They are rather distinct, yes... I can't say I know many who have tried to tame them, though. One more thing the future has discovered a means for that we haven't, I take it. Unless they're more unique than that.

They're pretty novel from where I'm from too. 'Least I've never run into any other pet hyenas runnin' around. We hadta rescue 'em from a zoo.

Sometimes. [Of course, her hyenas would keep getting confiscated from her even if they weren't used in criminal endeavors.] But mostly they're just rounded up in pens so tourists can come along and gawk at 'em and take pictures.
