okay so what if Spirit in Snowhell. Imagine it.

Turning the screw apparently does something to his brain, and it seems to do a lot to help him focus. He winds up using it more and more as canon goes on, since it apparently works less and less as his madness intensifies. He's not doing it in Snowblind, since it's too cold and he's dealing with fairly severe migraines/external frostbite damage.

His soul has probably always been strong, since apparently that and his soul perception were why Death picked him as a student. It's gotten stronger over time, but he's always been terrifyingly powerful.

Did his soul perception and general abilities ever get him into trouble as a kid? I'M ASSUMING YES but if yet, what's the worst thing (generally speaking, not from his own perspective) that he did before Death found him?

YES. His soul perception made him incredibly creepy in general, in addition to the general creepiness that came from being a kid with no morals, a dissection obsession, and limited emotional capacity. Highly related to that, as a child his family wanted to make his life easier, wanted to help him fit in, wanted to do everything they could to gently steer him towards a path that didn't involve hurting people. But he was the kind of kid who stole and killed and dissected farm animals, and the tipping point was probably the first time his parents caugh him cutting himself open. But even before that they probably never left him alone with his siblings, because they knew if he had the opportunity he probably would have gone after them as well.
