TEST DRIVE MEME

If you'd like to apply to Snowblind and would like to test the waters first or get a sample set up for your application, this meme is for you! We've even provided some prompts for you to use if you want (but feel free to make up your own). Here's how it works.
✭ Reply to this entry with a character you're considering apping into the game. You can include the name of your character and the fandom in your subject line.
✭ Comment around to others on the meme, whether you're in the game already or not.
✭ Now you have a sample ready for your application!
✭ So go reserve and apply when reservations and applications are open.
✭ Seriously, do it.

Network Prompts
ONE: IT WON'T BE LONG NOW...
Well, you made a mistake. You spent too long searching around, or you ran outside near the end of the day for just one more thing, and now you've been locked out. You can search around all you want, but the best shelter you can hope for is pressing against the side of a sealed up building. You do still have your tablet, though. Maybe someone on the network can give you some advice, or at least some comfort while you wait for hypothermia to set in.

TWO: CABIN FEVER
Maybe you didn't want that mistake of getting caught outside to happen again, but now you've ended up staying too long in one location, and cabin fever has set in. Maybe you're taking to the network to try and ignore the hallucinations. Maybe you want to tell everyone that you've figured out they're all in on your kidnapping. Maybe you ended up wandering off and now you'd really like to know if anyone can check back in the place you were at for your pants.

Action Prompts
THREE: AN UNEXPECTED MEETING
You're going about your business searching what seems like it might be an especially promising house--it's fully intact and there's even a working fireplace with some wood! It looks like someone else has the same idea, though, and you've run into them in the middle of your search. Do you share the potential wealth or try to kick them out? On the other hand, maybe you know who this is, or maybe you're just glad to actually see another person for the first time in ages.

FOUR: GOOD MORGUE-NING
You've just woken up in a morgue after dying in one unfortunate way or another. You have no idea where you are beyond that, but your tablet is insisting you can't stay here, so you should probably get out of here pretty quickly. Of course, bringing people back from the dead isn't a perfect science, so you're missing something important to you. Maybe you've lost your voice, maybe you can't remember where you're from, maybe you can't remember where you are right now. It looks like someone else is nearby, though. Maybe they can help you out?

ᴏᴘᴛɪᴏɴ ᴏɴᴇ

[ He shouldn't have pushed himself to go that little bit further. That wasn't the wise thing to have done. Adversty wasn't something he was a stranger to, and time had normally been on his side. The irony of the situation is almost funny, but Link doesn't smile.

Instead, he leans up against the house that he hadn't been able to reach, and remembers a time when he had come to a stop in front of a rising drawbridge.

He'd been younger then.

His hands - already numb from cold - fumble with the tablet as he types in a message.
]

The last time this happened, I had to fight Stalchildren until the sun rose.

ᴏᴘᴛɪᴏɴ ᴛʜʀᴇᴇ

Cold was a terrible enemy. Link shoulders his way into the house as soon as he finds the door unlocked. Snow is caked on his boots and his coat's collar is almost iced from his breath. The wood he'd tied to his bag clatters as he drops it to the ground.

Grabbing a few sticks, he shuffles to the fireplace and sets about setting up a fire. It's only after he's done that that he hears a creak of wood. His ears prick ath the noise and he slowly gets to his feet.

Even after all this time, his left hand strays to his left shoulder, grasping for a sword hilt that wasn't there. He balls his hand into a fist and drops it to his side instead.

Whoever it was was coming into the room now. He'd be ready for them, fight or otherwise.

He hoped it would be otherwise.

What do you mean by "this?"

[Next question "what are stalchildren?" but Light wants more context fist. A single line of text doesn't illuminate much of anything.]
tapferkeit: ([serious] turn; upward gaze)

[personal profile] tapferkeit 2015-05-25 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A response. Link opens it up with a satisfied grunt. In the time it'd taken to come, he'd made a start on snow walls. He knew in his bones that it was too cold for that to stop him from freezing to death, but it was better than doing nothing. ]

Arriving in time for the safe places to shut off.

Was that here or elsewhere?

[By which he means 'home.' But invisible to the person he's speaking to, Light frowns. He doesn't have a suitable explanation for how it is that he's been kidnapped, and even less of an explanation as to why it is that 'home' is evidently not the same 'home' for everyone. He mulls over the unfamiliar word stalchildren a moment longer, then refocuses.

The problem isn't how any of this is possible; the problem is getting back and finding out exactly who was responsible for his current state of affairs. You don't make an enemy out of Kira without suffering dire consequences.
]

I'm afraid that I've never heard of 'stalchildren' before so I couldn't make any educated guesses as to which.

Elsewhere. [ He sits with his back to the snow wall, feeling a momentary relief from the utter biting cold. It won't be enough, but it's better for now. ]

Stalchildren are skeletons. Monsters. Small ones, though. They'd pop up on the fields at night, back in Hyrule.

[ Link might have never been anywhere other than Hyrule, but the vast, snowy landscape was so different to the warm, summertime fields and mountains of his home that it was obvious to him that he simply hadn't travelled to another part of it.

Even the snow in Zora's Domain hadn't been the same.
]

[A raised eyebrow. The second he reads the word 'elsewhere' is the second he decides the rest of what follows is largely irrelevant. If this doesn't apply to wherever the hell this is, its only value is in expanding Light's range of what is hypothetically plausible in this abandoned winter hellscape.

That all said, the incredulity is near impossible to suppress. Skeleton monsters are difficult enough to take seriously, but it's the specific mention of Hyrule that gets him to go from a mix of amusement and disdain to outright confusion.

Of course Light recognizes the name Hyrule. What self respecting boy who grew up owning a gamecube in Tokyo doesn't? it's for that reason alone that Light is convinced there must be a misunderstanding on his end. Video game characters are, after all, strictly fictional entities.
]

I see. You must be quite skilled in combat then.

[Flattery, perhaps. But he's curious.]

[ Skilled in combat... Link almost smiles. He remembers Navi's words - 'Don't be afraid of the Stalchild! Just attack it repeatedly!'. No, you didn't need to be a skilled fighter to take on Stalchildren. He likes to think he is one now, but back then... probably not. ]

Can't beat the cold in combat, unfortunately.

[ Which is admitting that he is good at it - not that he thought of it that way. He was simply admitting that he might have got in over his head now.

He packed his snow walls more tightly, in the fruitless hope he'd make it through the night.

Fortunately (?), the intruder is in no condition to fight, as she falls to her knees upon crossing the threshold into the room. The raggedy boots she scavenged to replace her slippers are worn thin, and her feet alternate between numbness and aching pain. As she grits her teeth and struggles to stand back up, it's obvious anyone in her position would be of no threat in the face of Link's skill and experience.

But then, even on a good day, Zelda would never be able to bring herself to fight Link.

She sees movement in her periphery and mentally scolds herself for not being more careful before she realizes hey, she recognizes that shade of green. She looks up, and freezes in a way entirely unrelated to the cold.

"Link...?"
tapferkeit: ([smile] eyes closed; n_n)

[personal profile] tapferkeit 2015-05-27 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Link didn't recognise the Princess at first. The last time he'd seen her, she'd been battle-weary but elegant. The ragged figure in front of him was a far cry for that.

But then she looked up at him, and he was pinnioned by the sharp blue gaze that he'd never forget.

In a moment, he was down on his knees in front of her, helping her to her feet. His hands, gloves still crusted with thawing snow, moved to her face to brush away any tendrils of hair that fell into it. It was even a temptation to cup her cheek to feel that she was real, because in a lonely place like this, finding one of the most important people in your life felt almost like a dream.

A smile twitched at the corner of his lips. He got to his feet, gently guiding her up with him and towards the grate. The was a chair nearby, one he'd hoped to fall into after the fire started up. Zelda looked like she needed it more, so he guided her into it. He'd happily make do with the floor.

"I'll get a fire going." His gaze lingered on her face and the wary weariness seemed to be gone from his stance. Seeing her was refreshing. Now that Zelda was here things would get better. She always new what to do.
sageprincess: (Kept secrets)

This should be impossible.

This is impossible.

His hands are as cold as everything else in this Goddess-forsaken place, but his touch is like fire as he pulls her up, so gently brushes back her hair. Zelda allows him to guide her up and towards the hearth, for all she can do is stare dumbly at the Hero she has already said her final goodbyes to.

He shouldn't be here. He shouldn't be like this. He's earned his peace, he should be enjoying it and his childhood in a time and place far away from here. Far away from her.

"You..." Her voice catches in her throat on her first attempt to speak, though with how difficult stringing together coherent thoughts is at the moment, that may be for the best. She watches Link move about with a fixed sort of awe, eventually settling on the one question that presses more heavily on her mind than any other. "... You are real?"

She's fallen to cabin fever. She's hallucinated many things. But they have never been so solid and true as the situation she's found herself in now.

With renewed vigour, Link worked at the hearth until he had a small fire flickering in the grate. The warmth spilled out into the cold room and held his hands up to the flame. Warmth was ever a pleasure here, but to have Zelda sharing it with him was beyond wonderful.

It wasn't until she spoke that he began to worry about her. Link looked over at her at the catch in her voice. Zelda has been emotional in his presence before, but she'd never seemed quite so... so uncertain before. It made him frown. Zelda had always had an answer - had the cold got to her? The cabin fever? Disorientation was all he could think of to make her act that way.

Gently, he reached out and took one of her hands in his. His fingers throbbed in the growing heat as the fire caught and spread - a good sign. The tips were raw and red. Zelda's - he hoped - were the same. No blackness, no signs of freezing.

"I'm real," he answered, putting what he was trying to convey through touch into simple words. He nodded, then closed his eyes and took a deep breath in. When he let it out, he smiled at her. Really real.

It's still so hard to believe. For so long, she convinced herself that once Ganondorf was defeated, that would be that, and it would be for the best. And yet...

Her fingers slowly, softly close around Link's, and the similarity to the moment the Ocarina was passed back to her does not go unnoticed. Her hands are cold, colder than Link's without proper gear to protect them, but she has been cautious. If nothing else, Zelda knows how to keep herself alive in a hostile environment, even if the chill from Ganondorf's curse on Zora's Domain was never this bad. He smiles, and between the fire and his hands, Zelda feels warmth and feeling gradually flow back into her.

He's real, and here, and as he was in their moment of victory. She cannot comprehend how, or why, but... as the shock begins to fade, she realizes those are, among many, many others, answers that will come in time.

(Alongside this, the idea that Link is, in fact, one of the most qualified people to seek out those answers comes to mind, but she quickly pushes that thought away. Link deserves peace now.)

Her brow creases with concern, and after another moment, she asks, "Have you been here long?"
tapferkeit: (pic#7250674)

[personal profile] tapferkeit 2015-05-30 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
In answer to her question, he raised his shoulders in a shrug. The days blended together in this snowy wasteland. The sun went up, he set out. The sun went down, he looked for shelter and warmth. That was all there had been to it. Keeping track of days had seemed unimportant to him since his seven year sleep.

(Two years from now, when he was older yet apparently younger, he would begin to track the minutia of time and understand how every minute counted.)

"A while, I think."

Long enough for him to know that Ganondorf's defeat had been some time ago. Not long enough for him to know when exactly.

Tilting his head, he raised his brows at her. And you?
sageprincess: (Plaguing uncertainty)

[personal profile] sageprincess 2015-05-30 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Her lack of response is an answer in and of itself. Not for a lack of knowing - the passage of time has held more meaning for her than it has for him - but to define it in words gives it a finality she's not quite ready to accept yet. To be so far away from Hyrule, her people, all that she has fought for to reclaim...

These thoughts stay locked up in her mind. Instead, she focuses on Link, her displeasure with his answer evident in her eyes. With her free hand, she reaches out, that dutiful little voice in the back of her head saying stop, keep your distance, you'll just end up hurting him more-- but this place is terribly lonely, even for one such as she who has spent years growing accustomed to being on her own. With strange people and stranger technology, she finds herself wanting to cling to the familiar.

She settles for brushing the melting snow off of Link's hat.

"Have you been well?" As well as anyone can be, here.
tapferkeit: (Default)

[personal profile] tapferkeit 2015-05-30 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
For a moment he expected Navi to fly out of his hat at that touch. Even after all these same, muddled days alone, he still expected her to appear. He closed his eyes in a minute show of pain at her loss. He kept hoping to find her in the snowy fields as he traversed them.

Maybe now that Zelda was here, others would come. He could hope for that. She would be too small to use the network and tablets, wouldn't she...?

He opened his eyes and gave Zelda a small nod. I've been fine. Surviving, mostly. Going from place to place and trying to find the point of it all.

He'd died, once.

Lost his sense of touch for a while.

She didn't need to know that.

"You?"
sageprincess: (Dutiful atonement)

[personal profile] sageprincess 2015-05-30 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
She retracts her hand as though it's been burned when Link closes his eyes. Not the intended reaction, certainly. She chastises herself - you should have known better - and lets her hand fall back into her lap.

"There is still kindness to be found here," she replies, another non-answer. No need to explain how her own cautious tendencies ended up driving her mad temporarily. "Everyone is wary, but I have been fortunate to find those still willing to share their shelter, or talk, despite these conditions."

Or because of them. Either way.
tapferkeit: (pic#8421720)

[personal profile] tapferkeit 2015-05-30 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[ He raised his head when she took her hand away, but instead of wondering at it, he accepted it as part of her touch. All the same, he missed it. It had been warm - not in temperature, her hands were too cold still - and he had enjoyed the contact.

It didn't mark an end to the closeness between them, however, and he settled himself back on his rump, leaning one arm on his raised knee. It was a more relaxed pose than he'd had in recent days.

Days at least.

"I've met some people too," he offered. Some of them had wanted to hang behind, some had wanted to explore in another direction. They'd been good comrades for the time he'd had them, however. "Swaped items with them."
sageprincess: (Heavenly lights)

[personal profile] sageprincess 2015-05-31 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That earns a smile, small and slight, but fond and there.

"That sounds like you."

It's difficult to get Zelda to relax completely. Too many years spent watching over her shoulder have left her with a tenseness in her muscles that never quite goes away, and Norfinbury hasn't done much to discourage such habits. But between the fire and Link's company, as impossible as it might be, she finds herself sagging into her chair, just a bit.

"Are you well stocked on supplies?"
tapferkeit: (Default)

I'm very sorry for my formatting there! Should have double checked.

[personal profile] tapferkeit 2015-05-31 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They were both victims of war. Tenseness even when they relaxed was understanable. Link noticed the way her shoulders sagged and her limbs loosened, however, and was glad that he could offer enough of a safe place that she would unwind that much.

In answer, he glanced over his shoulder at his pack. It had... some supplies in it. Not too many. Enough to get him by. What he really wanted was a quiver and a bow, but his attempts at making them were slow at best.

Turning back, he raised his hand with his palm facing the floor and shook it from side to side. Enough. The look of resignation on his face would let her know that he'd like more, but he'd make do.
sageprincess: (Standing before)

it happens, no worries

[personal profile] sageprincess 2015-05-31 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that won't do at all. With a short frown, Zelda turns to shift her pack off her back and into her lap. Obviously, given the state of her hands and feet, she has not been fortunate enough to find adequate clothing for this kind of weather, but she's had a little more luck coming across bits and pieces of food. After a moment of digging, she produces something like a granola bar, wrapped up in plastic.

"Here. It is not like anything to be found in Hyrule, but it is edible once you have removed the wrapping, at least."

Hardly a full meal, but every little bit helps, right? She knows how to make her rations last, anyway.
tapferkeit: ([smile] dohohoho - up to shenanigans)

[personal profile] tapferkeit 2015-06-03 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There was only a slight pause before Link took the bar and opened it. Diplomatically, he split it down the middle and handed Zelda a half. The second one he popped into his mouth immediately. Wandering from temple to temple and fighting off monsters in the fields made Link aware that you ate what you could when you could, and that you were glad to get it. This place had only cemented that feeling.

"Thanks," he says, around a mouthful of granola. He even smiles.

Table manners were a little lacking in the forest, after all.
