Network Prompts
ONE: LIKE A MOTH TO A FLAME Something about the light of the tablet just seems so alluring. You feel compelled to it, checking the network every free moment, and getting agitated when you can't; you need to talk to people, you need to talk to them now, and hopefully they'll actually respond. Maybe others are having similar attachment problems...
Only one way to find out.
TWO: CAN WE GET ANOTHER LIFELINE OR TWO? So that's it. You're stuck. Maybe there's some kind of a coded message you simply can't decipher. Maybe it's as simple as something's blocking your way and you've got a few tools scattered around, but you can't figure out how to use them to solve whatever puzzle is keeping you from progressing. Or maybe it's something else entirely. Either way, you have no idea how to get around it.
Luckily for you, there's a whole network full of helpful - or maybe unhelpful - souls. Perhaps it's time to ask for some assistance? Someone else is bound to have some kind of insight.
Action Prompts
THREE: SWING BATTER BATTER SWING BATTER BATTER SWING The toy store is nice and cozy, even though sometimes it feels like the dolls are watching you. So you've stayed here for just a little too long, and you're starting to notice... things. But that's just your imagination, right? They can't actually be watching you. They can't actually be moving, either. That door opening? Those footsteps? Maybe they're just a figment of your imagination.
...or maybe they're not. Maybe you should take a baseball bat to whoever that is and find out.
FOUR: A FATAL FUGUE Sunset is fast approaching. You can see some buildings up ahead - if you hurry, you'll make it indoors just in time. But wait! Do you hear someone calling for help and feel compelled to investigate? Do you feel a debilitating headache coming on? Or do you suddenly get a really, really bad feeling about actually walking through those doors?
If you don't snap out of it, it could be deadly. Luckily, there's someone already in that house that might be able to drag you to safety, with or without your approval.
[By the time they make it inside, his whole being is so preoccupied with how much nicer it is to be inside where it's...not warm, but at least not freezing. He's rubbing feeling back into his face when she addresses him, and he looks back at her with startled concern.]
Of course. Anything!
[Letting all his packs fall to the floor, he sits down at her side.]
[She tries not to let the apology in her tone drown out her actual request - it never felt quite right to make Quark focus his attention on her like this.]
When the doors unlock, would you mind if we go, um... look for whoever it was?
I promise it won't take very long.
[All she needs to see is whether a body was left behind or not. Corpsehunting might not be the sort of task Quark should accompany her on, but he was always so insistent to stay by her side in this place - in the absence of Tenmyouji, perhaps a familiar face was the next best option. She didn't mind. It only made some decisions that much more complicated.]
Oh, the administrator... yes, we could try that. I hope it wouldn't be too much of a bother for her.
[Not that she hardly approved of the way someone watched over and let people die of the elements when they could all easily find shelter first. But in a way, it was not too unlike the Doctor's project. A necessary evil.
It bothered her then, and it bothers her now, even if the twisted logic makes structural sense in her mind.]
Still, I think I'd like to see it for myself, when we have the chance. It... well, um, "better" isn't the word I'd want to use, but... I guess it would make me feel "better", than if we just had to read a list of names.
[Quark nods. He understands, he does. He doesn't know how likely they are to find anyone even if someone really was out there...as far as he knows, whenever anybody dies, the administrator has her spider minions move them to a morgue almost immediately. But he's never actually seen it for himself, so he's not sure. Either way, as long as it makes her feel better, that's what matters the most.]
That makes sense.
[He pulls his tablet out of his bag and onto his lap, staring at the screen with a dull sort of expression, but doesn't actually interact with it. His mind is elsewhere. It's a long moment before he says anything.]
I've only seen one person die so far. There wasn't any body leftover to look for after.
[That's an alarming surprise. She's aware that people return from the dead by now, but not of the intricacies of it. One could strike decomposition off the list, as well as a corpse being devoured - well, unless something out there really liked to drag absolutely everything away for a fest, including bones. But to have no remains at all?]
Maybe someone took it? Perhaps they wanted to bury it somewhere else.
[Quark shakes his head as he remembers it. All the sand pouring out of the thing's mouth, it's huge mouth. The way it picked up his friend without a trace of hesitation.]
A monster ate them, so...
[So, what? Why is he talking about this? He's not...he's not sure. When was the last time he talked about it, or tried to talk about it, or told anyone that he was anything other than okay about what he saw or how it happened. A pained look crosses his small face, and he bows his head even lower against his chest. Luna doesn't deserve him to be so sad. She's too nice to have to be bothered with it. His voice is small as he shakes his head again.]
Nevermind. It's a really different situation, I guess.
[WELL, NEVERMIND ABOUT TAKING THAT OPTION OUT OF THE LIST
She's obviously alarmed, her expression going pale with wide eyes as she stares at Quark, waiting for him to continue. When he refuses, making himself small and shying away, something inside her shoots pangs of guilt, madly trying to reroute her priorities here.
Quark had seen something horrible, and yet he felt he had to hide it or not talk about it? What kind of place was this, that he had no one to talk to?
She's quick to move herself closer, her voice gentle.]
I'm so sorry, Quark. You really had to watch something like that?
Y-Yeah. It happened to another kid my age. We were traveling together.
[And they pushed Quark out of the way, jumping in front of the monster to save him when he was falling behind. The same feelings of terror and helplessness start to creep up in his stomach--so when Luna moves closer to him, he does the only thing that's natural for a frightened child to do: he takes his hat off and leans into her, curling his arms around her middle. He's so small against her side.]
I'm sorry, Miss Luna. Sometimes...sometimes I just feel so sad.
[She starts a bit as he grasps onto her. It's... nostalgic, in a sad way. The last minutes she remembers from home, falling apart in Sigma's arms...
It's that feeling she tries to mimic, but in reverse - letting her arms wrap gently around Quark, stroking his hair with one hand and keeping her voice soft. This... is how Sigma had to have felt when she did this to him, right?
It's so strange. It still feels so nice, but in a different way. Protective, maybe, or comforting. It was hard to tell.]
Quark...
I... I think it's okay to be sad. Everything about this place... it's so hard to find happiness here. It's hard to be alone and afraid here, or to... watch someone die. It must hurt. But keeping all that sadness inside you... that just means it hurts you more all on your own, doesn't it?
[She keeps up the stroking against his hair, following a gentle rhythm against the curls.]
[Quark listens in respectful silence as Luna comforts him. And...and it is comforting. Not that nobody else has been able to comfort him when he's felt this way, but there's something notably different about being comforted by Luna--by someone from home. Or, if not home, then a place as close to home as he's probably ever going to have again.]
I guess so.
[Agreeing this, he takes a deep breath. He tries not to think about how much she probably deserves better than to be stuck here with him. He tries not to think about how everyone's always worried about him and it makes him feel like such a burden and maybe it would just be better for everybody if he disappeared. Luna doesn't seem to mind having him around. That's important, right? She wouldn't lie to him. She wouldn't lie to anybody, because she's that nice.
He wouldn't let Dio betray her in the AB Game. He wouldn't have let anybody, no matter how big or scary they might've been.]
Thanks. You're the nicest person ever. I feel less sad just not being alone...so I'm glad you're here with me now, even if that's selfish.
[She giggles softly at the compliment, ruffling his hair a little under her fingers.]
I don't think it's selfish at all... well, not in the bad way, anyway. Being lonely is really hard. I don't think I could be here for long all by myself without feeling lost. So... I'm glad you're here with me, too.

[Quark hardly hesitates. His expression is serious, though after a moment he does try and give her an encouraging smile.]
We could try contacting the admin, too! Maybe she can tell us if anyone was stuck outside before lockdown tonight.
[He frowns, thinking.]
And...I think an obituary might go up tomorrow morning. If anyone didn't make it, their name would be on there.
guhbuhbluh i lost my internet connection as i was posting this. shakes fist at the universe
