When did I ever say I was excusing him? Not killing him in cold blood is not the same as letting him go. He murdered Fiona. Of course I want him dead! I'd like to cut his tongue out and watch him choke on his own blood. Doing that, inflicting the things that he might do on him would make me a bad person. I told you I'd kill him if he were actively attacking someone. If I was there when he tried to escape, sure.

A man sitting in a room, tied up? I can't walk in with a gun and just shoot him in the head, much as I would love to.

And you don't think saving lives is worth becoming a bad person. Your morality, that's more important than anything else. That's what we keep circling back to.

He is not just any man. The things he's done and will do - those things do not disappear just because he isn't actively doing them at this moment.

[The problem with Alfie is that he has a way of making his point of view sound infinitely more sensible and reasonable than the person's he's arguing with. And John's just not very good at that game. Which is why he often gets wrangled into things he wouldn't otherwise do with the likes of Sherlock.
