Network Prompts
ONE: IT WON'T BE LONG NOW... Well, you made a mistake. You spent too long searching around, or you ran outside near the end of the day for just one more thing, and now you've been locked out. You can search around all you want, but the best shelter you can hope for is pressing against the side of a sealed up building. You do still have your tablet, though. Maybe someone on the network can give you some advice, or at least some comfort while you wait for hypothermia to set in.
TWO: CABIN FEVER Maybe you didn't want that mistake of getting caught outside to happen again, but now you've ended up staying too long in one location, and cabin fever has set in. Maybe you're taking to the network to try and ignore the hallucinations. Maybe you want to tell everyone that you've figured out they're all in on your kidnapping. Maybe you ended up wandering off and now you'd really like to know if anyone can check back in the place you were at for your pants.
Action Prompts
THREE: AN UNEXPECTED MEETING You're going about your business searching what seems like it might be an especially promising house--it's fully intact and there's even a working fireplace with some wood! It looks like someone else has the same idea, though, and you've run into them in the middle of your search. Do you share the potential wealth or try to kick them out? On the other hand, maybe you know who this is, or maybe you're just glad to actually see another person for the first time in ages.
FOUR: GOOD MORGUE-NING You've just woken up in a morgue after dying in one unfortunate way or another. You have no idea where you are beyond that, but your tablet is insisting you can't stay here, so you should probably get out of here pretty quickly. Of course, bringing people back from the dead isn't a perfect science, so you're missing something important to you. Maybe you've lost your voice, maybe you can't remember where you're from, maybe you can't remember where you are right now. It looks like someone else is nearby, though. Maybe they can help you out?
[She's grateful that someone at least answers. The frightened tension in her face eases some, just hearing another voice.]
I'm Asami.
[It's strange, how so much snow swallows sound. Asami has been in danger before, even mortal danger. But it was always so fast and loud. Metalic crashes and charged tension.
Out here it's just... nothing.]
I think it's been three weeks. I can't remember, now.
[She's kept track this whole time, but right now, her mind is blank.]
[He smiles a bit as her expression relaxes a little. Sometimes just knowing somebody's listening can do wonders, even he'll admit that.]
It's been about two, for me. Enough time to know this place gives me the heebie jeebies, that's for sure.
[He's genuinely sorry she's stuck outside. Even when he was doing the Organization's dirty work, he never enjoyed seeing people suffer, and this place is harsh enough without condemning people to a slow, freezing death. He's never dealt with extreme hypothermia before, though; he hopes it's just kind of like falling asleep, like they always show in the movies.]
So what's home like for you, Asami? I always like to hear about new places.
Yeah, my hometown never got this cold, either. We saw snow in the winter, but never like this. Only time I ever encountered cold like this was at the summit of a mountain. [He did not request to go back to the Land of Dragons after that, either.
[He listens quietly as she goes on, but none of the places she mentions sound familiar. So she's from a world the Organization never touched, it seems. That's good; the fewer worlds the Organization had managed to stumble upon, the better. Trouble had just followed them everywhere, and now with Xehanort seeking a final vessel, the trouble only stood to be greater.]
Republic City, huh? Never been there, myself, or to the Earth Kingdom, for that matter. The biggest city in the world, though? That's quite a feat. I bet there's all kinds of neat stuff to do there.
My hometown was pretty small, but it had a really big castle. My best friend and I, we used to try and sneak inside all the time, but we kept getting caught by the guards. Guess we needed to work on our ninja skills.
Mm, something like that. Admittedly I'm not certain what Ansem's title was--he was just called Ansem the Wise. I don't know that he was royalty, but he was kind of like the mayor of Radiant Garden--that's the name of the world I grew up on--and he spent most of his time in the castle basements, so far as I know.
[He taps his chin in thought. He doesn't talk about home much, but Asami seems interested in this, so he'll make the exception. Honestly, home is a bit of a sore subject for Lea, but he's learned a hard lesson in what selfishness can get you. He can talk about home for a dying girl.]
He was a scientist. You might say he specialized in... the human condition. He studied hearts. [Er, wait.] Ah, not the... [He pats his chest.] Not this one. His work was more with the ethereal heart, I guess you might say. He and his apprentices were studying how the heart was tied to emotion.
Something like that. It's like... [How can he put this?] Like people are kind of two parts: there's the body, which houses the soul--like the personality? [For lack of a better way to explain it. When he lost his heart, he was still mostly the same person, he just couldn't feel anything.] And then there's the heart, which houses the emotions. So if you take them apart, you just get monsters that are less than people. One is all emotion, seeking more hearts to feed itself, and the other is just an empty husk, seeking hearts to replace the one it lost.
[That's what he'd been: a monster. That's what they had all been. He wasn't going to romanticize it. But Asami didn't need to know that part.]
Anyway. Ansem camped out in his lab in the basement of the castle and spent all his time trying to quantify the heart. I guess he finally figured out you couldn't really do that, though. I don't think you can just put hearts in a nice neat box that explains each and every one--they're too different, too complicated.
[It's a fairly common concept, in her world, to the point where it's less a concept and more just common knowledge: A person is made up of their body and spirit. Anyone closely enough connected to the energies of the world around them and inside them can separate the two.]
I don't know if you could ever put numbers on feelings. It sounds like your world's science is a lot different from mine. But then I was a physicist much more than I was a biologist, so maybe I wouldn't even know.
You're a scientist too, huh? [He smiles a little.] Science was never really my thing, actually, so I'm not entirely sure what the difference is between different types. I was always more interested in languages and brain games. I mean, I like figuring stuff out, but on a less... rigid scale, I guess you could say. I don't want a list of things that make up a person, I wanna know what makes them tick.
I like to think that all the sciences can learn and borrow from each other. Natural laws are natural laws, and everything functions for some kind of purpose. Even then, we'll never completely know what those laws are. That's why we're constantly discovering new things.
[He looks a bit stunned. A psychologist? He knows the term, though he's not familiar with all the nuances. He never actually thought of it that way.]
I... guess kind of like a psychologist, yeah. [He scratches his head a little.] Sheesh, I hadn't considered that. I guess you make a good point, though: everything in life is kind of one big chain of cause and effect. Maybe knowing the scientific reason for the way somebody ticks is kinda useful, too.
So what's a physicist do? I mean, I know what physics is, it's kind of fun to defy it when I can, but what sort of... I dunno, experiments did you do?
[Asami switches the tablet between her hands. Her fingertips are going numb.]
I build things. I'm an engineer, so I have to understand how aerodynamics and- [Okay, step back, that probably sounds like gibberish.] I have to understand how everything physically works. If I'm building an airplane, for example, I have to take into account how the air is going to interact with the plane. And I have to shape it in a way that minimizes drag.
and here I was thinking I would never find a place with worse weather than Maine.
( not that he was there long... just long enough to know it was rather miserable. he can only imagine how cold it could get with actual winter, and well, he doesn't suspect it's half as bad as this. it's easier to complain about the chill than it is to complain about being trapped. again. )
usually I'm not one to take census, but it could be useful here how many of us are there? does anyone have any idea how we got here, or more importantly, how to get out? because I need a way out, and quickly.
( things were dire back in Storybrooke, and he may not be in the possession of the magic bean anymore, but he knew more about the island than most. he wanted to help save Henry. it was too late to make amends with Baelfire, but it seemed a fitting tribute to try and save his son. he's more than motivated to find a way out, so he's reaching out. it'll be easier if he's not fighting on his own. )
how far has anyone traveled? the weather is wretched, but I might be able to get a map together, know what houses are best for staying in. not all of them are built the same.
( and one last, rather bleak reminder: )
make sure you're inside when those bloody doors lock.
ACTION / NETWORK;
( he's not sure how it happened. he's usually smarter than this. survival is supposed to be the only thing he's good at, and yet here he is. in a coat that is not thick enough for this weather, watching the snow fall, and knowing there's no way he'll live to see the morning.
he's spent so long getting so close to death and avoiding it all the same. usually it all happens so quickly he can't think and can't worry about it catching up to him. it's only after the fact that he realizes how close it was. not this time, no, as his body gets progressively colder he gets to think on everything he regrets. everything he's done, and all the things he wishes he hadn't. three hundred years leaves plenty of time for regrets.
he's built a lacklustre wall of snow to try and protect him from the wind, but nothing will protect him from the temperature. he's cold enough now that he's not shivering, anymore... which is more alarming than comforting. he's tried too many doors, walked far enough he's not sure he can get any farther. his fingers are stiff with cold and a little blue as he plucks at the keys to the tablet. )
what happens when you don't make it inside in time?
You build airplanes? [He looks so impressed right now.] Man, that's awesome. I've actually never even been on a plane, but I really want to try it one day.
What all have you built? I bet this guy from my hometown would just love to chat with you. He builds Gummi Ships--ah... they're like ships that can travel between worlds. [Don't ask about the gummi part, he isn't even sure he wants to think about it. Flying around in space in a ship made of candy just sounds ridiculous and completely unsafe.]
[Well, Radiant Garden hadn't had cars. Where else was he going to learn? The Driving School That Never Was?]
Sounds like you've done a lot of really impressive stuff, Asami. [He actually finds himself hoping she can engineer herself a way to stay alive through the night, because he'd like to talk to her more, but... so far as he knows, no one has ever survived a night outside. And sure, sometimes people come back, but not always, and at what price?] I think the most impressive thing I ever did was break my arm in three places falling out of a tree when I was twelve.
[His brow furrows a little as she has to stop and think, and he wishes more than anything right now that he still had his command over fire. He's already caused so much hurt, let down so many people... and now he can't even save one dying girl? What good is he?
[If this is all he can do, though, he'll do it. He'll keep her company as long as he can. No one should have to die with no one there to hear their thoughts.]
I don't think I've ever seen an airship. I've seen pirate ships, and Gummi Ships... are airships just like really big airplanes? I guess they're probably slower, huh?
Fuck... [ The curse isn't so much said as it is breathed as Touka slumps against the door of the house she had been staying in for the last few days, her weight doing nothing to shift the entrance on its hinges. How stupid could she have been, thinking she would make it back in time? Try as she might-- and she still tried in spite of knowing damn well that it didn't mean anything-- she couldn't move as quickly as she had when her kagune was in working condition. So why had she thought it would be a good idea, venturing out so late in the day?
In any case, she was paying for it now. A pool of dread was beginning to form in her gut, roiling and bubbling as she hugged herself, trying to stay as comfortable as possible. She pulled out her tablet, staring at it in silence before switching it on.
On the upside, there was no one for her to fail by dying. Not here, anyway. The menial food stores that she and her partners had managed to accumulate were safe, and she hadn't had anything of particular value on her when she'd been caught outdoors. It's with this thought in mind that she turns on the video feed, lines of exhaustion creasing her face as she sags further against the door. ]
Hey. To anybody that knows me: I'm pretty much dead. [ It's an awkward opening to an even more awkward video, but bear with her. ] I don't know how this works, but anyone who finds me can have the shitty rations in my bag. [ A pause before she speaks again. ]
No, fuck that. They're mine. [ With that, she opens the bag and pulls out the flavorless rations, tearing open the package with a deafening riiiip. It wasn't as sustaining as actual meat, but it was something. She takes a bite, her face expressionless as she swallows. Even without all those years of training herself to fake enjoyment of human food, the rations themselves are too bland to be offensive. ]
Anything else in there goes to whoever finds me, I guess. Just... leave my phone alone. [ In all honesty, she wasn't sure how death in Norfinbury worked. Not entirely. Still, she found herself ruefully staring at the small rabbit charm attached to her long-dead phone, her free hand gripping it tightly.
If she were to be honest, she was scared shitless. But there was no point in any of that now. Curling her knees to her chest, she buries her face in them, letting the tablet drop somewhere by her feet with a dull thud. ]
Fuck this shitty place.
three
[ Was there a single inch of this place that wasn't cold as fuck?
Dressed in layers of rags and salvaged clothes that Touka had found about Norfinbury, Touka wandered the streets almost aimlessly, looking for a new place to settle down. Her old digs weren't cutting it for her anymore, as it had been raided while she was out. She wasn't too worried about being inside by nightfall; she had, at the very least, three to four hours before she needed to settle in.
Thankfully, she didn't need to search long, as she stepped across the threshold of a house she'd never seen before. It looked decent enough, but what really caught her eye was the fact that there was a sizeable pile of wood near the fireplace. Someone had obviously been stockpiling, though there was a thin layer of dust covering the wood. Whoever had lived there previously hadn't been around in a while.
For the first time in what felt like ages, Touka found herself smiling.
... At least until there was a shuffling noise behind her, prompting her to lunge at one of the logs, gripping it tightly in her hands as she spun on her heel to face the intruder. ]
Huh. So kinda like hot air balloons? Except with propellers... [He tries to conjure a mental image, and it winds up looking kind of absurd.
[He makes a bit of a face then when she asks about Gummi Ships.]
Ah, well... So this guy from my hometown, Cid, he found this elasticky stuff called Gummi Blocks, and it apparently was able to travel between worlds. I'm not actually certain why or how--I heard they might actually be pieces of a barrier that collapsed around each world, but don't quote me on that. In any case, Cid decided to try and build a ship out of these Gummi Blocks, which would allow people to travel between worlds safely. He was working on the blueprints for a long time, before...
[He really doesn't want to have to explain the fall of Radiant Garden.]
Before he had to relocate. And he finally figured it out, I guess, 'cuz my pal Sora's been flying around in one ever since.
I don't think the Gummi Blocks are actually like gummy candy, even if they kinda look and feel like it. I'm not sure, though--I never tasted one. The whole idea of flying around space in a ship made of gummy anything, though, kinda weirds me out.
