Network Prompts
ONE: WE ALL FLOAT DOWN HERE
You're taking your first leap down into the underground tunnels, glad for a break from snowy travel. Everything is going well at first, but then...You see something up ahead. Something colorful? It's hard to tell what it is, but as you cautiously approach it becomes more obvious: a single, floating balloon. There's a curled piece of paper tied delicately to the end of the string. If you dare to read it, it provides you with a simple message:

h͙̟͝e͏͉͍l̯͔͍̩̼̫̣l̢̥̥̩̥̞͓o͘

Or maybe it's something different. No matter what it is, you don't feel very good after reading it. Maybe you should turn to the Network for comfort. Even if they don't have any explanation, at least you might feel a bit better not being completely alone down here.

TWO: THE BEST MEDICINE
Today, you found an SD card for your troubles. It downloaded an app to your tablet titled JOKES.EXE. Figuring you could use a laugh, you opened it to see what it contained. Screen after screen, it generates for you a joke. Once you tap on the lead-in, it delivers the punchline. Only...These jokes aren't really that funny. In fact, they're kind of unsettling. Like someone went out of their way to put a dark spin on them.

The little boy was disappointed he couldn't go to the family restaurant for his birthday party.

He'd already killed his family.

Yeah, that's enough. You put the jokes out of your mind. It's not like it's going to hurt anything. At least that's what you think, until the jokes start inserting themselves into the text you write to others on the Network. Switching to voice or video doesn't help, either. Even though you aren't making any jokes, if you play back your feed, you'll find yourself saying them. Hopefully you don't offend someone during the time it takes you to find a way to uninstall the app.

Action Prompts
THREE: INSIDE JOKE
Overall, you'd say it's been a pretty peaceful night. You try and go to sleep before your traveling companion, knowing that the light of their tablet won't bother you. The real problem is that every time you're about to drift off, they start laughing. Sometimes it's a muted giggle underneath their breath, as if they read something funny, but other times the laughter is outright and uncontained. After awhile you have to ask them to be more respectful and quiet down, but when you sit up and look their way, they only seem confused.

What are you talking about? Of course they weren't laughing. They thought you were the one laughing in your sleep.

FOUR: EVERY NIGHTMARE YOU'VE EVER HAD
It's quite likely that neither you nor your traveling companion was very happy to find themselves stuck in the house with all the clown decorations just before lockdown. But there's no time to find new lodging now, and being uncomfortable is definitely preferable to being frozen, so here you're going to have to suck it up and stay. The only problem is that you feel like there's someone else in the building with you, watching from just out of sight. It sends a paranoid chill down your spine--you're sure you've checked the house top to bottom already, and there wasn't any trace of anyone else--and is it just you, or does that clown statue look disturbingly lifelike?

You get closer, but it isn't breathing, and the eyes are glassy. But wait, that one over there...it wasn't there before, was it? Or, did you just see a spotted piece of fabric move out of the corner of your eye? You can't shake the feeling that one of these clowns is more than just a decoration, but no matter how hard either of you try, you can't seem to find the culprit. Maybe it really is just your imagination running wild, but still, how are you supposed to get any sleep like this?

averytinyparticle: (I am ten and what is this?)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-22 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too.

[He laughs a little, but it's hushed. He's kind of tired of hearing laughter, so the sound is strained. That, and they're both just tired in general.]

What would you do if there was actually someone in here with us?
plaguenurse: (and when he sings to you)

[personal profile] plaguenurse 2017-08-22 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
[That is the question that Diana is trying to answer for herself right at this moment. Fighting is not her area of expertise, though she's not a stranger to physical altercations...

She bites her lip in the beat of silence before she answers.]
Well, I'd try to talk to them first. It would be best if we could cooperate with them. [Or at least get on their good side in the moment. Or distract them so Quark could hide...

Diana hesitates for a moment.]
We don't want to hurt them...
averytinyparticle: (Ehehe...that's true.)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-22 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Right, we don't want to hurt them.

[Quark hesitates, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand.]

I do have a knife though. Just in case, I mean.

plaguenurse: (you'll see a ray of light creep through)

[personal profile] plaguenurse 2017-08-22 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
[That's fair. Diana hates the idea of Quark having to use it, but a child shouldn't be running around this town with no way to defend themselves.]

...maybe you should give me the knife. If something happens, you could distract them while I, um...incapacitate them. [She would not want to make Quark stab somebody...and she knows where she shouldn't stab if she doesn't want them to die, so it's probably best if she takes the messy job.]
averytinyparticle: (I guess so...)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-22 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure, Miss Diana?

[He doesn't want to make her have to hurt anyone. He knows that he's a kid, but...he's been here for awhile. She hasn't. Maybe he's more equipped to handle this than she is. Still, he doesn't want her to feel weak.]

You'll...give it back, right?
plaguenurse: (by fate)

[personal profile] plaguenurse 2017-08-22 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Of course I will. [There's a hint of laughter in her tone, warm and matronly.

It's fleeting, though, as her expression becomes more somber at the idea of fighting someone. She doesn't sound happy, but she does sound resolved.]
I'm sure. I wouldn't let anyone hurt you.
averytinyparticle: (there's a funyarinpa in my hat)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-22 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry! I feel safe in your hands.

[He gives Diana his warmest smile, then reaches into his pocket and pulls out the steak knife he always keeps on hand just in case.]

And I'll protect you, too.
plaguenurse: (you'll see a ray of light creep through)

[personal profile] plaguenurse 2017-08-22 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Even as she smiles down at Quark and takes the knife with her free hand, guilt gnaws at her stomach. She hopes his faith isn't misplaced. She hopes she can do a better job of protecting him than she did the other members of the Dcom Experiment.] Thank you, Quark.

[She gives his hand another squeeze as she leads them further into the house.] Let's just hope it doesn't come to that. Like you said, it'll probably be over by morning, right?
averytinyparticle: (Grandpa told me so it must be true!)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-22 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Right.

[He nods, trying to feel as confident in the situation as he's been doing his best to seem on the surface.]

And if this really is just something funny going on with the building, then...maybe we can make ear plugs out of something.

[Thrifty solutions!]

We'll find a way to get some sleep.

[And so far, as tense and spooky as the atmosphere is...so far, no sign of any unwelcome guests.]
plaguenurse: (for they are treated just the same)

[personal profile] plaguenurse 2017-08-22 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good idea. [Out of what, Diana isn't immediately sure, but they can find something.

She peers into the darkness of one of the adjacent rooms as she speaks.]
I have a music box, too...it would probably be nicer to listen to than the laughing. [It doesn't play for very long, but maybe they could record it on their tablets.]
averytinyparticle: (Cool!)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-23 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
What kind of song does it play?

[He's not too familiar with music boxes. He can remember finding the inner part to one once when he was scavenging. He thought it would be interesting to try and figure out what kind of song it was just by plotting out the space between the bumps. Grandpa said that it might be valuable if they could find some way to have it actually make music...but otherwise, it wasn't good for much.]

I'd like to hear it.

plaguenurse: (by fate)

[personal profile] plaguenurse 2017-08-23 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
[With Quark's hand in one hand and the knife in the other, Diana can't really wind the music box at the moment.] It's based on a play called "The Blue Bird," by Maurice Maeterlinck. [A sad smile touches the corners of her lips.] It's about finding happiness.

[She's listened to it a lot since waking up here without Phi and Sigma.]

I'll play it for you when we're done looking around.
averytinyparticle: (I don't like the sound of that)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-23 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
Finding happiness...

[It sounds like it could be a happy story or a really sad one. Quark thinks about it in silence, and decides he'll wait to ask until after they're finished. He can hear about the story while the music plays.

So they go through the house, room by room by room. Until, finally, they can draw their conclusions. Quark takes a relieved breath.]

Looks like we're in the clear.
plaguenurse: ('til you find a bluebird of happiness)

[personal profile] plaguenurse 2017-08-23 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Diana is quiet too as they search. She's got her mind on her own problems with finding happiness. Even if she escapes this town, who knows what she'll be returning to? It probably won't be happiness, if the state she left her world in is any indication.

At least they don't seem to be in any trouble right now. The house is creepy, but not dangerous, though Diana stays alert as they search. She's relieved to find nothing of note in the last room of the building, and her grip on the knife relaxes slightly.]
I think so too. I guess the laughing was just...one of those things. [Those hallucination things, though she doesn't like to call them hallucinations, since she's used to that as a symptom of serious illness...]

Here, you can have this back. [She offers the knife to Quark.]
averytinyparticle: <user name="bytheceeshore"> (i mean sure)

[personal profile] averytinyparticle 2017-08-23 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

[He takes the knife and pockets it carefully. He's always trying to be conscientious of it; he's gotten hurt enough to slice off a finger out of plain carelessness.]

Maybe it's one of those things that will stop now that we've addressed it. No matter what, we'll be sure to sleep better tomorrow night.

[When they've returned to their things, Quark settles down with his blanket. He was playing on his tablet before, but now, he kind of wants to try to get some rest too. Before that, though...]

So, do they find what they're looking for in the story?
