Network Prompts
ONE: LISTEN, DOLLFACE
It's no secret that dolls have been the talk of the town, lately. People have been finding them all over Norfinbury: some rag dolls that seem particularly relevant to the Prophet, and some that are unsettling without the apparent connection. Still, it's surprising when you found a doll that looks like another one of the residents. You turn to the network, feeling unsettled, unsure what this could mean. Maybe you aren't alone, or maybe someone has a theory? Come to think of it, you're pretty sure that someone else mentioned finding something similar.

TWO: TIPTOES.EXE IS HERE
Sometime today you find an SD card that downloaded an app to your tablet. It's titled HIDEANDSEEK and has the picture of a doll as its icon. When you open it, it seems like it's a game to play against a digital opponent: a doll. The game appears to have two stages. In the first stage, the doll hides, and you need to travel around the house (is it just you, or does the layout of this house seem to always be the house you're in when you open it?) to find the doll. In the second stage, you need to hide yourself from the doll, and listen for its movements so it can't catch you.

If it does catch you, it will be holding a knife. The screen goes red and the game crashes for the rest of the night. Somewhere on your body, a gash appears. It's nothing fatal, but maybe you should talk to someone about this on the Network.

Action Prompts
THREE: STRANGE THINGS DID HAPPEN HERE
The house that you've found seems promising in terms of useful items to take with you, so you and your traveling companion have spent all day scouring the house for items. At first, everything's fine. Neither of you find or feel anything out of the ordinary. Lockdown approaches, you go to sleep without any additional trepidation...but an odd creaking noise fills your dreams. It gets louder in your ears until you can't stand it anymore and snap awake. When you open your eyes, it's there hanging just above you, swinging in a nonexistent wind: a doll with a broken neck, a noose tied around its neck. It looks just like you.

FOUR: LOOK BEHIND YOU
Maybe you're not unsettled by dolls--and maybe neither is your companion--but one thing is for certain: this house you've been locked into for the night has an odd, oppressive feeling to it. Maybe it's just because it's full of dolls, though they all seem ordinary enough. Nothing strange happens at first, but as the night goes on...you finally notice: wasn't that porcelain baby doll on the other side of the room the last time you were in it? Didn't you turn that other one to face away from where you were sleeping?

The more the night goes on, the more obvious the movements become--sometimes, you even swear you hear the pitter patter of little feet. But nothing ever happens when you're watching. Maybe it's just your imagination. Or maybe, you realize in frustration, your traveling companion is trying to scare you. But is your paranoia worth the confrontation if it is? And will you even believe them if they swear their innocence?

Do you want me to call you Cassel? Or should I call you Sharpe?
theurgy: (Default)

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-28 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Cassel. Sharpe's my last name.

[He was lazy with the username, okay!]

Cassel's weird enough anyway, so I might as well stick with it.
titanette: (001)

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-28 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, but it isn't! It's very handsome. Does it mean anything?
theurgy: (11)

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-28 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
[Cassel laughs quietly, still grinning when he continues.]

Pretty obscure. You ready? It means "castle".
titanette: (008)

in which I realize that maybe I've been mentally mispronouncing "Cassel" all along

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-28 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[She laughs.]

It doesn't! Does it really?
theurgy: (11)

HOW WERE YOU PRONOUNCING IT

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-28 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. My mom wanted to give us all special names, but she didn't think it through much. Barron, Cassel, and... [He pauses dramatically.] Philip.

cuh-SELL DON'T LAUGH AT ME

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-28 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you royalty?
theurgy: (02)

TOO LATE

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-28 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[Cassel laughs again, shaking his head.]

I'm about as far from royalty as you can get.
titanette: (011)

LEAVE

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-28 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh - because, royalty lives in castles, and they've got Barons, and there was a King Philip once, even though he was only king because he married Queen Mary the first.
theurgy: (07)

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-28 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You know a lot about history, huh? Philip was my dad's name. I don't know where she got Barron and Cassel from.
titanette: (011)

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-30 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
She? Were you named by your mother?

[She sounds fascinated by this concept.]
theurgy: (02)

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-30 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Is that... weird where you're from or something?
titanette: (011)

from what I know about his canon I AM SORRY FOR THIS QUESTION CASSEL

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-30 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
No, it isn't, but nobody has ever told me about their mother before. What's she like?
theurgy: (14)

HAHA MELANIE NO

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-30 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
[Cassel pauses for the barest second. "Manipulative" and "loving" are the first words that come to mind, but that's not how normal people describe their mothers, at least not in the same breath, so he covers. He's so used to pretending his family has normal dynamics that he doesn't even consider why he automatically twists things to sound positive, especially here.]

She's a force of nature. She's stubborn and she never hesitates to tell you her opinion on anything, and she loves us like crazy.

[Well, it's not a lie.]

What about you? What's your mom like?
titanette: (011)

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-30 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. She died, a very long time ago.

[That's what she's been told, and she believes it, because why shouldn't she?]
theurgy: (02)

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-30 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh.

[Shit, Cassel, way to go.]

I'm sorry.

[He pauses briefly again.]

Hey, where are you? I can deliver your doll for you, free of charge.
titanette: (011)

let's have them be close so she can try to eat him tbh

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-30 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm near the school - building twenty-seven, on Dr. House's map. That's where I stay.

[It's the house she had woken up in. She moves, of course, when she has to - she'd been affected by the cabin fever once, and it hadn't been pretty. But she stays close, and always returns to her home base.]
theurgy: (11)

that's my goal tbh

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-30 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Alright. I'm by the church. Shouldn't take too long to get over there, barring the usual apocalyptic blizzard or random three day long lockdown.
titanette: (007)

hi5 I love us

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-30 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you're very close!

[She sounds pleased.]

I'll wait for you, okay?
theurgy: (02)

all suffering all the time

[personal profile] theurgy 2016-11-30 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh, cute. Damn it. Cassel doesn't think he's going to be great at taking care of a kid, but he's not enough of an asshole to just leave her alone, either.]

Sure. I'll let you know when I'm getting close.
titanette: (009)

[personal profile] titanette 2016-11-30 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
[While she waits - however long it ends up taking - Melanie keeps herself busy. She putters around the house, arranging and rearranging the meager possessions she's gathered since her arrival, trying to make them look nice. She's never had so many things before. There's the book from Miss Justineau, of course; that had come with her from the base. She sits it on a bookshelf next to two other books (one of which has blank pages) and an empty plastic vase. On the little table in front of the couch, she sets out the food from her backpack, along with a metal fork with slightly twisted tines.

Cassel is very nice, and he's the first person she's going to be meeting face-to-face here. She wants her house to look lovely for him.]
