Network Prompts
ONE: BUMP IN THE NIGHT It's dark out, and congratulations - you're inside! What's not inside, you might ask? Monsters. Shadowy monsters that have surrounded whatever house you've taken shelter in. They can't get in... or can they? From time to time, the doors and the walls creak as if under an unbearable pressure.
Who can sleep when it's like this? Maybe you should take to the network to find a distraction. Or maybe someone has advice for getting rid of those things.
TWO: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD We mourn the loss of those who have died in the time between the last announcement and this one:
...is that your name on that list? It might be. Maybe you should let the others know you're not actually dead. Or, you know, if you happen to spot the name of someone you know and love on there, it might be time to ask around and see if anyone knows what happened to your dearly departed...
Action Prompts
THREE: KYRIE ELEISON You've found yourself in a small chapel, complete with bolted-down pews, an altar devoid of symbols, and stained glass windows depicting various saints. It's quiet... one might even say dead quiet. Which is a really awful pun to be making, considering if you follow the stairs down to the basement you'll find a morgue.
Explore to your heart's content, but you'll be forced out at 7 PM. Hopefully you don't find any unfortunately familiar faces among the dead.
FOUR: LIGHTS OUT Against all odds, you've managed to make it to shelter for the night. You pull the door shut behind you and turn to look at your surroundings - and that's when you see it. A ... person. Is it a person? It's hard to tell, because a moment later, you're plunged into darkness.
...better hope that's another unfortunate visitor to Norfinbury you've been locked in with, and not something more threatening.
[Okay, so the sound of something outside has him uneasy. He's fourteen. He's no longer scared of monsters under the bed anymore. But the noises seem to be getting closer, more insistent as he hears them overhead on the roof, or hearing them seeming to attempt to get in through the walls. He's used to quiet. Or sleeping to the slight hum of a fan at the most. This thudding is hardly so constant and regular so it keeps causing him to jolt awake each time.
Eventually, he gives up on the idea of getting much if any rest and sits up, still huddled in the blankets and blearily rubbing at his eyes, hair possibly even more of a mess of a mop than usual as he turns on the tablet. May as well ask if anyone else is experiencing this, or try get some sort of distraction from it, turning the device to video. Running a hand through his mess of hair as he semi-pouts and glances when there's another thud on the roof.]
I don't suppose there's really anything we can do from inside to make these things go away. It's really not helping in the whole 'sleep' area, suffice to say. Anyone else dealing with this or just want to keep me company while I try ignore them? I can't be the only one awake, right?
[Or do something about them, if that might be possible from inside. Either way.]
Action: Prompt Four;
H-hey--?
[Hiro doesn't get the best look at the figure, before it goes dark, as he turns from shutting the door behind him now he's finally at least made it inside. He's not sure if he quite recognizes them, whether it is someone else stranded in this mess and trying to find shelter or....or someone less friendly? Either way, if there's anything resembling a makeshift weapon nearby, he's going for it. Even if this might mean potentially brandishing a broom in the uncertainty.]
[Tadashi's video feed is clicked on almost immediately, answering the call an instant after it's been placed. He's not hovering -- honest. It's just that with an unknown distance still separating him from his brother, he jolts awake at every quiet pling from the network.
He yawns, trying to cover it up at the last moment before offering Hiro a wan smile. He tries to keep the worry out of his expression, but it still lingers behind his eyes.]
Hey, bonehead. Can't sleep?
[He scuffs one hand back through his hair, his hat still perched on his backpack from when he first started trying to get some sleep.]
You've got the door blocked off, right? That will keep them out.
[He hopes. Tadashi won't voice his fears to Hiro, though.]
You're just going to have to ride it out. We're gonna push further south when the doors unlock -- see if we can spot what you described this morning.
[Gesturing to the direction of the wall as there is another thud in the background, briefly glancing over to that direction before turning his attention back to Tadashi. He can tell in spite of the attempts at reassurance that his brother is still worried. Tadashi might be able to fool some others that don't know him as well, but Hiro knows the little tells having grown up with him, after all.]
Well, the door locked like it does every night. I'm assuming that means it is secure because I haven't yet figured how to open it or unhinge it or anything. I figure that means whatever is out there can't get in either the same way I can't get out. Reckon I have a few more days of supplies left, at least. Too hopeful to ask if there might be gummy bears around, I'm guessing.
[Distractions. Normal talk. He can manage this. Without completely breaking in front of his brother. At least, he doesn't want to yet. In person, eventually he's sure Tadashi will piece things together. But not yet. He wants some time to figure things out first. Rather than hopefully not just blurting it out randomly.]
[Tadashi can't really blame Hiro. It's not like he was able to sleep when those creatures first appeared. It had been the week from hell. The days that his group was trapped and unable to make a break for another shelter had been the worst -- the longer they stayed in one place, the higher tempers and terror had flared.
That in mind, he frowns at Hiro's assumption.]
They might not be gone by morning. Better safe than sorry. I need you to find whatever you can and block the door, okay? And don't even think about going out there until you're absolutely sure it's safe.
[That's not going to keep Hiro calm, though. It's just for Tadashi's peace of mind. He's not there to look after Hiro, so for now all he can do is give instructions and trust his brother will follow his advice. He hesitates, but in the end he can't leave it on a serious note.]
Actually, I did find some snacks back at the last convenience store we hit up. There might have been something bear-shaped in what I grabbed. I just don't know, Hiro. It's a little dark to check right now.
[His tone is teasing as he lifts his weighted-down backpack for emphasis, rubbing his chin and looking from the bag to Hiro.]
No idea how long they'd hang around. I'll see what I can manage. Bound to be something around I can try push to block the door. You'll let me know with the tablet when you're nearly here right? So I can move it to let you guys in. Assuming these things are gone by then, I mean?
[But until then, Tadashi's advice probably is the best. Hiro could easily come up with some security, but here he is much more limited in regards to what he has available, the resources he has to work with to figure much of anything. Still, he can at least try.]
You -- really? You're not just messing with me here.
[It's times like this, one can easily be reminded just how young and enthusiastic Hiro can be. The way his face all but lights up in spite of their circumstances when Tadashi teases him over having his favourite treat.]
Absolutely. I'll keep my video turned on tomorrow, if you want.
[Tadashi grins a little, lifting one eyebrow slightly.]
I can't guarantee we'll talk about anything interesting, but...
[If those things were still around when they made it to Hiro's location, it was going to be tricky. Depending on the timing, they might need to take shelter nearby and come up with a strategy to distract the creatures long enough to grab Hiro and run. Tadashi didn't plan to leave him there by himself for any longer than absolutely necessary.
Tadashi's thoughts are interrupted by Mochi bumping up against his bag. Amused, he tilts the camera to show the fat cat while he digs through his bag and lifts the gummy bears out.]
Guess Mochi can see better at night than I can. Look what he just found.
[Or, well. As best Hiro can from his position of being stuck inside for now until Tadashi gets here. But he's trying not to worry too much just yet. It's enough to be able to see and hear his brother over the tablets like this for now. Even that much is more than he could have imagined or hoped for.]
But? Mochi? Wait, you tease!
[Because of course if Tadashi is around that means Mochi is? Hiro doesn't question it, if simply relieved for another familiar face, even if it is the family pet. Let alone the confirmation of his brother stocking up on gummy bears. Which is totally the other majorly important fact and reason Tadashi needs to hurry. As if he needed any more reason that seeing his brother again to get all impatient.]
[Tadashi shrugs a little as he moves to heft the bobtail into his lap and scratches behind Mochi's ears as he smiles down at him. He glances back up, and it's clear he feels a little bad that he has Mochi with him. Because, according to what he believes to be true, that means that Aunt Cass has been missing her cat as well as her nephew for the past two weeks.]
Yeah, I've been carrying him in my messenger bag everywhere.
[He makes a face as reaches up to squeeze the muscle at his shoulder.]
I never really appreciated just how fat he is before now. Don't let me forget. The instant we get home, we're forcing Aunt Cass to put Mochi on a diet.
I do not pity you on that. He's heavier than he looks.
[Even if Hiro could reflexively reach down and literally throw the cat up the stairs at one point. That cat has put on weight. They both -- all three of them know it.
But then Tadashi mentions home. This could be some sort of chance to ask, he's heard by now that some people are from different....times back home. Obviously Tadashi would be, in comparison to him. But he can't bring himself to talk about that. Not yet. Not unless Tadashi potentially brings it up first, because he's not sure if he might ever actually be ready to bring up the fire. Knowing that must be what Tadashi would be going back to. It hurts. It's not fair. But at the same time, at least he has Tadashi here now.]
[ Jim freezes. He hadn't expected company, so his only weapon - a bit of pointed glass sticking out of a washcloth - was still in his pack along with everything else. He'd never be able to get to it in the dark without slicing his hands to ribbons in the process; best case scenario he could throw the bag at whatever it was.
He hesitated because it had sounded human, and nothing else he'd encountered here had. ]
[The figure doesn't seem that large. The voice still seeming fairly young, perhaps not that much older than Hiro himself. There's a pause as he shifts closer, slowly, cautiously as he grips the broom but lowers it slightly. Better to be cautious than sorry he wasn't, from what he gathers about this place, how worried Tadashi is over him.]
Hey. Don't suppose you have a light? A torch or something? Tablet is the best I have.
[There's a pause, a shuffling slightly as Hiro gets the device from his hoodie, the faint glow from the screen illuminating his face.]
[ Jim relaxes when he sees something person-ish. None of the monsters he's encountered so far were realistic enough to pass as such. Even if the guy has bad intentions, he's no bigger than Jim. Jim can probably take him.
He eases his tablet out of his duffle and holds it up to show his own face. ]
I haven't found anything to make a fire out of yet. Or anything else useful.
Edited 2015-07-26 23:49 (UTC)
could see these two either getting along amazingly or terribly tbh,
[The other figure is probably a bit shorter than Jim if anything, the mop of hair notwithstanding, given his younger age. He's just cautious, wary. But relaxing a bit more once he gets something of a better look to Jim, assuming the other doesn't have a weapon.
After all, if there's only so many buildings to take shelter in, is there really any surprise that others might happen across the same one to sleep and escape the weather?]
At the very least, it's shelter. We're not outside. There's blankets. We can manage if we have to without one, if we can't find supplies for a fire.
[Hiro's always been very uneasy around fire anyway, since the night of the expo. Even if it would be warmer and give more light.]
if anyone could accidentally on purpose blow up snowhell...
[ The flicker of the tablet shows a wry smile and relieved blue eyes set in a face only a smidge older than Hiro. It's faint, but he's still got his duffle over one shoulder and is using both hands to make the tablet/flashlight cooperate. Hiro's optimism is unfamiliar, but maybe catching a bit; just because the last dozen nights had been miserable didn't mean this one had to be. ]
Best thing to do is explore before we go to sleep. We might find a firestarter, or the house might have running water.
Hiro and Jim would manage. Somehow. With their combined level of sass and sarcasm. Oh yes.
Running water. The things you take for granted back home, right? I don't know if it's the weather messing with the pipes or this place just otherwise sucking that much, but honestly.
[Hiro rolls his eyes, some air puffing a little to play with some of his bangs as he gestures irritably with the hand holding the broom. This place was so frustrating, and he hasn't been here nearly so long as some of the others around.]
it would be adorable right up until everything was on fire
Running water, heat, food that's not in these weird... packaging... things. [ Jim ticks them off on his hands as he goes. ] I tried to tell whoever's running the place last time, but you know, they just weren't interested.
Everyone facepalms and asks who introduced these brats even.
Of course. That would be too convenient for them to listen and throw us a bone in a situation like this. Clearly. But...I'll help look around. See what we can find. Any food or supplies is better than none at least.
[Putting the broom down as he attempts to scan the room a little with the meager light of his tablet, taking more in now he isn't immediately distracted and on guard by Jim's presence.]
Might as well be what you said in that recording you just made.
[ Now and then Jane can hear something outside the house she's hunkered down in too. She kissed sleep goodbye at the first disturbance. Unlike with the walkers back home, she isn't sure what tipped off these unwelcome visitors. Being still and silent hasn't made them lose their interest, and neither has staying away from the windows. Still, she continues to be cautious, only checking her tablet underneath her coat with the screen dimmed as low as possible. ]
I don't think they're going anywhere - been hours since they showed up here. At least no one's said anything about any attacks yet. Just shadows, and noise.
[ But just because no one's been murdered live on the network doesn't mean she didn't help herself to a chair leg. ]
yeah. hopefully nobody is actually out there and dealing with them in person outside. the doors must run on some sort of timer to lock like this every night. it's good for keeping those things out. but also means if one of us don't make it in time, we're stuck out there too.
[Because of course there is always some catch. Naturally. But Hiro is doing much the same, if not perhaps all the more slightly paranoid from how protective and worried his brother is being, not to mention staying in the same building for a couple of nights now. Cabin fever slowly starting to sink in.]
If there is anyone out there, nothing we can do about it now. [ It's harsh, but it's the truth. If someone didn't make it indoors before the lock-down, they're on their own, and there's no point in worrying about it. She's not used to pulling her punches. The world was ripped out from under her way before she found herself here. ]
i guess. we can't open these doors to let them in once it locks.
[Which is both a relief and terrifying on the other hand, to be honest. It's keeping those creatures out, but at the same time they don't have the freedom to choose to let others in if they might get back late.]
but. no. i haven't been here too long yet. couple days or so. why?
sorry about the late reply! i didn't have wifi thursday - sunday.
Which means there's no point worrying. [ It's been a long time since it occurred to Jane to soften her words before she said them. What was the point, with the world gone to shit? She's used to saying what needs to be said, without wasting time beating around the bush.
Small talk (any kind of talk, really) doesn't come easy, but she's trying. ]
We get an hour warning every night. Plenty of time to get indoors. [ And that's as reassuring as she can bring herself to get. ]
I'm just making conversation. I thought you wanted company? [ She's snippy, but relenting, but only because she reminds herself to be. so long as someone gets to shelter within that hour. you're right though, sorry. i'm hiro.
