1. Post with your character.
2. When people tag you, respond with emotionally compromising essays about what their character means to yours! Or doesn't.
3. Cry a lot.

I've mentioned it in narrative a few times but Tifa reminds him of a weird mix of Hadrian and Gwen. And it's not necessarily because she has the same traits (though she does, she's got Gwen's no-nonsense bit and Hadrian's sense of justice) but more because... well, she's stubbornly trying to be his friend. Like, you've got a good sense of how most people at home respond to Royce cause you've read a bit of the books, so he's understandably super confused about why Tifa wants anything to do with him. He kind of likes it? Like - he's annoyed because he doesn't want to get attached or care, but it's really kind of nice to have someone be interested in his well being.
He's already adopted the mindset of 'mine' (versus 'disposable') with Tifa too, though he hasn't fully realized it. He's still in the denial stage, and he's iffy sometimes because she knows far more about him than he's really comfortable with, but... given some time, Tifa's going to end up the one person he quietly does whatever he can to protect. Including fucking other people over for her.
Plus, Royce judges all women by The Gwen Standard, so girls that are closer to being like her win more points in his book.

So here's the thing - Alfie is Complicated, to Royce. Royce doesn't make friends easily and he doesn't particularly like to, or... know how. Like his friends in canon are his friends because they won't leave him alone, he has no idea how to form relationships. The last person he ever intentionally made friends with was Merrick, and their relationship ended because Merrick got him arrested and sent to a salt mine prison that people never return from. So like. Royce has trust issues. OBVIOUSLY. And so he especially can't trust someone like Alfie, who is experienced in being a criminal.
But Alfie is smart, and he has a way of talking his way through and around things that Royce finds really fun. It's like playing verbal chess, with both of them amicably trying to put each other in check. There's not a lot of malice there, Alfie isn't looking to actively screw him over or be super nice to him for no reason and because Royce has a Lifetime Bundle Supply of Issues™ that makes Royce like Alfie more. I think it's because he knows what to expect, knows what he's getting into. Royce likes honesty - in the way that he likes it when people are honest about who they are and what they aim to accomplish. The friendlier a person is the less likely Royce is to trust them because he always assumes they have ulterior motives for being that way, and obviously Alfie's pretty aloof, so.
And now Alfie knows about Royce being mir, too - which is a Big Deal for Royce. So now Royce is in this position of one, Alfie knows something really important about him and being cautious about it and two, kind of wanting to be friends and not even knowing how to begin to approach that.
laughs because i actually gave you tl;dr oops my bad

I'd love to get them to the point where Alfie can open up a little more about his side of their mutual "hated persecuted minority" thing. That might even things up a bit on that front!

I think it's also absolutely possible for them to get to a point where they're looking out for each other, even if it's just like "yo alfie someone is heading your way and they've got weapons, watch your back" type looking out.

I was just thinking earlier that right now, he would totally screw Royce over if it benefited him, but he'd probably also screw the other person over by immediately warning Royce about what was coming so that he'd have a chance to turn the tables back in his favor. WHICH SOUNDS REALLY CONVOLUTED but it's how he rolls
also never screwing him over with regards to the elf thing; that secret really is safe 8]

I say as if Royce isn't also a brat but I digress. Zach is the first person met face to face in snowhell and therefore, Zach got Royce at the height of his paranoia. He was still settling in and trying to figure out what the hell was going on, and so that means he was Extra Rude to Zach.
ON THE ONE HAND, Royce thinks Zach can probably handle himself well enough in any sort of situation, BUT on the other hand, Royce also sees the guy as an over-compensating loudmouth. Royce has super high self-confidence when it comes to his abilities and skills but he doesn't think it makes him superior, it just puts him on even ground with the rest of society. He has skills he can use to protect himself from a world that, in his experience, is always out to hurt him in the worst way it knows how.
So Zach insisting that nobody is out to get Royce and making a bunch of assumptions about how Royce feels in general just makes Royce roll his eyes. And Royce's not even decent enough to bother to explain himself, either! Not worth his time - he'd rather just let Zach think he's a dick. Everybody else usually does.

Zach is very mature and confident what is your issue

Cloud is another one of those people that just KEEP TRYING TO BE HIS FRIEND and Royce has no idea why. Similar to Tifa, Royce is just ??? at him, but - Cloud is a little easier for Royce to admit he respects. Cloud doesn't seem to be an idiot when it comes to reality/realistic situations and plus, Cloud has a sense of humor that Royce can appreciate. I think Cloud has the potential to be someone really relaxing for Royce to be around, once Royce gets over his initial EVERYBODY IS LOOKING TO KILL ME/DO ME HARM thing.
... Which might take a while, but Cloud hasn't given up yet, so.
ALSO LET ME GIVE YOU A SILLY LITTLE HEADCANON THING: I headcanon that Royce tends to react better to people with calm, sort of monotone voices, and boy does Cloud fit that. It's super silly but the fact that Cloud doesn't raise his voice and hasn't snapped at Royce puts Royce at ease, in a weird way. It's kind of like approaching a wounded dog backed into a corner.

NO BUT REALLY, Royce doesn't have strong feelings about Rhys, he kind of just thinks he's a wet noodle of a human being. Royce actually sort of feels vaguely bad for him in a 'you're... pathetic' sort of way. He'd also have no qualms about letting monsters eat him. This may be subject to change once Rhys gets better because based on what I've seen of Tales, Royce might really enjoy trading sass.
Poor guy, he doesn't deserve Royce's disdain tbh
