Network Prompts ONE: TIME TO CHECK WEBMD You've found the pharmacy, which is really convenient, since you're not feeling that great. Actually, you're feeling terrible. Maybe you have a fever, maybe you're coughing up blood, maybe you're vomiting... Whatever it is, you should probably try to get some medicine for it. Well, if you can figure out what it is. Maybe someone on the network can help you out? Alternately, you know exactly what you have--but for whatever reason, the medicine here isn't something you can easily understand. You have to choose between a couple of options, and you don't know the difference. Hopefully someone on the network can tell you which will heal you and which will probably kill you. TWO: NOT SO HELPFUL AVATARS Every tablet has the option for a customizable avatar that will talk to you and keep your tablet in order. Maybe you set it up, maybe you never checked it. Either way, it keeps popping up unrequested and being sort of... Odd. Flickering, talking in strange, mechanical voices, offering advice that's unhelpful at best and actively harmful at worst... Maybe it's even telling the entire network some things you've been doing you'd rather everyone didn't know. Time to call tech support. Unfortunately, the best option is other people on the network. Good luck. Action Prompts THREE: SCHOOL DAYS You've ended up in the elementary school. Maybe you're grabbing more food, maybe you're exploring. Either way, this place is creepy; the atmosphere is the sort that gets the hair on the back of your neck rising (potentially metaphorically, if you don't have hair or a neck). It's not long before strange things start happening. The sound of running and screaming children, doors slamming in far off or nearby hallways, pianos playing... What's going on? It's hard to tell what's really happening from what isn't happening. Maybe someone who's also exploring has some idea. FOUR: SUPPLY SCRAMBLE You've just walked into a house, and look, there's fresh fruit sitting right out on the counter! How long has it been since you've had some of that? It'll definitely help provide some much-needed vitamins and maybe it will ward off scurvy and the like. There's even more than one piece! ...And there's more than one person here, too. So, what are you going to do? Are you willing to share, or are you prepared to stab someone over a pear? Time to find out just how badly you want that food.

[Al rubs the back of his head in a (very poor) attempt at nonchalance.]

It's for insulation... it's really good for keeping the snow off my skin, and it helps me keep as warm as toast.

[Too far?]

You realize toast is something burning.

[This is a tedious conversation. Well, he'll give the kid credit where it's due. He, in no way, comes off as a horror monster. Way too polite.]

Whatever. You seen the nurse's office in here? Or any route somewhere useful without 'creatures' on it? [He raises his cane for effect.] I don't do running.

Yeah, you actually want to be heading to the convenience store a little bit north east of here.

[He will be grateful for House's lack of patience for chit-chat because it lets them breeze past the awkwardness.]

It's one of the only places here that regularly restocks necessary supplies like food, although... if you want the nurse's office, then is it medical supplies that you need? Are you okay?

[House makes a mental note of the convenience store. That's good to keep track of, then. And what do you know? Iron Man is actually helpful. And also an idiot. A helpful idiot.]

No, I'm looking for the nurse's office because I thought Carol Hathaway might be waiting for me. Do I look all right? Are my teeth clean.

[He raises the cane again, rolling his eyes.]

Hmm... what could the guy with a cane be looking for? Meds. I have what was in my pockets when I arrived here, but that won't last forever. As much fun as it is to be in excruciating pain and unable to walk, I think I'll skip that.

[It's already a pain having to ration himself. He despises the cold.]

Who's Carol Hathaway?

[No, wait, that's definitely not the important thing to take away from this. Focus, Al. He glances around momentarily, just making sure they're still alone and not being closed in on by angry shadow monsters, before he shrugs.]

But for medicine, I think you want the vet's office. I'm not sure exactly where it is, except that it's to the east of here somewhere, but that's where people have told me that they've found medicine.

[A pause, but then he has a feeling he knows what's coming, so he'll pre-empt it.]

Human medicine, not pet medicine.

Kids these days have no culture. You're the reason they killed off Dr. Greene. [Not that he expects the kid to get the reference, but there you are, ER buffs.]

But has anyone checked the nurse's office? Because that seems a lot closer right now. [And closer is better. House casts a speculative look over the tin can. Closer might be especially better when he has the giant kid in armor to take out anything that might try to attack him.] Might be important; you're looking for clues, right?

Mm, okay.

[He doesn't sound convinced, but he's willing to give it a try because he doesn't like to think of anyone in pain when it might be preventable.]

I think Clayton checked it when he was here though, and he's a doctor so he would have known if he found anything useful.

[Still, he starts off walking slowly to make sure his new companion can keep up. The sound of his footsteps is incredibly loud in the quiet school, clanking metal echoing down the corridors.]

If we don't find anything in there then I'll help you get to the vet's office, okay?

[What a helpful kid. It's almost sickening. How much can House prod him, then? Seems like a pushover. Those are always fun.]

Sure thing, pal. So, you've got a doctor here, then? [He limps along beside the kid, the heavy clank of armor making him feel a little less self-conscious about the thunk of his cane.] My experience? They're all morons. I wouldn't trust them.

[Alas and lackaday, Al is way too trusting to think that House is deliberately teasing him.]

[Excuse you, Clayton is his friend.]

Maybe the doctors where you're from aren't very good, but Clayton seems to at least try to help when people need him. I've not had to be treated by him myself, but he gave me some good advice about my brother's prosthetic limbs.

[Cute. Friends with the resident doctor.]

Tries, but doesn't actually help most of the time, then?

[Yep. That's what he's going to hone in on.]

Well...

[He's sure Clayton is a good doctor, but Snowhell isn't a helpful place.]

It's kind of hard to treat people when you can't see them in person, don't have access to supplies, and are being hurt by this town too.

[As House is discovering, himself. Still, why not keep prodding? Might learn something else.]

Those sound like a lot of excuses to me, kid.

[He glances down at House and the slight flare of the lights in his eyes suggest he doesn't like this slight on Clayton, but his tone is still mild.]

Sometimes excuses can be pretty valid. I bet he'll try and help with your leg, he might even be able to do something for you.

[Light flaring... now they're getting somewhere. Or they would be if Al's suggestion didn't immediately sour House's expression.]

Yeah, I'm sure 'Dr. Clayton: Medicine Man' will be able to do something without supplies, while being hurt, and not present. Miracle-worker that he sounds to be. Pick up the pace; sign says the nurse's office is this way.

[He shuffles along a little faster down one of the halls, though Al should be able to keep step with him easily. The shadows seem to grow darker as they go.]

[Al notices the deepening shadows and, if House is paying attention enough to notice, he subtly drops his centre of gravity in a practised fighting stance. He knows that if they come across the shadow creatures then there is no fighting them, it's hard to hit something that's incorporeal, but he can at least try in order to protect House.]

Stay close to me.

[Not going to rise to that bait about Clayton when there may be real danger ahead.]

If it looks like there's trouble then turn around and run, I'll hold off any attacks as best I can.

[House glances sideways at Al. The darkness finally catches his attention, and he slows down a little.]

Gotta ask: You usually throw yourself into danger for complete strangers, kid?

[Not that he's going to complain, but it's good to know if he's just feeling generous today or if the guardian complex is already set in at 15.]

[It set in way before fifteen, Al is a hopeless case when it comes to protecting others. Of course it also helps that his body is made of metal, which makes him pretty damn durable in a fight.

He chuckles, trying to force himself to sound more relaxed than he is.]

Hey, I promised that I'd get you to the vet's office, didn't I? I can't do that if you die on me.

That's comforting. Really.

[This has adrenaline pumping, though.]

What are these creatures you were talking about?

I wish I knew.

[What was that about comforting?]

They're incorporeal for the most part... at least until they want to touch you, and then they kill fast. I've run across a few of them already and the only sure way to get away is to run until you reach a shelter that you can barricade.

[A door slams shut loudly up at the far end of the corridor, and something seems to whisk past them both just out of sight.]

[House goes still. Okay. This is where the morons in the movie keep walking forward, braving the unknown. His tone is casual as he takes step backwards. Potential drugs with potential monster attack aren't as enticing as more certain drugs a little farther away.]

Hmm... Let's avoid having to run. Thinking I should get to know the town better. Let's hit the vet.

I think we should do both.

[There might not be creatures yet, but running would still be the better option now. Besides, it might be necessary to run in order to reach shelter before nightfall.]

Can you run?

[He hooks his cane over one elbow and reaches into his pocket, pulling out a pill bottle. House pops the top, shakes out two and dry swallows them. He's not nearly high enough for this, and it's going to hurt like hell.]

Yeah. [And back in the pocket the pills go. This vet had better have Vicodin.] I'm going to need to hold onto you, though, or I'm going ass over teakettle once we hit the snow.

[That isn't a sight to inspire confidence, a man who needs to pop pills in order to prepare to run... probably isn't going to make it far on his own when it will take at least a couple of hours of solid running to reach the nearest house.]

Are you sure about this?

[He doesn't want to hurt his pride, but...]

I can carry you and run, I might even be faster that way.

[The look House shoots up at Al is nearly venomous. He doesn't mind playing up the cripple act when it suits him. Being pointedly reminded of his own frailties is another matter, entirely.]

I'll be fine, Tin Can.

[For a little bit. A very little bit. It's not just the pain. He can't actually run like he used to. House can manage a shambling, 'three-legged' jog for a time with his cane, though.]

Turn around and start jogging. I'll keep up.

[He doesn't push it now, he understands having pride and he'll let House run for as long as possible. But if it looks like he's flagging, or if those things catch up and he's in danger, Al will pick him up without a second thought. Better to be angry than dead.]

Right!

[He twists, but he lets his companion set the pace. Whatever it is, it's obviously not hard for him to keep up with his ridiculously enormous stride length.]

[If they're going to be fleeing for their lives together, might as well get acquainted.]
