POWER RE/GAIN MEME
hey it's been like a million years since we did the

POWER RE/GAIN MEME
BONUS HORRIBLE:
haha wouldn't it be terrible if your character got their powers while also re/experiencing the effects of a previous event like noisy black or no light? Haha yeah that'd be the worst huh

[His voice is quiet, unsure. He's so uncomfortable.
This is where he should break out his snark that usually comes with meeting an obvious supervillain but this is also Gabriel.]
I don't remember not having it. It's... it's not a power, really, I don't think? Just making connections.
/cruises in a month later :P
Huh, really? That's how I'd describe my ability, with a focus on complex mechanisms. I figure out how they work, and I learn extremely quickly.
[ It's a little bit of the mildly-curious old Gabriel peeking through. But the muscles around his eyes are still too tight, as if he's holding something in at all times. He freezes in place as he thinks. ]
Have you ever had any subjects you have a hard time with? Have you ever had a problem with your appetite for learning? It might even be an adapted version of what I have. I never asked if there were people in your world with abilities- any special people with powers beyond the norm?
y halo thar :D
[Flynn shakes his head.]
There aren't. It's not a superhero world.
[Except... except there is Judson who can magically show up in mirrors and screens to talk to him on his missions. Except there are vampires. Except magic is real.]
There's magic, but... humans are just humans.

If I could go to college, I wonder...
[ He looks back at the screen, sharp eyes on Flynn. ]
If there's magic, there might be other things. Or maybe you have some sort of adapted 'magic' ability that emulates what I've got. I've never been interested in computers, either. It's more abstract and I prefer practical applications.
--do you think we could meet? I'd be able to tell if there is something there, something unique.
no subject
[Yeah, about that.]
That sounds great, really, in some bizarre parallel universe where I actually like to die and get cut to pieces?
Here's the thing, I can tell that you got your powers back. Which I'm sure is doing wonders for your mood and self-esteem but I also kind of remember you telling me how you used to pick people's brains apart in a very literal sense and I just so happen to like mine very much, do you-- do you see my dilemma here?
no subject
[ He looks away from the camera. ]
It's just that- if your power really is similar to mine, and you really don't have the Hunger along with it, I could figure out how to shut mine down. Maybe I could stop being a danger to- well, everyone.
[ He seems tense, and takes a moment to let out a long, steadying breath before looking back at the camera. He seems sincere, but there's still a tightness to his expression that didn't used to be there. ]
Maybe we can talk it out, over the tablets? Figure it out that way? How much do you know about neuroscience?
no subject
On the other hand, brain picking.
But if there's a chance to fix this, to try and stop the danger he's posing to the town – how can he not? He's the Librarian.]
... Fine. Right, yes, we can do that.
[Why does it feel like a really stupid idea?]
I read a couple of books on it but I wouldn't call it my strong suit.

Okay, so- in my world, genetic changes cause mutations that are mostly present in the brain. Small, miniscule changes like this can either cause brain tumors or give someone a special ability. The examples I usually give- telekinesis, enhanced hearing, that sort of thing- they are all a single structural change. But in people like me and a couple others- and you, if I'm right- there are subtle adaptive changes through the whole brain, starting with a widening of the ventricles, and continuing with strengthened and slightly modified cranial nerves, a more efficient structure in the thalamus, things like that.
But usually the strengthening in one structure leads to a weakening in another. Either the structural change shifts around other parts of the brain in deleterious ways or the use of a slightly different type of tissue causes information of a certain type to have a harder time being passed on. So- in general, there's usually a downside to whatever we can do. Mine is my impulse control, so that's probably the prefrontal cortex. Not exactly looking for a lobotomy right now, though.
Have you ever looked over an MRI of your brain? I know asking that's a long shot, but if so, I can work with any abnormal parts you might've seen.

In my world abilities like telekinesis are covered by magic. And it's not... science. Of course we have science, too, but magic is really that. Archaic rituals, artifacts, the Spear of Destiny, Excalibur, the Holy Grail.
[He rubs the top of his head, leaning back, revealing more of his surroundings; one of the larger, more luxurious houses in the Industrial Zone.]
But I was smart before I learned about magic. And I'm not abnormal.
[He scowls at that but he looks away, too. It's not like he's never been called freak before.]
I'm just... smart. In my world, we don't do MRIs for that.
no subject
Yeah. I know, not really in mine, either. I just thought maybe I'd get lucky and you'd have seen it.
[ He lets out a small sigh. ]
'cause if I can even guess at what the difference is, I can make the change in my own structure with telekinesis. My aptitude immediately picks up on how my brain's supposed to be, then it'll shift to make it work exactly the way it should. But I need an example to go off of.
Is the magic in your world all mysterious runes and stuff that can't really be known by mankind? Or is it more of the 'Harry Potter' type, where there's rules and structure? I definitely like the second kind better.
[ Y'know, personally. Probably because he'd have a chance at learning it. ]
no subject
You... want to use telekinesis on your own brain? That sounds very dangerous. And impossible?
[And weird. Then again, so does a lot of magic he faces on a daily basis so it's just a short moment of irritation before he accepts it with a bewildered shrug.]
Uh, both. Some stuff has rules, yeah, but I don't know much about it. I just started learning about a lot of things when I was, you know. Brought here. But now that we have our powers back maybe there's a chance of going back...
no subject
[ He does enjoy theorizing, especially about special abilities. ]
That's a good point, though- did anyone have a teleporting or mobility ability? I didn't think so, but then again, I've been actively trying not to keep a tally.
[ He gives Flynn a wan smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. ]
no subject
[And if they could actually fix him, the rest of the town would be safer from it...]
The vampires could sort of teleport. But then again, they were vampires.
[A shrug. Magic is complicated and it doesn't help that his mentor/supervisor keeps everything really mysterious and vague.]
The only time I've seen supernatural abilities in humans was when they stole artifacts and empowered themselves by its magic. Nothing innate.
