I'll play it safe for now, but I'm still drinking so there's always hope for horrible embarrassment. Truth.

Well, you're kinda setting yourself up here. What's the most embarrassing thing you've ever done?

Neither one ever turns out good but I've never been arrested for telling the truth.

[Rhys has a thousand stories he could tell and pass off as the most embarrassing, but of course, compulsion insists he picks the worst one. Dammit! This is going to hurt.]

...I burned down a house over thirty thousand dollars in stolen rubies. Also destroyed the guy's Porsche and punched him in the face. And then went to jail for two years for it.

Wait, who stole the rubies? Him or you? Why would anyone want that many rubies, anyhow?

Well, I stole them first and then he stole them from me. Some people take honor among thieves more seriously then others.

[They were nice rubies and $30,000 buys a lot of booze and drugs. It wasn't exactly a bright point in Rhys's life, but he does know how to party...]

So you were a bandit at one point? Cool.

[ Theft and property damage and punching! He'd probably do well for himself on Pandora. Well. As bandits go. ]

Can I ask what jail was like? Where I come from, they're not -- we don't have police. Or laws, as such. It still feels kinda weird that those things are applicable on Earth.

I've been a lot of things in my life, yeah. Not a bandit, more like a cat burglar but I have a bad temper when someone messes with me.

[He laughs quietly. He's still a nice guy, he promises.]

Jail isn't much fun. It's a lot of guys in one place, bored and pissed off. The food's shitty, it's crowded and loud, and if you look cross-eyed at the wrong guy, you can get the shit beaten out of you. The guards keep you from killing each other, but they aren't gonna go out of their way to make you play nice.

Definitely better to stay out if you can. Cops in general aren't always shits, though. Sometimes they're decent. I've had a few help me out.

The guards try to stop you killing each other? Huh. That's pretty wild! Some places back home have detainment centres and stuff, but they aren't really set up for long-term storage. So to speak. And that's mostly on the space station - if you do something on-world that pisses som-- that makes someone mad, you generally just get shot. Or fed to skags. Sometimes both.

[ Usually both. STILL EARTH THAT'S WEIRD, THO. ]

Well, ou go to San Quentin or another max security lock-up? Your chances of getting shanked in the hall are way better. That was for murderers, rapists, really bad people. Laws on Earth depend on where you are, but mostly it tends to be more toward the mercy side. You know, people screw up but they're basically decent.

[He screwed up, but he's basically decent. He likes to think.]

...it's better in theory than in practice sometimes, but it also means you don't get shot for stupid things like graffiti or stealing a car. I guess if you could just put them in a box in space, it might be different, though. As long as you don't plan on ever letting them out.
