Network Prompts
ONE: THE THINGS THAT CRAWL IN THE NIGHT You haven't thought about the spiders that roam Norfinbury in awhile. But then something happens one night. It's after lockdown and you're all alone, but you can't sleep. How can you, when every time you try to drift off you hear the sounds of scurrying little legs? The sound gets louder, it multiplies, until its all around you. But where--where? Maybe they bugs are beneath the wallpaper, maybe they're under the floorboards. Maybe they're in the furniture. Or maybe, maybe they're just in your head. The tablet is the only thing you have to turn to. Even if you're the only one experiencing these sounds, maybe someone can talk you down, convince you that it's just a brief episode of paranoia that you can unwind from.
TWO: IT WAS ONLY JUST A DREAM You wake up late into the night. You dreamed you were crawling through a tight, closed space, your body scraping against the metal, and know you don't belong here. Where are you going? The vent is dark, and you don't have your tablet with you. You think there's someone behind you, but you can't be sure. You pull yourself forward with one of your arms. And then you pull yourself forward with your other arm. And then you pull yourself forward with a third--one you shouldn't have. One that doesn't even belong to you.
Once your eyes are open you can still feel those extra limbs extending outward from your body, thin spider legs grabbing at air, clawing for purchase--but then the feeling passes. You're just you, and now you can't get back to sleep. Maybe someone else had the same dream?
Action Prompts
THREE: RATE YOUR DISCOMFORT You and your traveling companion have found an easy routine. Travel, search, hunker down, try to find a semblance of warmth and comfort for the night before you sleep and start all over again. You don't question when they offer you the last of the fresh fruit from your last run to the grocery store. It's a kind gesture, and perhaps you intend to return it the next chance you get. But the food sits uncomfortably in your stomach.
You can feel it, can't you? It's not churning inside of you but moving, squirming, crawling. Nothing relieves it. It doesn't hurt but you feel sick, you find yourself shuddering, but when you show your companion your shaking hands they don't seem to notice the way that your skin ripples with something unseen just underneath. Whatever you ate isn't just in your stomach. It's inside. You can feel it tickling up your throat, reaching up up up.
FOUR: IT SLEEPS BENEATH THE SNOW You're almost there: the building is just ahead of you, and just in time for lockdown. The coast is clear...at least, that's what you think before the ground around the building begins to move. The snow shifts, snaking in a wide, giant circle around it. And then the monster reveals itself, snow falling from its hardened exoskeleton in chunks, a giant centipede-like anomaly with too-human eyes and hundreds of legs like stilettos decorated with razor blades.
It has you and your traveling companion in your sights--you're going to have to think faster than it can reach you if you want to get around it and into the house before the door locks and dooms the both of you.

yosuke hanamura (persona 4)
[Yosuke has to wait a long time for his gasping breaths to slow down before he dares pick up his tablet. Even then, when he does start a new recording, he sounds winded and agitated, his voice strained and pitched higher with feigned humor.]
Whoa, haha, I th-think I ate some really bad food. Like, um, major nighttime indigestion-level food. Anyone else eat something weird today?
[Not that what just happened was anything remotely like eating an entire pack of Pringles before bed and having fever dreams about drama stars for the rest of the night.]
...um, it's way too cold here for b-bugs to survive, right?
( 3 )
[Okay, no.
He has definitely eaten something weird this time.
No, not weird, but bad - horrible, even - no, worse, horrifying, but now it's inside him and moving around and there's nothing he can do. Something's in there. It's trying to get out, poking at the bottom of his esophagus like carbonated heartburn.
Yosuke had collapsed a few minutes ago and stayed hunched over, clutching his stomach, oblivious to whatever his companion was doing in response to the apparent emergency. But now he jolts up, teeth gritted tightly, eyes bloodshot and wide.]

Tohru Adachi | Persona 4
Okay, okay, okay. Drop whatever-it-is you're doing right now and listen. Just - humor me for a second.
[The shaky, nasally voice at the other end of the network falls silent to let his surroundings do the talking for him. You can easily hear the wind outside, the rattling of the house, the chattering of Adachi's teeth, the faint hum of the tablet running in the background... But there may or may not be something else you might hear as well.
At least, that's what Adachi is hoping to determine. When next he speaks, he does so with a shrill sort of whisper.]
Do you - Do you hear that? Please tell me I'm not the only one that hears that...!
[FOUR | ACTION]
[Well. This is happening.]
Holy...!
[There's a memory from back home that he'd rather not think about right now. A time when Nanako-chan decided to show him an earthworm she'd found when tending to the garden just outside her house. She'd been so startled to see just how extreme his reaction had been - after all, her teacher had been telling her all about what amazing creatures worms were. And not just the worms, but insects as well. How important they were for a healthy environment.
Staring down that - that creature that's just unearthed itself from the snow up ahead, Adachi would like nothing more than to take that stinking teacher and throw them right at the beast. Show them just how wrong they really were. But all the detective can do is stare at the monster, hand clapped over his mouth, practically paralyzed with horror. He feels like he's going to throw up.]

Is it normal to have dreams that feel real? I mean dreams so real you almost have to wonder if they were dreams at all.

[ kit and his super lucky companion have been traveling all day in search of new shelter. unfortunately they'd set out on a path devoid of much of anything and by the time the sun starts to dip lower and lower in the sky, kit's worried.

….however, again, shortly after it turns out they're actually not really in luck at all, because that sure is one hell of a terrifying monster blocking their path. kit freezes (hurhur) in his tracks, eyes wide. ]

Hello? Is anyone awake right now?
I just had a dream I was a spider. I think this place is getting to me.

["Sunshower", as the young woman calls herself, is deciding that there are in fact drawbacks to the Bohemian look. Namely the look doesn't do anything for her when trudging through knee-high snowdrifts against freezing winds. She's relieved to finally see a building, but as she gets close, one of the high piles of snow moves and shifts, revealing what can only be called a monster. Well, shit.]
Oh, god. Uh. Okay, this is new. Don't- don't freak out. Don't freak out. What'd everyone say about the creatures here?
[Probably things that involved being able to feel her hands.]

@igniscientia
[Nightmares were common enough for Ignis. They were common for everyone who had gone through the things he had, and were the way he was. Countless articles had told him so. Even then, his nightmares always had pretty distinct themes and players.
So this was a stand out. He sits for a couple moments before locating his tablet to make a voice post. His voice is business-like, but the unease is close under the surafce.]
My apologies, my siblings in circumstance. I know it’s the middle of the night, but I can’t seem to ease my anxieies. I’ve never had nightmares like these before arriving here. And whilst unpleasant, they always made sense.
What I mean is— They were never actually worse than things that had already happened.
I can’t say I’m looking for comfort exactly, but I would like to know if it’s common.
Four
I’m going to assume that isn’t good.
[Ignis turns his attention towards the anomaly easily enough with all the sound it was making. And the distance the snow was coming from it- Not good. This thing was huge. If only he had a weapon or a handful of magic. If only. And if only he could actually see it or sense it he could make a better plan.
His jaw sets as his mind scrambles for an answer.]
On my count, I’ll take it’s attention. You must get to safety and warn the others on the network. I’ll lead it away and catch up if I can.

so im not claiming to be any sort of entomologist here
because quite frankly
who goes all the way through college to study bugs
like
oh yeah im a lawyer
im a doctor
we graduated harvard
oh yeah me too
oh yeah what did you study
bugs
now little tim stand up and tell the class what do you want to do when you grow up
bugs
lets not pretend there isnt a little bit of a fetish that comes into play when you decide to dedicate your life health and worldly fortune to studying jiminy fuckin crickets
and what do you do after that
work in the fields
work in museums
or is it like marine biology where shit is so competitive you end up working in a pet store bagging up fish for the sole consumption of greasy little toddlers
so like
you become an exterminator right
your one true passion is bugs and now your career is based on hunting them down and killing them for peanuts
which brings me to my next point
are there exterminators here
like hired exterminators
because thats top priority on a very small list of things we need to improve the overall atmosphere of this godforsaken snow hell
maybe one of you guys was an exterminator back home
in which case my bad
totally didnt mean anything i said earlier
especially the fetish stuff
that was a sick prank
anyway
termites
how do you know if a place is abundant in them
is it not too cold for an abundance of bugs
and when you hear bugs is the sound like
visceral
like the sound of chewing permeates your inner being so much so that it feels like these tiny little insectoid piranhas are actually feasting on your bone marrow
cuz i kind of feel that right now
and i assume thats normal
as with most things here

whats the problem bambi did the hunter come to murder your mom again
doesnt that fucker know when enoughs enough
whats he going to do hunt down her carcass and open fire
doesnt he know its no use shooting a dead deer
fucker thought it was just corporeal punishment for horses but if its got hooves and its deceased the clause still carries
now hes off to nature jail
which is like regular jail but the bars are made of tree branches and the squirrels come to judge you
you might think chomper there is just chewing his walnut but take a good hard look in those beady little eyes
he knows what youve done
he knows your sins
but while im mixing ants for antlers lets get back to the point
no theres not actual insects here
but yes there are things that are like bugs
as in spiders
robospiders
the admin has a stock of them hiding out beneath the town or something for all her weird admin needs
and why youre hearing them no i dont know but its probably not good
the weird shit here rarely is

okay look, there's a lot of things i can put up with. freezing my ass off in all this snow? fine, sure. whatever the hell keeps roaming around at night? little less okay, but i've got this, don't you worry.
8 million spiders, though? i'm gonna have to draw the line there, as i'm sure any reasonable person would.
[ He'd already tried tearing up a few things to get at them, reasoning that if he squished a few, perhaps the rest would get the idea and leave-- this hasn't at all gone how he'd planned, and every upturned piece of furniture stands (or lays, really) as testament to how that had gone. For once, force was not the answer, and now he has to rethink the question in-between complaining about it. ]
we don't have an exterminator or something around, do we. that'd be too convenient, which doesn't seem to be a word anybody around here even knows.
how the hell do spiders even survive out here?? this is bullshit.
prompt : three.
[ The fruit had been a peace offering of sorts, taken cautiously and subtly inspected before he'd even dared to try it. It was a peach, soft-skinned and a little worse for wear, but after having to scrounge on his own for a few days, Vasquez wasn't about to turn down food offered so freely. Joke's on them for thinking he'd return the favor, though-- he'd make a show of considering it just to keep relations above-board, but he knew exactly where that was going. His temporary companion could mark that one down as a loss, whether they'd realized it yet or not. ]
[ For all the sticky sweetness, the peach brought something foul with it. Vasquez hadn't noticed when the symptoms had started creeping up on him, softly and gradually-- something was far from right, and the twisting in his gut was enough of an indication that what was already bad was about to get far worse. But despite his efforts to show what was wrong, nothing was coming across-- either his companion was about as observant as a rock, or it was all in his head. The second option was unacceptable. ]
[ The sickly feeling is back with a vengeance, slithering its way through his throat like an agitated python-- he retches on instinct, pressing the back of his hand to his mouth as though it was going to help at all. Rather than get a good eyeful of the disgusting way whatever's gotten inside him twists under his skin, he screws his eyes shut, scowling under his hand. That's what he got for trusting anybody out here-- there was probably a parasite of some sort in the fruit, just waiting for its chance to kill something. And unfortunately for Vasquez, it looked like he'd been the sucker after all. Pale and clearly nauseous, he straightens up, doing his best to keep his dignity intact despite how utterly awful everything felt right now. ]
Yeah, whatever you were planning with-- that? The fruit? Fuck you. [ He runs a hand through his hair, trying to mask how bad he's shaking. Keep your cool, Vasquez-- he has to remind himself not to just start trying to beat the shit out of the person before him, and it's a little hard. They might have some kind of remedy, or at least information on whatever it was they'd done to him; either one could mean the difference between being rid of this thing or having to deal with it for longer, so he'd have to play it a little safer than that. ]
You're not gonna get the best of me. So why don't you just-- [ Another lurch, and he doubles over, effectively ruining his building efforts at being intimidating. It just...really isn't his day, is it? ]
