Network Prompts
ONE: YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED When you wake up, you find that a new application has been downloaded to your tablet. It's titled "SURVEY" and is exactly what it claims to be--although there's no explanation to why it's appeared or what it is for other than the note that claims the survey is not opt-out and that your cooperation is appreciated. And more troubling, the questions become more sinister the farther in you answer. Such questions as, "on a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your stay?" and "have your needs been met in a timely manner?" become more akin to, "if you had to chose between the two, would you eat your hands or your feet to stave off the hunger?" and "are you sure you are not the last one still alive?"
Perhaps someone on the Network would like to discuss what this could mean--and if there are any consequences behind finishing or refusing to take the survey.
TWO: NOT SO HELPFUL AVATARS Every tablet has the option for a customizable avatar that will talk to you and keep your tablet in order. Maybe you set it up, maybe you never checked it. Either way, it keeps popping up unrequested and being sort of... Odd. Flickering, talking in strange, mechanical voices, offering advice that's unhelpful at best and actively harmful at worst... Maybe it's even telling the entire network some things you've been doing you'd rather everyone didn't know.
Time to call tech support. Unfortunately, the best option is other people on the network. Good luck.
Action Prompts
THREE: SPIDERS IN THE WALLS Somehow you or your travel companion injured themselves. A quick call to the admin fixed this, but now you can't help but be gripped with the burning curiosity of where the helpful spiders she deployed have gone. You saw them scramble toward the vents, but by the time paralysis wore off they'd completely disappeared. Only now you can't stop thinking about them. Where do they go to? How can they be trapped or followed? You swear you hear little mechanical pattering inside the walls. Maybe you can find some sort of tool to help you break into a vent around the house. Or maybe your companion can convince you to rest before you hurt yourself.
FOUR: SCHOOL DAYS You've ended up in the elementary school. Maybe you're grabbing more food, maybe you're exploring. Either way, this place is creepy; the atmosphere is the sort that gets the hair on the back of your neck rising (potentially metaphorically, if you don't have hair or a neck). It's not long before strange things start happening. The sound of running and screaming children, doors slamming in far off or nearby hallways, pianos playing... What's going on? It's hard to tell what's really happening from what isn't happening. Maybe someone who's also exploring has some idea.
So can she.] Okay. [The door doesn't bother her (not yet), but only because it doesn't cross her mind that unsightly things could try to bust through it on a whim.
She'll gladly go with Alfie, however, since she enjoys the company, chips and apple in tow.] If we find Corvo, he could help us escape.
[It's not a large house, but Alfie is pretty tired; he decides to do a quick look-through tonight to make sure there aren't any nasty surprises waiting for them, and save the actual supply search for the morning.
In every new room they enter, he takes point, making sure the kid is at least partially behind him.]
The man sounds like he's got some skills. If he shows up here, you'll let us know, yeah?
[Of course, Emily is less concerned about looking when Alfie is doing it and more concerned about trying to eat what she had been given. When Alfie looks back, she'll be there, paying most attention to the chips or apple, though occasionally, she'll be peeping around into the rooms they visit.] Yes.
He is very strong. [She glances at Alfie, then away.] The Outsider said he gave Corvo a gift, too, but he won't tell me what kind of gift it was.
So I guess Corvo is strong and has a special gift.
[For a moment, Emily thinks about it.] I don't know. I never asked him. He looks like us except he has black eyes and sometimes has strange shadows around him.
But he can vanish and appear, and he lives in the Void with the floating whales and the floating islands.
He says he's really, really old. Older than Dunwall.
[This has Emily thinking about it critically while eating the last bit of potato chips. She has a good enough imagination to be able to believe the Outsider isn't human. In fact, she had her suspicions. The Void. His eyes. His appearing.
Him being old.] I don't know. I've never seen him do anything. He just comes when I go to sleep.
We did have a picnic once. I think the Void is a nice place. It's quiet, and nothing bad happens, and you can hear the whales sing. It's not cold or hot.
Oh! You mean Corvo. [The Outsider gives her a bit of the creeps despite, so talking about Corvo makes her visibly brighten. Love Corvo. Kiss his face.] Yes, Corvo is strong. He can lift me up over his head. And he can run really fast.
I watched him in the Hound Pits. He moves so fast sometimes you can't see him. He will be on a walk-way, then he will be down the walk-way a second later. He knows how to use a sword and a gun, and he knows how to sail because he would go on trips for Mother. He said he was going to show me a Tyvian choke-hold, but he hasn't yet. [Sorry, Alfie. Even chips can't keep Emily from chattering.]
He also saved me from the Golden Cat, too. And then he saved me at Kingsparrow when the Loyalists turned against us.
[At first, Emily doesn't answer. She folds the chip bag neatly, then climbs up onto the couch to sit down from Alfie. Her legs hang over the edge and don't come anywhere near reaching the floor.
It's just as cold as she expected, though it's nice to be able to sit for once. Her legs ache, she can now tell.] Yes.
[She's relieved to know Alfie has some loved ones. Usually she has enough intuition to tell when someone is truly crooked, so though Alfie may do some illegal things, though Alfie may have a few flaws, she can tell Alfie means well.
He isn't like the Pendletons, Havelock, the High Overseer, the rest. She's sad to know left behind is what Corvo may be, but if he's safe, that's okay.] Okay. [The unfinished apple is put on Alfie's closest thigh.] You can eat this if you want, or you can keep it.
[He fishes a sandwich bag out of his backpack, wrapping the apple. He's still a little hungry, but not enough that he wouldn't rather save for tomorrow - every little bit counts in Norfinbury.]
Yeah. You will.
It'll be here, though - not at home. This isn't a dream.
Satisfied, she settles back into the couch and slumps.] Mister Alfie, do you know any stories? [Look, she's going to ask fOR A STORY, GIVE HER THIS ONE THING, AL.]
no subject
Um, Mister Alfie--
no subject
[He stops, turning around fully to face her.]
Yeah.
no subject
You're a nice man even if you do some things that aren't legal.
no subject
Thank you, Emily.
Come in the other room while I search, yeah?
[Away from the front door; away from where anomalies try to break in.]
no subject

He got out of prison.

[How does he put this at last semi-delicately.]
We've got human and non-human people here, yeah? Which one is he?

[And separating kids from their guardians - and this Corvo definitely sounds like a guardian - is particularly cruel.]
But they are safe, so don't you worry too much about him, eh?
