Joker. So, Joker. I headcanon that John read comics growing up, and while he was more into Marvel than DC, it's kind of impossible to not know who the Joker is. Add to that television shows and movies and... yeah. So, Joker puts him on edge for so very many reasons, not the least of which is that he's a bloody fictional character. Joker, Steph, Steve, and Peggy share the collective honor of fucking with John's sense of reality in Snowhell. Because while he could maybe believe this place is real if they weren't here, with them here, it's like... is this all an act? A dream? He doesn't know. It unsettles him on a base level, especially when he's had issues with being experimented on before. /coughthankssherlockcough

While he's unsettled, he's not exactly afraid of Joker. Knowledge is power or something like that. John leans lawful to neutral on the law-to-chaos scale, so mostly, he just despises the man and his casual violence and threats. His demeanor also reminds John strongly of Moriarty, the man John blames for Sherlock's death. So there's some projection going on with exacting revenge for Sherlock on someone else. Someone else who very much deserves it, as far as John is concerned. The Joker is not a very nice man. John shoots those kinds of people and feels no remorse about it.
