No, I mean I'm a hero now. At least officially. The thing I want most is to find a way around the weapons I spent so many years making. I put so much time into them and relied on them for so long that I don't know if I can stop myself from thinking about them.

But I try not to kill. Even though I know sometimes there's just no other way, I try to avoid it.

Surely there are times when they're just not worth it.

Everyone is worth the attempt. People change. They learn and get better. You don't learn anything if you're dead. That's why I want to at least try to give everyone the chance I had. If, if there's really no other choice, I'll do whatever I need to do, but I wouldn't feel right about saying anyone was worth less effort.

I know. I'm not saying it makes sense. I'm just... It's what I decided I want more than anything. When I quit weapons, I promised myself I'd be different. Even if it took years to get there.

What were you like, before?

Rich. Bored. Wasting my time and wondering when something was going to come to me and make things worthwhile. I just floated from idea to party to late night and nothing ever mattered. None of it. Because I never bothered to make it matter.

I don't actually remember a lot of it. Loud. Sloppy. If I'm in a good mood, I think I'm a lot more entertaining than I really am, and I'm a lot more careless about everyone else's feelings. And their health. Even sober I lived like someone who didn't think he had anything to lose. I didn't. I could make anything I lost back without any effort at all. Later... I realized that wasn't true. But before? When I was younger?

I think the technical term is "public embarrassment."
