Network Prompts
ONE: IF YOU DON'T... Lockdown has just hit, and you're preparing to settle in for the night when, suddenly, there's a noise from your phone. A notification buzz that sounds almost like the naughty laughter of a child. It looks like you have a new app, the icon displaying a jack-o-lantern. Choosing to open it will reveal a screen with two buttons: trick and treat. Only, trying to click on "treat" only garners more of that laughter from before. Maybe that's the trick.
And if you click on "trick"...well, nothing happens. Not to you, anyway, but someone else is bound to find a nasty note in their inbox with your username attached--or maybe even an audio clip of your voice, a brief video of what certainly looks to be you...but you're sure you didn't send this person anything. So what's going on? Nonetheless, whatever "trick" was received from you (or maybe you're the one on the receiving end) someone's got some explaining to do.
TWO: THE UNLUCKIEST DAY You don't wake up feeling as if today is any day different from any of the others...but that all changes very quickly when something unfortunate happens. Maybe you pull your tablet out of your bag to find that the screen appears shattered like a mirror. Maybe the dark outline of a black cat pads along the bottom of your inbox. Maybe cement-like cracks appear along your keypad as you try to type, warning you not to step on them. Or maybe still, the shadow of the slope of a ladder looms ominously over your screen. Whatever it is, the end result is the same: suddenly, you're experiencing terrible bouts of back luck.
It could come in many forms. Maybe you're tripping over your feet more than usual. Maybe you opened your bag after traveling to find a hole had ripped through the bottom and your lost some useful inventory. Maybe your rations have gone bad. Maybe you even injure yourself. Regardless of how it manifests, the status effect lasts until the rest of the day. Maybe you can turn to the network and see if others are experiencing the same or similar problems--or maybe someone has an idea on how to reverse it.
Action Prompts
THREE: MONSTER MASH You and your traveling companion have some quick thinking to do. Why? Because you were just chased not by one or even two anomalies, but by a whole hungry hoard. It's a miracle, you think, that the two of you were able to make it in unscathed...but it doesn't take long for you to realize that getting inside was hardly the difficult part. You've chosen an unfortunately big building to hide in, and between the two of you there aren't enough hands to hold down all the windows and block all the doors. What's worse: lockdown is still a few hours away.
It looks like you have a few options: try and systematically block every exit point before the anomalies can make their way through them, make a break for a different building, or let them in and take shelter deeper in the house, in a room with a single door that will hopefully be able to hold until morning.
There are, of course, ups and downs with each course of action. Can you get all the windows fast enough? Can you outrun all the anomalies from such a short distance? If the monsters are locked inside with you, is there a possibility that they'll still be there the next morning? Regardless, you have to think fast. You'll only have one shot at getting this right.
FOUR: GIVE ME SOMETHING GOOD When you first find this house, you think you and your traveling companion have hit the jackpot. The cabinets are bursting with food, the closets and cupboards bursting with useful supplies--even electronics! At least, that's how it seems. But then you look closer, and nothing's real.
Everything's filled with neatly wrapped candies in plain black and orange paper. That backpack is made of tissue paper--that sleeping bag crumbles when touched, a very realistic dust sculpture. What's worse, only some of the candies prove to be candies. Others, neatly packaged teeth, eyeballs, spider carcasses...
But are those even really there? You might step in one room and back out again to discover the whole place empty, your findings, horrible or otherwise, completely imagined.

[He huffs, sitting cross-legged and propping his chin on his hands.]
You really think I would be that stupid? [He immediately props up his finger, pointing at the screen.] Do not answer that.
no subject
[ Not touching the bit about the smell. She can imagine how bad it must be without requiring additional descriptions. ]
No, of course not. I was only asking. I know that you're not stupid.
[ Oh. She answered that anyway. Oh well. ]
no subject
[The plain and pragmatic admission of her concern takes all the attack out of him and Flynn frowns, awkwardly touching his face. It's easy to talk to Nicole and it's incredibly hard to get used to her being on the lookout again after all this time.
It's nice.
It's nothing he wants to risk, not when leaving Norfinbury means losing her - again.]
Then why'd you send me that text?
no subject
What text? I haven't sent anything. Unless...
There was a curious app on this tablet that I don't recall seeing before.
no subject
An app? What kind of app?
no subject
[ Of course that would be what gets his interest. ]
no subject
[Yes, that's 'us', not 'me', because you are the one who opened an unknown app, Nicole, and he is so dragging you into the responsibility.]
So. Does that mean if I meet you on a dark night, I'm good?
no subject
Us? There's no us here. If I recall correctly, you're the one who thought I sent it to you.
[ Of course she's mostly joking. Mostly. ]
For the moment, yes. I can't make any guarantees, however.
[ Again, she's totally and completely joking. Right? Right. ]
no subject
[Of course. Just as he's mostly amused. It's a familiar pattern, and it's... comforting in this old, crumpled house he finds himself in tonight, even if it's just over video.]
Right. Because that isn't ominous or disconcerting at all.
no subject
[ Honestly, Flynn. What sort of Guardian do you take her for? ]
Oh, I thought you knew: those are my two favorite words.
no subject
[He furrows his brow, digging through his messenger bag for some - unspoiled - food to nibble on. He settles for a granola bar, one of his few luxuries, but his mood and stinging face demand it.]
And here I always thought they were 'contentious' and 'dominant'. [It's a snarky reply but his lips twitch into a quick treacherous smile.]
So, uh, how was your day?
no subject
Clever. Have you been waiting to use that line on me for long? I'd say it's a slight improvement over the one involving the golden ratio.
[ Her smile widens just a bit. ]
My day's been fine. Cold, like I mentioned before, but uneventful for the most part. There was a bit of trouble involving a pack of anomalies, but I got away from them.
no subject
Besides, it still holds true.
[He doesn't really mean to say it, it just slips out in their familiar rhythm and he clears his throat, suddenly very interested in the wrapper of his candy bar. That is, until his brain catches up with the rest of Nicole's story.]
Wait, what? Anomalies? [His head snaps back up with impressive speed.] What do you mean, anomalies, are you alright?
no subject
Oh, now, you're just trying to flatter me.
[ She waves her hand in what she hopes is an airy motion. Of course his comment means a lot to her, but she doesn't want to let on about just how much it actually does. ]
I mean they were chasing me, and of course the only building around was one so big there was no way to block all the windows and other openings.
[ She pauses for dramatic effect. ]
Are things here always so exciting?
no subject
Yes, they are, and you really shouldn't sound so thrilled about it. You say exciting, I say horrible and terrifying.
[Not that he isn't used to it by now. Really, she would be excited to be chased down by these abominations. Why is he even surprised.]
And will you not stop in the middle of the story!
[He is on the edge of his seat... rug... here, Nicole!]
no subject
[ She's smiling; she won't poke at him too much. Honest. ]
What can I say? I do like a little adventure, and you can't have adventure without a dash of danger.
[ Her eyebrows lift in surprise. ]
I'm sorry, I didn't think you'd be so interested. So there I was, in a building too large and with too many windows and openings, and five or so anomalies outside trying to break in.
But luckily for me and the person I was with, there was a room further inside with a door. We thought if we could barricade ourselves in there, at least we stood a chance of surviving.
no subject
And I don't mind a dash of danger. I do however mind getting my extremities torn from my torso and munched on while I try to crawl away. Only I can't crawl away because oh, look at that - no limbs!
[Flynn gestures agitatedly, then frowns, looking almost a little offended.]
Why would I not be interested? You were attacked, of course I'm interested! I mean, clearly you survived, yes, but... still. [He worries, alright?]
So, you reached the room?
no subject
I should hope so. I'd have to ask you if you were feeling all right if you said you didn't mind that. Of course, I'd have to stop that from happening in the first place.
[ As the Guardian, and all. ]
You might have other, more pressing matters at hand, such as seeing to that fake dead bear of yours. [ Because staying warm is important. Yes. That's the takeaway here. Still, she's touched that he'd worry about her. It's often her doing the worrying about him, so she appreciates it. ]
I did, yes; and I managed to barricade it successfully. If not, you wouldn't be talking to me right now.
[ There. That's a completed story, more or less. Now she's going to turn her attention fully towards him and what he might need. ]
And how was your day?
no subject
Well, that fake bear isn't going anywhere. ... I hope.
[But he's huddling himself into his layers, munching on the bar. See? He's a big boy, he can take care of himself. No need for her to be so worried all the time.]
Well, I, uh. [Ear-scratch.] I fell.
[He just lets that stand there for a moment. Then wonders why he even admits to it in the first place. Then decides that maybe the time to go back to that other story is right now.] So how many geeks do you talk to?
no subject
[ This place is difficult enough without that particular concern added to the mixture. She is watching him rather closely, or at least, as closely as the tablet will allow. He seems all right, which comes as a relief. ]
You fell? Should I ask how?
[ Of course he would attempt a subject change, but not before Nicole's been satisfied that he actually is all right. ]
I've never had to put a number on it, but I'd say it's around four or five.
[ Or ten, but she doesn't particularly want to give him a conniption. ]
no subject
[Flynn purses his lips petulantly and with a sudden urge to inquire. Four or five? Who are they? What do they do? Shouldn't he know them since she's from a time where they were still traveling together? But then he remembers the women that have since entered (and left) his life and he decides that maybe, just maybe, it's not the best idea to delve too deep into that particular subject right now.]
Face first. [Wait.] Wait, that's not what you-- stone. There was a stone! Under the snow?
no subject
[ Or he can. Assuming he's got a defensive weapon on him somewhere. ]
You know, I do seem to remember you hit your head on things quite often. I realize it's not on purpose, but I wish that you wouldn't.
[ Honestly. Be more careful with that head of yours. She likes it intact. ]
You are all right, though, aren't you?
[ All ribbing aside, she really does worry about him at times. ]
no subject
[Flynn feels like further reminding her of certain tree branches flicked back into his face by a certain someone but once again her straightforward inquiry takes the fight out of him. Despite himself, the promise of making her way over to fight a fake animated bearskin in his honor brings a smile to his face.]
Yeah, I'm fine. Really.
Just a bit of injured pride.
no subject
[ She does remember those tree branches, thank you very much! ]
I see that smile. That's more like it.
[ She's always liked his smile; she just doesn't state it as plainly as that, because feelings are complicated. ]
So where on the map are you?
no subject
Yeah, yeah.
I'm in the Radiation Zone. Was on my way to the Convenience Store but didn't quite make it today. Found some socks, though! [He slips his feet out from underneath his blanket fort, wiggling his toes at the screen for a moment.]
