[Shinji has, for the most part, been unresponsive throughout the day. While having Asuka helped ground him, he can't process what's been going on. This wasn't Japan. It was cold. He was freezing and no matter where he looked, he had the feeling they were being watched. He's kept his head down, meekly following whatever Asuka tells him to because he doesn't know what to do. This had to be a dream, right? This wasn't real, right? He was going to wake up at any time, they'll be back at Misato's, and everything will go back to the way it should be and he'll be told the right thing to do--
But he doesn't wake up. Night falls and Shinji curls up beside Asuka, shivering and miserable. He doesn't understand why they're here. What did they do-- what did he do-- to deserve this?
He's deep in the clutches of an uneasy dream when her scream jolts him awake. Adrenaline bursts through Shinji. Reflexively, his hands clutch around controls that aren't there as he jerks his head up, eyes darting as he tries to find the source of terror.
