Network Prompts
ONE: IT WON'T BE LONG NOW... Well, you made a mistake. You spent too long searching around, or you ran outside near the end of the day for just one more thing, and now you've been locked out. You can search around all you want, but the best shelter you can hope for is pressing against the side of a sealed up building. You do still have your tablet, though. Maybe someone on the network can give you some advice, or at least some comfort while you wait for hypothermia to set in.
TWO: CABIN FEVER Maybe you didn't want that mistake of getting caught outside to happen again, but now you've ended up staying too long in one location, and cabin fever has set in. Maybe you're taking to the network to try and ignore the hallucinations. Maybe you want to tell everyone that you've figured out they're all in on your kidnapping. Maybe you ended up wandering off and now you'd really like to know if anyone can check back in the place you were at for your pants.
Action Prompts
THREE: AN UNEXPECTED MEETING You're going about your business searching what seems like it might be an especially promising house--it's fully intact and there's even a working fireplace with some wood! It looks like someone else has the same idea, though, and you've run into them in the middle of your search. Do you share the potential wealth or try to kick them out? On the other hand, maybe you know who this is, or maybe you're just glad to actually see another person for the first time in ages.
FOUR: GOOD MORGUE-NING You've just woken up in a morgue after dying in one unfortunate way or another. You have no idea where you are beyond that, but your tablet is insisting you can't stay here, so you should probably get out of here pretty quickly. Of course, bringing people back from the dead isn't a perfect science, so you're missing something important to you. Maybe you've lost your voice, maybe you can't remember where you're from, maybe you can't remember where you are right now. It looks like someone else is nearby, though. Maybe they can help you out?
[Having grown up in the mountains, Tifa had thought she was pretty used to dealing with the cold, but this...
She's already tried the basics: Kicking at doors, punching at windows, shouting for help. Of course, none of it has helped her much. It kept her warm for a while, though.
At least she's got the coat. Her fingers are numb, though, and she spends a precious moment fumbling with the tablet's keyboard before finally giving up and flicking on the video function.
She's trembling badly, and she takes a moment to try to keep her teeth from chattering before speaking. It doesn't quite work.]
H-hey.
[Generally, she'd introduce herself, but it's hard to remember pleasantries at a time like this.]
I'm not sure where I am. All the doors are locked, and...
[Tifa pauses, exhaling in frustration.]
Can anybody help a girl out?
3
[Tifa's first course of action is to get a fire started, because she's absolutely freezing. Next, she searches the rooms for everything useful she can find. She's ecstatic when she finds some canned food, but of course there's no can opener to be found. She's sitting at the table, contemplating the pros and cons of opening one with a knife, when the door opens.
She's up in an instant. It's possible, of course, that whoever's coming in just wants shelter like she does. But knowing this place, she can't exactly be lax.]
[That the figure walking in appears to be wearing a not unfamiliar black suit beneath the coat she's bundled up in might not do much to help Tifa feel like she can relax any time soon for the company that's found her. It's far from intentional, though; Cissnei doesn't know Tifa anything like well enough to appreciate that her presence might be a disruption.
No, all Cissnei sees is another young woman in a space that seems big enough for both of them, should Tifa allow it.]
Don't worry. I only came in here to get warm. And maybe see what's around here. I'll try not to get in your way.
[Tifa recognizes the suit immediately, or at least she thinks she does. Maybe it's desperation to find something familiar in all of this, but the girl definitely looks like a Turk. Maybe two years ago that would have been immediate reason to try to kick her out, but there's no Shinra here. And anyway, Rufus and Rude had saved her and Cloud and helped them in Edge, so she's been feeling quite a bit warmer towards the Turks than she'd ever thought she'd be.
So she shakes her head, putting her hands on her hips.]
Cissnei. Nice to meet a friendly face around here.
[They're in scarce supply, in the cold, barren landscape outside, and even for someone like Cissnei, who keeps to herself more often than not, the lack of other people around has been unsettling.
She has, after all, grown up in a city where such solitude is a rarity and while her work has entailed stretches of time in less populated areas, it's always been with knowing there's somewhere for her to go back to.
She doesn't have that luxury here. Which means having to make what connections she can, however she can.]
Looks like this is one of the better-kept places, at least.
[She nods. The name doesn't ring a bell, but that doesn't mean much. Of course, there are probably more important things than trying to figure where her new companion is from, but... Sue her, she's homesick.]
Where are you from, Cissnei?
[If she is a Turk, she's not one that Tifa has ever run into. But that doesn't mean much, either.]
[Even as the response falls easily enough from her lips, Cissnei can't help but find it a strange question to ask. It's enough that she forgets her other aims for the moment, concerned more now with seeing if she can place why she might be familiar.
Nothing's stirring. Maybe once or twice she's seen someone like her in passing but Cissnei sees a lot of people so that doesn't really tell her much.]
[More sorry than he can express. He didn't know this girl well - too new to Norfinbury for them to have talked much - but they'd established that she was probably from the same world as him. That makes the realization of her situation hit hard.
Swallowing, he sticks to text. So much easier to keep a level head this way.]
Do you know how to build a snow shelter? I can't guarantee it will work, but you should try.
[That's what she was afraid of, and having it confirmed is quite a blow. She still can't navigate the keyboard, so she keeps to video.]
No.
[She pauses to burrow down deeper into her coat, considering this idea. She doesn't have anything to dig with, really, but she can look. She's afraid of her fingers getting frostbite, so she's been alternating shoving her hands into the pockets of the coat. Digging a hole in the snow is going to be tough, though.]
[And that's another good thing about text. She can read it as fast or as slow as she needs, and there's no need to replay the message every time.]
You're by a building. That's good. You can use one of the walls as part of your shelter. Find the side that seems to be protected from the wind the most, then...
[Step by step, he guides her through the things he's learned from training and through experience. What he lacks in visual aids that he can't provide, he makes up for in thoroughness. Will it be enough?
[She reads it carefully, then reads it again. It feels like a lot, when she's shivering and so hungry, but it's far better than lying down in the snow and freezing to death.]
Thank you, Kunsel. I'll let you know how it goes.
[The next message comes a while later, and Tifa's smiling again. She points the camera towards her newly built den. It isn't the nicest shelter, but it'll do, and all that exercise warmed her up at least.]
[Kunsel's just as glad he's stuck with text so far. It would be impossible with video, and difficult with audio, to hide the dread he's feeling right now otherwise. No one's ever survived a night outside of a house in this place that he's ever heard about. The chances that someone inexperienced with snow shelters could build one sufficient...
But no. He's not going to steal that hope from her. From her or himself. Even the ghost of a chance is still enough not to give up just yet.]
That's great!
Now for the last step. This one's important, so make sure you read every word.
Please get inside.
[Just a little bit of humor that he doesn't entirely feel, but humor can be just as important as shelter for surviving in Snowhell.]
[ He'd been running like hell to find somewhere to stay that night. And there he'd been trying to stick with the group. Great job, Fair. Nice job getting separated! At least he finally tracks down a house and good thing he does because he can hear his tablet starting to blip and go off. It's only common practice that stops him from barging into the house with gusto.
No, knife in hand, he's cautiously opening the door instead, finding himself- hit with heat? What in-
'Hello?'
Zack freezes one moment. Then relaxes the next when the familiarity of the voice hits him and he raises his chin in acknowledgement as he lowers the knife. Already, he's moving inside. He knows too well now how easy it is to get locked out there... and the dire consequences that come of it... Still, despite his heaving breath, he tries to find his voice. Tries to keep it easygoing. ] Hey, Tif. It's just me.
[The tension drains from her, and she smiles at him as she leans against the table. If she has to be trapped in a cabin the whole night with someone, it might as well be a friend.
He's panting, though, and she's not sure if he was just trying to find a place to stay before everything locks up, or if he'd been running from something.
She tucks her hair behind her ear, her head tilting slightly.]
Ye-Yeah. Yeah, I'm good. [ Even as he says that, he's still catching breath. He's also pretty sure he already heard the click of the lock setting in place only seconds after he closed the door behind him. Close... Way too close. But he'd made it... Momentarily, he finally pushes off from where he'd been previously hunched over with his hand on his knees.
No, instead, he's got his back against the door, hand carding through his hair; he closes his eyes, trying to dial down the adrenaline. Then cracks an eye open again soon after to study her before his attention lands on the can sitting on the table. ] You need some help with that? [ He knows how much of a pain they are to deal with... Just... give him another moment. ]
[He'd made it just in time. Tifa hadn't realized how late it was already. She takes a few steps forward as he tries to catch his breath, then shakes her head at his question.]
Maybe you should sit down first.
[They're stuck there the whole night, after all, so it's not like there's any rush. She shoots him a smile.]
At least we found somewhere nice to stay.
[The lack of mold is a definite plus. And a working fireplace with wood!]
Heh... Yeah. [ He nods at the fireplace in emphasis. ] Makes you feel like you're in a five star inn. [ There's a hint of a cheeky smile as he finally pushed off the door. Seriously, Tif. He's alright. Just winded.
And as if to further make that point, he's already beelining for the cans while waving her off. ] But seriously, I got this! [ He shucks off his pack on the chair she offered before looking around for... Oh! Taking that can, he'll be crossing over to kneel by the fireplace... and start scraping the top of the can against the stone roughly. Never mind the sudden annoying noise. ]
[She was freezing her butt off and needed inside a house hours ago. Sure, it wasn't a heated house, but it was certainly better inside than out there. Back pack was dropped off next to the door as she moved her legs and shook off snow.
That's when she heard a hello?]
Hello! You're in luck for the great ninja Yuffie has arrived to help you! [Not for free, but she'll mention that detail later.
Wait... the voice caught up to her as being familiar.] Whoa! Tifa?
[She can't help but stare, at first, when Yuffie enters the cabin. Is this real? It has to be real, right? She's been moving around enough. Nothing else seems odd. Her heart leaps as she accepts it.]
Yuffie!
[Tifa crosses the space between them in two quick strides and hugs the younger girl tightly. This place is depressing, to say the least, but now Tifa is grinning as she steps back. Yuffie looks fine, but a bit of that motherly instinct is kicking in anyway, and Tifa looks her over.]
[Zack. Zack. It had a familiar ring to it, but it could also be a common name. She won't worry about it for now. Tifa knowing them is good enough for her.]
Are they in the house? [She stood on her tip-toes to look around her friend.] You're the first I've seen. Vincent wouldn't show himself even if he was here. [He's just mean like that.]
[Enoch is quick to ease concerns. So far, everyone has been very cooperative with one another, much to the bewilderment of some, but an instinctive defensiveness isn't out of place in conditions like this. He raises his hands from under his cloak so Tifa can see he's unarmed - the only thing he's holding in them at the moment is his tablet. (in contrast to his tall, bulky form, it has a pink heart-patterned cover. The joys of scavenging everything you have...)]
I saw smoke coming from this house, so I knew there was a fire...do you mind sharing it?
[It doesn't hurt to be cautious, of course, but he's being very forthcoming, and everything is about to lock up soon. Besides, she can take care of herself. None of them are going to do very well if they can't give each other the benefit of the doubt, after all.]
I don't mind.
[Her eyes catch on tablet's childish cover, and she smiles.]
[He follows her gaze to his tablet and smiles a bit sheepishly in return. None of it strikes him as childish (the cultural markers that say so have no meaning to him), but it's amusing to just about everyone else, he's noticed. That smile relaxes into something warmer as she allows him to stay.]
Likewise; I'm Enoch. Thank you for your generosity, Tifa.
[It may not be her house, exactly, but she was here before he was and had started the fire. As far as he is concerned, at the moment, she counts as the hostess here, with all the respect that requires. And normally this would be a passive sort of respect, accepting graciously all she would provide, but nobody is a provider here.
So, instead, he focuses on helping her with what tasks he can. Namely, that can that he's sure she would have opened now if she could. Unfortunately, his view of canned food is coming from the wrong direction.]
Does that can not come with a tab to open it with?
[He's so polite, too! All in all, she's guessing there are far worse people to be locked in with for a night. His question makes her shake her head, and she puts her hands on her hips.]
No, and I haven't found a can opener, either.
[Tifa is starting to realize how many survival skills she doesn't have. Living in the slums had made her resourceful, but there's a huge difference between Midgar and an abandoned town.]
