he's definitely had Some Kind of combat training, he's a noble baby and all the noble babies had combat training, but people seem to have given up on him pretty easily... i headcanon that he was probably just a frail/sickly kid and that he'd panic in close combat situations, but (in the jp text anyway) by the time he was eleven, even haurchefant gave up on teaching him swordplay, so it's probably just not for him

and yet at the steel vigil he's the only one of his trained knights who is NOT panicking so i don't think a lack of wits was the issue there, it's probably just that he's too weak to lift a sword and for some reason never bulked up

similarly, he's been hunting before, but he used a falcon and not a bow??? so no idea if it's just cooler for a nobleman to use a falcon (because they're expensive to train) or because francel can't shoot a bow without getting tired, but i'd reckon it's a little bit of both... i'd like to think he's a better archer than he is a swordsman, he just gets tired after an hour of it or so and then he goes back to his room to read and relax okay

and ishgardian knights are supposed to at least know cure but i think he's just one of those people who can't tap into aether no matter how hard he tries lmfao good luck francel

tl;dr he's had more than his fair share of lessons but i think everyone gave up on him by the time he was ten which is kind of bullshit early to say "this kid's never gonna be a knight" but even francel’s given up on himself anyway

the short version is that he's very much like his dad in this respect... he hated it at first but he's since come around

francel in general has been kind of pissed off at steph for a while because steph clearly has what it takes to be a knight, he's got great charisma and pecs for days and dad wants so badly for him to stop playing with machines, but steph takes all the things francel wishes he had and just squanders them!! (in his view anyway)

and arming commoners is like... francel likes the commoners that work for him well enough, but he definitely... doesn't see them as equals? maybe it's just that sylvaintel arranges for the best stuff to be sent to francel so that he can profit off of it by osmosis, but srsly he has a house full of food while skyfire locks is just barren, i don't think francel has a bleeding heart out to save all his commoner friends...

also wow i just realized that i don't think i mentioned francel is in charge of skyfire locks in my app lmfao

it's basically a series of air raid shelters but whatever his knights seem to run it more than he does

so yeah arming a mob of commoners with guns is a hilariously bad idea to francel, especially because he has been kidnapped and almost ransomed/killed by commoners before so honestly he probably subscribes to the idea that "THERE ARE GOOD COMMONERS BUT LOOK BRO THERE ARE ALSO SOME VERY BAD ONES AND YOU ARE A SHIT JUDGE OF CHARACTER," and also, arming a disorganized group of people with weapons can never ever be a good idea

...since the machinist's guild is actually working out, though, and they even drove off svara, francel’s come around to the idea of it, so now he's just stuck sulking because steph did something better than him again (i make him sound like such a useless fuckboy jfc)

but he does have massive respect for the whole endeavor now

but he still sometimes wishes his big brother were a respectable knight like haurchefant or artoirel

i headcanon that stephanivien actually started the whole machinist endeavor for francel

i cant remember where it was right now but he makes a comment to the effect that guns are great because even physically weak people can use them, and of course it's like, who does he know that is weak... probably his baby brother...

but the problem is that stephanivien seems to have not mentioned this to francel at all and it's still weird that he and his dad don't mention francel when they go straight to his fucking doorstep and i wonder if perhaps stephanivien started the whole thing for francel but got lost in the pursuit, as he usually does, and no one ever told francel that his big brother was working all that time for his sake

(the other problem is that stephanivien gave wind-up haurchefant to the warrior of light so francel’s never going to forgive him, never ever ever, nii-sama is somewhere near the top of the shit list at the moment okay

he can raise an entire guild for francel’s sake but he done goofed)
