Network Prompts
ONE: IT WON'T BE LONG NOW... Well, you made a mistake. You spent too long searching around, or you ran outside near the end of the day for just one more thing, and now you've been locked out. You can search around all you want, but the best shelter you can hope for is pressing against the side of a sealed up building. You do still have your tablet, though. Maybe someone on the network can give you some advice, or at least some comfort while you wait for hypothermia to set in.
TWO: CABIN FEVER Maybe you didn't want that mistake of getting caught outside to happen again, but now you've ended up staying too long in one location, and cabin fever has set in. Maybe you're taking to the network to try and ignore the hallucinations. Maybe you want to tell everyone that you've figured out they're all in on your kidnapping. Maybe you ended up wandering off and now you'd really like to know if anyone can check back in the place you were at for your pants.
Action Prompts
THREE: AN UNEXPECTED MEETING You're going about your business searching what seems like it might be an especially promising house--it's fully intact and there's even a working fireplace with some wood! It looks like someone else has the same idea, though, and you've run into them in the middle of your search. Do you share the potential wealth or try to kick them out? On the other hand, maybe you know who this is, or maybe you're just glad to actually see another person for the first time in ages.
FOUR: GOOD MORGUE-NING You've just woken up in a morgue after dying in one unfortunate way or another. You have no idea where you are beyond that, but your tablet is insisting you can't stay here, so you should probably get out of here pretty quickly. Of course, bringing people back from the dead isn't a perfect science, so you're missing something important to you. Maybe you've lost your voice, maybe you can't remember where you're from, maybe you can't remember where you are right now. It looks like someone else is nearby, though. Maybe they can help you out?
[Her tone reflects that she's not dismissing his words, merely trying to add levity to a situation that has her a little off-centre. Even in 'accidentally' letting her hand linger over his until he moves to collect the chairs, she's only gone so far towards accepting that this really is truth.
But she can't dwell on it and so she tries to joke over it until her thoughts can settle. In the meantime, as Zack starts to move the seats, she heads further into the cabin to see what might be on hand for them. She's not sure she's expecting to find much of any use but anything will do, especially as she's yet to find anything that quite works as a permanent weapon.
Of course, there's something a little more to her next tease but it's easily glossed over, enough for her to say it.]
At least if we have to share a bed, I already know you.
[ There's a hint of a weak laugh at that. In the past, there'd be a confidence. A slick smile to go with a boast. But with every monster he's run into, that's all but been a continuous reminder. He can't fight them. And that makes all the difference.
But... he knows dwelling on that won't do them any good. So, he'll take that cue. Move on. Do what he can do. And part of what he can do is drop that chair in front of the door. Then go for the next one while Cissnei leaves him to that work. In a way, it reminds him again of those days from years ago. Those times they'd occasionally worked side by side. And it feels... strange. Not a bad strange. Just perhaps... a bit nostalgic. Old times.
Thunk goes the next chair suddenly as he hears that tease from across the cabin and he muses half jokingly, half awkwardly: ] Yeah, I guess it could be worse. [ ...Seriously though, it could be. Have you met @hotstud_xxx? He'll take to sleeping in the same bed as Cissnei any day over him. Although somewhat stiffly, he adds... ] Then again, I kinda was on the run from you and the other Turks...
No, you weren't. We were the only ones you weren't running from.
[Her words are out before she can stop them, a rare bald honesty that Cissnei regrets before she's even done speaking. She can't blame him for not knowing, when they'd been too late to find him, but the memory of their desperate search to find him before the rest of Shinra could is just a little too raw for her not to react, no matter how much she keeps her feelings under wraps otherwise.
Then again, Zack always has had a knack for seeing more of her than most other people would.
She shakes her head, then, pacing away as she tries to fathom other options. No point in making him any more uncomfortable than she might already have.]
Sorry. I know you never had any way to know that. I just thought...even if you couldn't trust the rest...
[She trails off, fighting back the slight hurt in her voice. For all she'd done to protect Zack, it stings to think he would still consider her as untrustworthy as any of the others even if she can understand it.]
[ That... gets him to pause midstride in the middle of going for the end table he was after. He stops... and he stays there. Shifts his weight from one foot. And then back to the other. Then he's lowering his head and letting out a slow breath. ] Even if I had believed you and turned myself in to the Turks, I mean... What would you have done? After what happened, we would'a been stuck anyway.
[ He really doubts they would have just let him and Cloud do whatever considering both what they'd known and how they'd been classified as "escaped research samples". They would have had to be kept under wraps. House arrest for the rest of his life? Yeah, uh. About that? Simply put? He shakes his head... ]
And that's not an offer I'd be willing to to accept. [ When he finally meets her gaze again, there's a teetering mix of something between determination and apology. ] ...Still owe you one for the interception in Gongaga though. [ Her other favors, too. He hasn't forgotten. It just... It's still raw for him, too. ]
We would have found a way. Tseng would have found a way.
[Even if the letters had been the catalyst, Cissnei knows Tseng wouldn't have sent his Turks out on the mission he had unless he'd thought about the next steps, the way forward once Zack and Cloud had been safely in Turk custody. Tseng isn't the type to act on impulse, she knows that, and she has faith enough in him to trust that things would have worked out somehow.
But it's understandable Zack doesn't see it that way. She knows it is, knows that Shinra as a corporation overshadows the wills and intentions of the individual departments and especially from the perspective of someone so readily cast out by the company.
By the executives. But she doubts he wants to hear about the Turks' troubles now.
She shakes her head, turning back to the search in a clumsy move towards moving past the conversation. She shouldn't have snapped, shouldn't have let the façade slip, and there's no sense in making things any more awkward.]
It's fine. I'm sure it won't come to that, anyway.
[Even with half the chairs she's seen so far used as a barricade, she's sure there must be a sofa or chair or something she can curl up on; she's only small, after all, and she's suffered much worse discomfort in her time.]
I KNOW RIGHT. ;; Fuuuh.... And I am so late, but this should do it.
[ He can't deny that Tseng's good at what he does. He wouldn't have asked him to look after Aerith otherwise. And Cissnei, too. Just look how many times she tracked him down while he'd been on the run? But at the end of the day... Even Zack can see the big ripple- no, tsunami wave -that was made the day Sephiroth cracked. And part of damage control includes the removal of witnesses. That had included he and the cadet. Because whether or not they actually chose to talk, it was the very idea that if they had talked, ShinRa's reputation would be in shambles. And that wasn't a risk they would be willing to take... No, nothing good would come of things either way.
So, even with that reassurance from Cissnei, Zack just... shakes his head as he finally picks up that end table. ] It's not like they have any influence over here anyway... do they? [ ...Yes, he just seriously asked. But really, he had been wondering for over a month now. It's part of why he'd been so careful giving out information on the network. Even still, while he lets his words hang in the air, he's taking that end table over to drop in front of the door, too.
At least he left the couch alone this time. Cissnei might be in luck of a quasi-bed that night. The other pieces of furniture are better built than he expected- heavier. ]
If they do, they've got a funny way of showing it.
[Truthfully, it isn't something Cissnei had really thought about - everything had seemed too run down to be anywhere with Shinra's influence and she hasn't been able to make contact with any of the other Turks, which would speak to there being no need to think about it.
She's thinking about it now, though, and a flicker of it reflects in her expression. What if someone found out? What if this is some form of punishment, to have Turks cast out just as they might cast out any other considered to be a traitor...but no. That makes no sense. If this is the wake of her death, she feels she should know it and all the reports she's heard made clear enough that Zack's couldn't possibly have been faked.
She shakes her head, tries to shake off the thoughts with it. Whatever's going on here, she feels like she should know if Shinra has any involvement.
The cupboards provide a fine enough distraction. Even as most of them appear to have been picked clean, there might be something worth taking and even if not, it lets her put a line under a rather awkward conversation, for all she's not quite sure how to push forward from there.]
Fair enough. [ Despite the pun, the smile that usually comes with fails to appear. But the tension in his shoulders does seem to ebb away at that thought. He and Cissnei might have been on opposite playing fields to a point back on Gaia, but if there's one thing he hasn't forgotten, it's that she had gone out of her way to steer things to his advantage. She's not going to lie to him now.
So, he had been overtly paranoid about things. ShinRa wasn't involved there. Which... since the mention of dates and places, you'd think that would have eased his mind already. But who's to say those things were true? Hearing it from someone he knows makes a difference.
For the time being, he follows along now sweeping the house. The cabinets are bare bones as usual, but he does find- ] Oh yeah! [ Guess who's holding up a small bag of jerky? He is. And already using his peeling knife to cut it open shortly thereafter. He digs through the bag and takes a piece out, but he doesn't pop it in his mouth. No, he's holding it out to Cissnei with a small quirk to his mouth. ] Here.
[At least he seems to believe her. That's good enough for now, and she figures they can figure out the rest in time.
Now she's found him, it's safe to say she's in no hurry at all to leave him any time soon. Being around other people at all is a bonus, that it's Zack makes it all the better - and even if he doesn't trust her, she trusts him well enough to think it to be worthwhile to explore together for a while.
Not that there's much she can do if he insists on leaving her behind. But she hopes it won't come to that.
When all she's finding are scraps of what were once food wrappers, Zack's find is a spot of hope she's not at all sorry for. Even so, there's a certain caution in how she takes the jerky from him, as though having to convince herself it's okay for her to take it.]
Thanks. I find anything useful, I'll be sure to return the favour.
[She doesn't like owing anyone anything, even someone she knows is unlikely to hold it over her.]
[ Being around people, even for all the hell that a place like this throws at him, that's definitely one thing that he's been so thankful for. Not that he had necessarily been alone back home, but... Cloud hadn't exactly been talkative at that point. So, even with the rough edges, even with the divide, her company's still something to be thankful for.
That doesn't mean he doesn't notice her own caution between them. But when he speaks, it's with a nod and a sliver of a smile. ]
Don't worry about it. [ He literally waves it away while he reaches in to grab a piece for himself. While he stuffs it into his mouth, he swings his pack around onto the nearby counter and starts to dig through it, shuffling to take out another ration bar. He pauses only briefly at one point and that's to pull out some familiar keys and twirl them around his finger without looking up. ] I think we're even.
[The pack Zack has and the fact he has to rummage a little to find what he's looking for suggests to Cissnei he's been here for a while, and she's glad to at least notice that he seems to have been doing okay for himself. For a given definition, at least.
And despite everything, despite their grim surroundings and the grim history sitting as unsteady ground between them, she can't help but smile as he pulls out those keys. She doesn't know why he has them, doubts utterly that what they belong to is here too, but she gets the message in them all the same.]
Please. I was just helping a friend who was in a difficult spot. You really don't have to pay me back for that.
[They were even to start with, as far as she's concerned, especially with the Turks failing in their ultimate aim to help out.
She grants him a more uncertain look, then, as she broaches a possibly touchy subject with as much humour as she can muster.]
Besides. If I still need to pay you back then I can't really leave you behind until I do.
