economics
my time and effort are finite resources
my ability to care drops exponentially for each additional friend added to my facebook page
which ultimate leads to not caring about any of them
and that's a pretty crap friend, right?
the rational human being invests all of its resources in one friendship
it ends, you can move on to the next one
you don't have to waste time trying to worry about people you're only tangentially interested in and share one hobby or workspace with
