Network Prompts
ONE: YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED When you wake up, you find that a new application has been downloaded to your tablet. It's titled "SURVEY" and is exactly what it claims to be--although there's no explanation to why it's appeared or what it is for other than the note that claims the survey is not opt-out and that your cooperation is appreciated. And more troubling, the questions become more sinister the farther in you answer. Such questions as, "on a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your stay?" and "have your needs been met in a timely manner?" become more akin to, "if you had to chose between the two, would you eat your hands or your feet to stave off the hunger?" and "are you sure you are not the last one still alive?"
Perhaps someone on the Network would like to discuss what this could mean--and if there are any consequences behind finishing or refusing to take the survey.
TWO: NOT SO HELPFUL AVATARS Every tablet has the option for a customizable avatar that will talk to you and keep your tablet in order. Maybe you set it up, maybe you never checked it. Either way, it keeps popping up unrequested and being sort of... Odd. Flickering, talking in strange, mechanical voices, offering advice that's unhelpful at best and actively harmful at worst... Maybe it's even telling the entire network some things you've been doing you'd rather everyone didn't know.
Time to call tech support. Unfortunately, the best option is other people on the network. Good luck.

THREE: SPIDERS IN THE WALLS Somehow you or your travel companion injured themselves. A quick call to the admin fixed this, but now you can't help but be gripped with the burning curiosity of where the helpful spiders she deployed have gone. You saw them scramble toward the vents, but by the time paralysis wore off they'd completely disappeared. Only now you can't stop thinking about them. Where do they go to? How can they be trapped or followed? You swear you hear little mechanical pattering inside the walls. Maybe you can find some sort of tool to help you break into a vent around the house. Or maybe your companion can convince you to rest before you hurt yourself.
FOUR: SCHOOL DAYS You've ended up in the elementary school. Maybe you're grabbing more food, maybe you're exploring. Either way, this place is creepy; the atmosphere is the sort that gets the hair on the back of your neck rising (potentially metaphorically, if you don't have hair or a neck). It's not long before strange things start happening. The sound of running and screaming children, doors slamming in far off or nearby hallways, pianos playing... What's going on? It's hard to tell what's really happening from what isn't happening. Maybe someone who's also exploring has some idea.
[He grins appreciatively, but doesn't press for more information. He's pretty sure Bucky will start regretting helping Tony out if he starts pushing him right into things. Most people do.]
I'm freezing, that's why I asked. If I feel like Hell and you're the one hunkered down, then you must be pretty cold. Should I be worried?
[Well, that's an answer. Tony looks genuinely surprised, because, well, he is cold, but he hadn't meant that as a complaint. He was complaining, when he really thinks about it, but usually he can complain about little things like that for hours and nobody says anything. He'd brought it up more as a conversation starter.]
Uh, okay. Don't you need it?
[He hesitates, then decides to approach Bucky, temporarily abandoning his spider-bot hunt.]
[He looks more than a little uncomfortable. Why is he trapped in a house with Tony Stark, of all people? Any Avenger is one he wants to be nowhere near. He shrugs as if to dispel any more thanks and tugs the hoodie over his head.
This does reveal his metal arm, red Soviet star painted on one shoulder, but he hopes Tony is smart enough not to mention it. The hoodie, faded blue and more than a bit smelly since laundry isn't really a thing in Norfinbury, gets thrust at him.]
I think that's typically how it goes. Save someone's life and they thank you. Usually I'm-
[He was going to say better than this. But maybe not lately. Has he been keeping up on his thank yous lately? Tony's eyes drift away as he seriously considers that. Then he looks back, smiling again.]
Well. Thank you. For saving my life.
[Of course as he looks back to say that he registers what he's looking at, and it happens to be a familiar arm. The hoodie ends up thrust into him because he's too startled to accept it in time.]
Oh. You- [Suddenly he's got a million things he wants to say. Very first on the list is bringing attention to that arm. But if Bucky still looks like that, he doesn't know what their relationship is like. Or if he recognizes Tony at this point. He saved him, so he probably doesn't want to kill him at least, but that leaves a wide range of possibilities. His mouth works silently, starting and aborting thoughts as he holds the rumpled hoodie in front of him.]
Damn. [And he sounds both impressed and shaky, although that could just be the cold.] I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
[Bucky feels that gaze pass over his arm and he instinctively tenses. He's never met Tony Stark face to face before, but he's seen a lot of pictures of him and the rest of the Avengers. He knows Tony is on a team with Steve, which is reason enough to be wary because he's aware how stringently Steve has been looking for him. And finally, he knows this is Howard's son, he knows what he did to Howard--
It's obvious he's been recognised.
His expression drops into something much more guarded and potentially dangerous. He doesn't want this to end in a fight, but he won't shy away from it if it has to.]
Yeah, me.
[His tone makes it clear he does Not Want To Talk About It.]
[He can't help smiling. It's good to see someone familiar, even if they aren't from the same time. (Or place. He does consider that possibility.) Based on Bucky's reaction, he must know Tony, but he seems so displeased to see him that Tony goes back on his initial assumption that Bucky doesn't want to kill him anymore. He seems angry. Maybe he is? But he's still helping him, so the details don't quite add up.
Concern reaches his face, but it doesn't stop him from smiling. He's too happy to have something familiar to lose it entirely. Even if Bucky is glaring at him. Tony pulls on the hoodie, wincing a bit at its condition.]
This is terrible. How long have you had it? We should find you a new one.
[Tony opts for ignoring the tension between them as if it doesn't exist. That has always been a technique that has worked for him before.]
So. What do you know about the spiders? Anything useful we can work with? Maybe I can figure out a way to take control of one. We'd have to catch it first, but it could help us.
[He ignores the question about his hoodie and the state of it, because Tony will soon learn that if he's here for any length of time then he will smell pretty ripe too. Bucky only has one spare set of clothes and it's his Winter Soldier gear, he doesn't wear it too often. Mostly because it stands out in the snow and makes it hard to move stealthily.
He's also all for ignoring the tension and pretending there isn't a lot to talk about.
If Steve were here - something he hopes will happen soon, but with each passing day that doesn't bring a revival seems less and less likely - it would make this meeting with Tony more fraught with possible problems. At least he doesn't have that to worry about.]
I don't know much, they seem to live in the walls and the admin can control them wirelessly. They're only used for injuries that would be fatal otherwise.
[Tony, for his part, has settled into a level of comfort with Bucky that partially comes from the cold and his need to recover. He's not interested in a fight by any means. Bucky, to him, is perhaps rough around the edges, but he made a promise to help him. A promise that he hasn't written off yet just because he happens to be in another place now. True, perhaps this James Barnes isn't the person he was charged with, but he's too tired to really consider that now. Maybe later.]
If I had away to access the signal, I could call them.
[He turns his attention to what little he does have control over, simply assuming that Bucky is going to let him talk.]
They must have a way of connecting with the nanites in our bodies. If I could get just one, I might be able to figure out what they're using them for. Stop them, or change their directives.
I just told you, they don't come out for anything less than fatal injuries.
[He's not disputing that Tony could probably work his magic on them once they've caught one. He's heard all about how Tony outclasses his already brilliant father in pretty much every way, there's not much he can't do with machinery.
What he's trying to get through to him is the dangers of drawing them out in the first place in order to catch one.
Well, that's not a problem. We just need a way to contain them once they come to do their job.
[He waves off Bucky's correction literally with a hand flapping half-heartedly in front of him. The hoodie only adding to the whole lazy gesture.]
Okay. So we'll want to make sure they can't break through whatever we're keeping them in. They're small, so they won't necessarily be equipped with anything strong enough to break through stronger material. Wood probably isn't a good option, but stone might work. Solid metal, but getting enough to keep them in is the question there. We might have to go salvaging first.
[Already he's moving into the planning stage. Tony apparently skipped right over the part where they have to lure them out.]
[He flexes the fingers on his metal hand demonstratively. If there's only one and it's small enough, he should be able to make a cage for it out of his fingers and hold it still until Tony gets it immobilised through mechanical means.
Though he's only going to help with this endeavour if it takes place during this night, he's scarpering as soon as lockdown ends.]
Is there any point asking you again how you plan to lure them out? Or do you want to add more blood to the floor?
[The smile that Tony gives Bucky is smooth and natural and perfectly aware of what he's doing. There is a slight edge to it, the acknowledgment that near death is near death, after all, but nothing worth having is ever cheap.]
Probably not. You already know the answer to that one. It's been effective so far.
[He looks back to the vent that the spiders disappeared to as if he'll somehow be able to spot them.]
In order to make sure he can capture it, for he's the one with the strong metal hand it probably wouldn't be able to get through, he can't be the one near death. He must be alert and ready. Which means Tony would be injuring himself or asking Bucky to do it for him, neither of which he is at all comfortable with.
He might not be comfortable with the man, but he doesn't want to be party to this madness.]
[He raises his eyebrows at Bucky, because surely he must know that they need this to happen. And if Bucky is the one that can actually hold the spiders, then Tony has to be the bait. It only makes sense. He isn't sure what Bucky thinks of him personally, but Tony assumes that there's some acceptable risk for any plan. He looks honestly bemused at the complete rejection of his plan. Who really says *no* to him like that?]
