Network Prompts
ONE: A DENTIST'S FIELD DAY
Frozen food and convenience store snacks have not been kind on your teeth. You’ve gone so far without any real problems, but one false bite and you hear a definite crack. If that wasn’t enough, the pain floods your jaw almost instantly, and it only gets worse as the day goes on. If you hoped it was a false alarm, those hopes are getting thinner by the minute. It’s just your luck that you don’t know where the closest doctor is. Fortunately, there’s plenty of ice to keep the swelling down, but you’re hoping for some sort of immediate relief. At least so you can get a bit of sleep without the throbbing keep you awake and uncomfortable.

Maybe someone else can give you some advice. Or at the very least, maybe someone can distract you from your toothache. Or maybe, upon further inspection, you find that there was never a toothache at all. Maybe the pain is suddenly gone as if it was never there to begin with.

TWO: THAT'S A MOUTHFUL
As far as Norfinbury goes, you've gone about your day with relative ease. Nothing's been more unusual than any other day, and you can't say that you've had any particular difficulties. Maybe you've even been productive or had some good finds in your searches. Finally, though, as you settle down for the night, something you come across on the Network...isn't quite right. The glitch doesn’t make itself known until you start to talk to someone through the video function, and even then, it doesn’t seem to happen with everyone. When it does appear, however, it’s impossible to ignore.

Something is wrong with the video feed. Everything appears like dark, angry static--everything except for the person’s mouth. Their mouth is too big, too painfully clear, moving too fast and too erratically for the things that they’re saying. And the longer you watch, the more you feel the sound of their teeth clanking together echoing echoing echoing inside of your head. It would be pretty rude to cut off the conversation when you don’t know if anyone else is experiencing this same problem, but you can’t take it forever. Maybe you can do a hard reset on this video chat. Or maybe, for the more curious-minded, you can trigger the glitch again.

Action Prompts
THREE: THE TOOTH FAIRY
Something is making its way toward you: an anomaly. From a distance, it seems human...almost human. But then it gets closer, closer, and it appears more and more wrong. It’s a creature made entirely of teeth. Gnashing, gnawing, churning, biting teeth. Its eyes are mouths, its mouth is a vortex of pearly whites reaching deeper and deeper inward into its own body. Its skin seems to keep moving as its teeth seek sustenance. It’s hungry, and it’s coming after you. You and your traveling companion may not have too much trouble getting into a building before lockdown, but there’s no guarantee it’ll leave you be the moment the door is closed behind you.

In fact, you may want to keep an eye on the windows.

FOUR: DECKED IN PEARLS
You notice right away that something’s wrong with the house that you and your traveling companion have wound up in, but with lockdown upon you there isn’t time to worry about it until you’re already stuck inside. At first it seems that the place is decorated in an interesting, indiscernible pattern. Upon further inspection, however, you find that each inch of every wall has been covered in rows and rows of human teeth. There are human teeth in jars, human teeth knit into blinds, human teeth glued into the furniture. They can’t really be real, can they? There’s just so many.

But, hey, maybe if you have insomnia, you can try to count them for laughs.

[ Cue a dry laugh. ] Oh, you know, sometimes you amuse me greatly. They won't wait for you to explain. They'll latch on the first person they see, and whoever's unlucky enough to get caught by them is in for a very miserable time.

[ But common sense says that won't be Flynn, not even in this theoretical scenario. Jenkins would throw himself in the path of the ghosts before he let that happen to the Librarian. He might enjoy jerking Flynn's chain, but he won't stand by and let anything bad happen to him. ]

To do that properly, I'd have to open the jar and pour them out.

I hate ghosts.

[Flynn just tilts his head back and closes his eyes with the world's most pained expression.]

Fine. Just... don't do an oracle reading of how they fall or tell me how fascinating they are or whatever else you were planning for commentary.

Do you? I'm sensing there's a story behind that, because people typically don't just decide they dislike ghosts without a good reason for it.

[ But for the moment, Jenkins' attention is diverted by the jar and the teeth and partly by unnerving Flynn. But he's not going to readily admit to that. ]

No? How disappointing. I do enjoy a good oracle reading.

[ And without further preamble, he twists off the lid and pours out the contents. ]

People typically aren't attacked by their screaming faces either. Really, what is it with all the raaaargh and the charging?

[When the teeth rattle onto the table Flynn's face scrunches up even more and he throws his hands in the air, muttering to himself.]

I bet you do. So what now?

[A beat.]

You're not gonna ask me to take a look, are you?

A little too interested in the dramatic? Why else would anyone make a sound like raaaargh?

I just want to get a good look at them. You don't have to do the same unless you want to, and you've made it quite clear that you don't.

When are ghosts not being dramatic...

And that's right, I don't. Those used to be in someone else's mouth. ... As it usually goes with teeth but that's neither here nor there.

[But of course he can't stop himself from watching the trainwreck on the table.]

... These were pulled while the people were still alive.

Well, almost never, but that is supposedly part of the appeal for some people. [ For some people, not him, of course. And certainly not for Flynn, judging from his reaction. ]

Well, yes, that is normally how it works with teeth.

[ He does arch an eyebrow at that observation, and glances back down at the assortment of teeth there. ]

I suppose they weren't removed by a dentist.

I don't think so.

[With one final, reluctant sigh Flynn approaches. Why is this his life again?]

See the color difference on the upper and lower end? They didn't have time to bleach out by years or weather.

[He leans down to squint at the assembly in front of him, dramatic agitation slowly ebbing away in the wake of focus.]

Though they're strangely intact. No cracks or marking to indicate that they were removed with crude tools. Whoever did this sure knew what they were doing.

Yes, I see those. Well spotted, I don't think I would have noticed them. [ Well, he might have after some time of closer inspection, but Flynn's powers of observation have just saved them some time. ]

Well, perhaps it wasn't a dentist, but someone who specializes in the removal of teeth. However, reason tells me that is not likely to be the case. I hesitate to think that the teeth contained in jars were intended for eventual use as a grim sort of wall decoration.

[ If the rest of the house is any indication. ]

I wonder how many unfortunate people had their teeth removed.

Too many if you ask me.

Maybe there's something different about these teeth? [He moves back to the wall, taking another close look at the ones on the wall to compare, muttering to himself.] I don't see it...

They look like ordinary human teeth to me. [ He looks closer at the teeth from the jar, not really spotting anything, until he sees something odd. ]

What about this one?

[ He separates it slightly from the group so that Flynn can see what he's looking at. ]

[personal profile] cahooted 2018-01-27 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Which one?

[It takes Flynn a second to realize that Jenkins is talking about his own little collection on the counter, not the array that he is currently examining. With one final look at the wall he comes back over to join him.]

Did you find anything?

All of these appear to be human teeth, except for this one. It seems to be made from the same substance as the others, but the shape is- odd. Pointed. And no, I don't believe it looks like a vampire's fang.

[ To the untrained eye, perhaps, but to Jenkins, this one just looks like an abnormality. ]

[This is SO NOT what he wants to hear.]

Great. Clearly it's not enough to be stuck in the teeth house, of course we have to have monster teeth, too.
