7PM, you'll be compelled to leave whether you want to or not and will only have about an hour to find somewhere to take shelter...
FOUR: RUN RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN It's late. It's cold. There's a bunch of snow around you and you can sort of make out vague shapes in the distance that might be buildings, but in these conditions it's hard to tell. Regardless of what they are, though, you're going to want to hustle - if it hits 8PM and you're still outside, you're not going to make it through the night. Perhaps that person up ahead can help you? Or - if you're already safe and sound - maybe you should head outside to get that poor soul struggling outside in to shelter before they freeze. Good luck!
[Alex isn't the only one running low on supplies. The shitty cafeteria food Jay got from the school lasted him a good while, but now he's almost out. Not that he wouldn't be checking this place out in any case - there might be more SD cards to be found here.
Hearing someone else moving in the store, he raises his hands in a calming gesture, ready to announce that no, he's not a creepy shadow creature and there should be enough food in here for two so there's no need to fight.
Of course, that plan is instantly forgotten when he hears the familiar dulcet tones of Alex Kralie. Instead, he opts for plan B, also known as get the fuck out of here now. Unfortunately, he does the Jay thing and manages to stumble over a stack of boxes by the doorway, letting out a swear that might just be audible to someone in the aisles.]
(yes. yes jay does try, very hard, and that's the really sad part.)
The crash instantly sends him on high alert, ratcheting up his paranoia. Something is in here with him, and it's nothing good. Alex sets his bag down and then quickly, quietly creeps through the aisles towards the source of that racket. He gets to the door and takes a moment to steel himself before suddenly busting out of cover, club raised.
He's about to swing down when his brain finally catches up with his eyes, and it clicks just who's in front of him.]
[Well. On the plus side, this is already officially going better than the last time they met.
On the not-so-plus side, wow what a rude way to greet an old not-actually-a-friend. Wow.]
Alex.
[He scrambles to his feet, awkwardly shuffling back out of club reach while attempting to reach into his bag for a knife. Goddammit he knows he's got that thing somewhere in there where is it.]
I, uh. I didn't know you were in here.
[It's a stupid thing to say, and he is fully aware of that, but it felt like he needed to say something.]
Right. That's why you tripped all over yourself the moment you heard me.
[smdh so much.
Alex watches disdainfully at Jay scoots away from him. Though he doesn't move after him, his stance makes it clear that he's ready to fuck things up if Jay's gonna start shit. The alarm bells in his head are still ringing. He really Does Not Like the way Jay is rifling through that bag.]
Don't do anything stupid.
[he just wants to head back and grab his supply bag and go man why is life so hard and full of meddling kids]
[He stops, eyes flitting nervously from Alex to his bag and then back again. He really does not want to be unarmed in front of the guy who killed him, but. He also really doesn't want this to actually turn into a fight.
After a moment of indecision, he reluctantly pulls his hand out of the bag.]
Look, Alex. I just want to grab some food and leave. So.
["please don't murder me again" is left hanging unvoiced but strongly implied.]
[For the first time in ages, Jay and Alex actually agree on something. Praise god hallelujah and stop the presses. It's a miracle.
He's not entirely sure how to proceed from here. He left his bag further back in the store, and he needs to get it before he leaves. But that means letting Jay out of his sight and turning his back on him, and there's no way he feels safe enough around the guy to do that.]
Don't move.
[yeah no there's no way Jay's gonna listen to that, but he wants to feel at least a little in control of the situation as he backs off to pick up his stuff.]
[Yeah no as soon as there is no longer a chair leg pointed his way, he's sidling further into the store but away from Alex, holding his bag up to his body like a completely ineffectual shield.
He's still not sure if he should be trying to pull out the knife or not, but leaves it for the time being. Maybe it will somehow miraculously be possible to end this encounter without any violence at all. Almost like those good old times before people were getting murdered left and right and he wasn't filming everything-
Shit. It occurs to him that he should really be filming this. Running into Alex is definitely important enough that he needs to have it recorded in case he forgets.
Fortunately, he's got his tablet in a pocket so he can easily pull it out without needing to mess with the bag. Small blessings, etc.]
[He feels hyper aware of every sound as he picks up his bag and returns to the store's entrance. Jay has, predictably, not followed instructions and isn't in immediate sight. We are all completely blown away by this stunning revelation!
As he puts his hand on the door handle, there's a brief flicker of uncertainty. Is it really going to be that easy? He can just take his stuff and go? He doesn't want to fight here. There's no point. They're both dead and taken to wherever people like them go. It's over and done.
Alex takes one last look around. Through the window he can see both his and Jay's tracks through the snow. It's starting to get late, and in a few hours he needs to be inside.]
