TEST DRIVE MEME

If you'd like to apply to Snowblind and would like to test the waters first or get a sample set up for your application, this meme is for you! We've even provided some prompts for you to use if you want (but feel free to make up your own). Here's how it works.
✭ Reply to this entry with a character you're considering apping into the game. You can include the name of your character and the fandom in your subject line.
✭ Comment around to others on the meme, whether you're in the game already or not.
✭ Now you have a sample ready for your application!
✭ So go reserve and apply when reservations and applications are open.
✭ Seriously, do it.

Network Prompts
ONE: WAKEY WAKEY
You're drawn out of your slumber when your tablet emits an earsplitting SCREECH. No amount of shaking it or hitting it will get it to shut up for five whole minutes, but at the very end it cuts itself off what sounds like a piercing scream. Well, that was weird. Maybe you should check in on the network - someone might have an idea of what that was. Or maybe they'll be just as lost as you are. At least you can all be confused together...

TWO: DON'T LET THE BEDBUGS BITE...
It's past curfew, and you've been locked in for the night. But for some reason, you just can't manage to get to sleep. Nightmares giving you grief? General insomnia problems? Well, at least you've got the network to keep you company. Maybe you can get someone to tell you a bedtime story.

Action Prompts
THREE: INCONVENIENCE STORE
Congratulations, you've managed to stumble upon the Mallard River Market! But you're not alone. Among the shelves of junk food (just as well-stocked as you would expect from any normal store) you'll find one - or more! - other people there with you. Here's hoping you're not both after the same box of Frosted Toaster Pastries, because things could get ugly fast. Don't linger too long, either; at 7PM, you'll be compelled to leave whether you want to or not and will only have about an hour to find somewhere to take shelter...

FOUR: RUN RUN RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN
It's late. It's cold. There's a bunch of snow around you and you can sort of make out vague shapes in the distance that might be buildings, but in these conditions it's hard to tell. Regardless of what they are, though, you're going to want to hustle - if it hits 8PM and you're still outside, you're not going to make it through the night. Perhaps that person up ahead can help you? Or - if you're already safe and sound - maybe you should head outside to get that poor soul struggling outside in to shelter before they freeze. Good luck!

[ She glances over her shoulder at the shelves of junk food. ]

Heavy in preservatives, better than nothing, but lacking in nutritional content.

[ He hadn't... said anything but now she's giving him a different look. Like maybe he actually needs the benefit of her experience. ]

And the supply is very finite. Restraint is very warranted.

[ Her experience certainly can't hurt, loathe as he is to admit it. Helpful advice breaks his active hostility, anyway. He glances back at the food supply, considering, and thinks about how empty his bag is. ]

It's nothing like you'd see back home. Even out in the Etheruim.

[ He had begun to think the bizarre future/past people could live on this stuff, but apparently that's wrong. Another thing he files under 'good to know.' ]

[ Hmm. That sounds interesting... And her scientific curiosity was really the one thing she has always lived by. It makes her manner rather more pleasant. She idly picks loose a cigarette, and even holds one out to him. ]

And what is 'back home' like?

[ Unfortunately she cares more about the fact-finding of the question than about him personally, but uh. Well. That's Marie. ]

[ The question throws Jim. Home is... normal, compared to all this strangeness. He doesn't even know where to begin. He takes the cigarette, just to give himself time to think about it, and rolls it between his fingers. His mother would kill him, he thinks, as he considers it. ]

They took me off a ship, but home's Montressor. We were waiting to dock at the spaceport there, but I guess we never made it, because I woke up here.

[ His mother's probably still waiting for him at the 'port. She's going to kill him and Doppler, cigarette or no cigarette, if he ever makes it back. ]

[ She frowns, finding the name familiar for some reason but unable to place it. She lets it go with a quick shake of her head. She lights her cigarette with some relief, her shoulders sagging. ]

Interstellar travel, very interesting. How far do your ships go, do they travel faster than light?

[ Considering she is the inventor of FTL in her own universe, she is keenly interested to know this kind of thing. ]
rattlingthestars: (Into the light)

Disney skimped on the technobabble sigh

[personal profile] rattlingthestars 2015-07-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ He hesitates, but then holds the cigarette out for a light. He'll try anything once. ]

Crossed half the galaxy in a couple months on the Legacy.

[ He hasn't even considered that other people might not have that capability yet, so it's casual. ]
prosopopoeia: ([worry] Tales of deceit)

I feel your pain.

[personal profile] prosopopoeia 2015-07-02 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ One benefit of being in a frozen waste, nobody cares if you're old enough or allowed to smoke. Marie holds out the lighter, staring off idly at nothing for a moment. It had taken her ship five months to reach Tau Ceti V, 12 light years... Already she's wondering what she could have done to improve the speed of the Von Braun... but she doesn't get very far. The ship is gone. If the soldier was clever he blew it up when he had the chance. ]

Very good. [ She decides after a moment, praising it all as if he had something to do with it. ] Humanity needs good ships for expansion...

rattlingthestars: (Into the light)

[personal profile] rattlingthestars 2015-07-02 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Expand?

[ Jim sounds incredibly skeptical. As far as he knows, humans are everywhere, and have been for a couple hundred years. Maybe she meant outside the galaxy? ]

[ He fiddles with the lighter until he figures out how to get it to spark, and then stares at the fire instead of doing anything with the lighter. It's the first thing of its kind that he's seen here, but eventually it kicks in that he probably shouldn't waste the lighter fluid. ]

[ Her eyes flicker up, a vaguely wounded expression that she tries to tamp down. In a way she comprehends that if the interstellar ships were such a nonchalant topic to him that humanity must have long since expanded... She also comprehends she's not entirely sure she wants to be the one to give the sordid history of Earth. ]

All species begin on a singular homeworld. They will overcrowd it, if they do not find a means for space travel.

[ The most impersonal explanation she can muster. It had been her life's work, to make that possible for humanity. And it had been sorely abused for the glory of a greedy corporation. For all she knew, the threat that had taken it over has long since gone on to wipe out the rest of mankind.

Not knowing is... painful. ]

rattlingthestars: (Yikes)

[personal profile] rattlingthestars 2015-07-02 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
[ He's too absorbed in fiddling with the cigarette to see her reaction. He has the vaguest memories of following his father when he snuck out the back of the inn to smoke, mostly the smell and the face his mother made when she caught it on his clothes. Her words make him look up, though. ]

Wh - you can't get off-planet? You're still on Earth?
prosopopoeia: ([worry] Tales of deceit)

[personal profile] prosopopoeia 2015-07-02 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ Her brows pinch. She had really, emphatically, been trying not to have this conversation. ]

The majority of us. After an unfortunate incident on a space station, all progress to expand was halted.

[ Over-reactive neo-luddites had taken the reigns away from the corporations, putting them all into an intellectually fascist state. It had put Marie in an unfortunate situation when it had come to move from theoretical to practical. ]
rattlingthestars: (Yikes)

[personal profile] rattlingthestars 2015-07-02 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
[ Oh. Oops. Jim realizes he's set off a nerve and is at a complete loss as to what to do about it. A world bound to a single planet - not unlike where they were now - is unimaginable. He'd barely left his sleepy corner of Montressor before the voyage to find Flint's trove, but the possibility was always there for him in the most frustrating moments of claustrophobia. ]

They gave up? Just like that?

[personal profile] prosopopoeia 2015-07-02 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Christ above. Marie inhales on the cigarette deeply, looking away. Her voice is utterly bitter as she replies, ]

I was born after the 'incident'. I failed to be indoctrinated in the fear. I am the inventor of faster than light travel. I intended to help humanity, but my goals were perverted by others. The test ship is no more.
rattlingthestars: (???)

[personal profile] rattlingthestars 2015-07-04 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Are you going to rebuild it?

[ A shiver passes through him, as if to remind him where they are. ]

- If we ever get out of this place.

[ She hesitates. It's not like her to hesitate, but the question strikes her in a strange and painful way.

It was her life's work. It could either save humanity from smothering itself to death on a polluted planet, or it... could be used to kill them all outright, make them slaves to a mad machine.

The dice will always be thrown, Captain, no matter what the stakes. She had said that once, on Earth's surface smoking a cigarette over grey waters as Captain Diego had conveyed to her that he thought the situation was a dangerous one. ]

Yes.

[ Already she was Cassandra. Why not be Sisyphus as well? ]
