TEST DRIVE MEME

If you'd like to apply to Snowblind and would like to test the waters first or get a sample set up for your application, this meme is for you! We've even provided some prompts for you to use if you want (but feel free to make up your own). Here's how it works.
✭ Reply to this entry with a character you're considering apping into the game. You can include the name of your character and the fandom in your subject line.
✭ Comment around to others on the meme, whether you're in the game already or not.
✭ Now you have a sample ready for your application!
✭ So go reserve and apply when reservations and applications are open.
✭ Seriously, do it.

Network Prompts
ONE: IT WON'T BE LONG NOW...
Well, you made a mistake. You spent too long searching around, or you ran outside near the end of the day for just one more thing, and now you've been locked out. You can search around all you want, but the best shelter you can hope for is pressing against the side of a sealed up building. You do still have your tablet, though. Maybe someone on the network can give you some advice, or at least some comfort while you wait for hypothermia to set in.

TWO: CABIN FEVER
Maybe you didn't want that mistake of getting caught outside to happen again, but now you've ended up staying too long in one location, and cabin fever has set in. Maybe you're taking to the network to try and ignore the hallucinations. Maybe you want to tell everyone that you've figured out they're all in on your kidnapping. Maybe you ended up wandering off and now you'd really like to know if anyone can check back in the place you were at for your pants.

Action Prompts
THREE: AN UNEXPECTED MEETING
You're going about your business searching what seems like it might be an especially promising house--it's fully intact and there's even a working fireplace with some wood! It looks like someone else has the same idea, though, and you've run into them in the middle of your search. Do you share the potential wealth or try to kick them out? On the other hand, maybe you know who this is, or maybe you're just glad to actually see another person for the first time in ages.

FOUR: GOOD MORGUE-NING
You've just woken up in a morgue after dying in one unfortunate way or another. You have no idea where you are beyond that, but your tablet is insisting you can't stay here, so you should probably get out of here pretty quickly. Of course, bringing people back from the dead isn't a perfect science, so you're missing something important to you. Maybe you've lost your voice, maybe you can't remember where you're from, maybe you can't remember where you are right now. It looks like someone else is nearby, though. Maybe they can help you out?

I wish I knew, buddy. If anybody figures it out, I'll let you know.

It might not matter anyway.

[That might sound pessimistic, but death is a part of life in the train. Outside the train? Everything's extinct, so this may look like self-pity, but it's not, for what it's worth.]
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-22 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve tips his head back against the wall and closes his eyes for a long minute, swallowing around the ache in his throat.]

Maybe not.

But you *do* matter. Whatever happens, I'm here with you, OK? I'm not going to leave you alone.

Things could still turn out all right.
silenttrainbaby: (blood or bliss)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-22 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[Grey runs his finger over the words that show up on the screen. Clearly, this man - Steve - was never in the back of the train. Hope is a scarce commodity there as is consolation.]

What is it like in your world?
starsandtights: (Default)

i am having a lot of feelings about this thread

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-22 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve has to think for a moment. How to encompass an entire world? How to explain a world to someone who's never seen it, someone who's grown up in a completely different kind of reality?]

Not extinct. Alive. Plants and animals and billions of people. Not everything is good... there's a lot of bad, a lot that needs fixing, but there's a lot of good, too.

There are trains, lots of trains, but we don't live in them, we just use them to go from place to place. People live in buildings, like here in Norfinbury, but usually not broken like these are. Sometimes the buildings are much taller, towering into the sky, like mountains, tall as a train is long.

Some places are cold like this some of the time, but it doesn't last, and people usually have shelter inside of the buildings, where it's warm and bright. After a few months the cold goes away and everything is warm and green.
silenttrainbaby: (looking to Gilliam)

:D

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-22 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[once again, tracing his finger over the words, Grey tries - and fails - to imagine such a place. Those few moments when he could look out a window, he saw buildings and things like that, but they had been snow-covered and desolate. The only green he knows is what he saw further up in the train. He saw a tree in the garden car and the leaves were so green as to make his chest hurt.

The train is very long so he cannot imagine a building that tall. Or not living on the train.]

What are animals like?
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-22 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve struggles with this one as well. How do you explain 'animals' to someone who's never seen them? Like describing colors to the blind; impossible. But Steve owes it to Grey to try.]

Animals are like people in some ways. They're alive, they have heartbeats and they breathe and many of them are warm to the touch, they're born and they live and eat and have children and die, like us. They see and hear and smell and taste and feel, like us.

But animals come in all different shapes and sizes and colors. Some have four legs, or six legs, or eight legs, or none. Some have hair like we do, but all over their bodies; it's called 'fur'. Some have feathers, which is soft like fur, but comes in many beautiful colors—red and blue and green and purple and orange and yellow. Some have scales, which is like skin but harder and rougher. Some animals fly in the air, others live their whole lives in water and never drown. Some are as big as buildings, and some are so small you can barely see them. There are millions of different kinds.

and then came the formatting fail

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-22 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[What marvels Steve is describing. So much that Grey, with his tiny world view can only hope to one day see, even if it is pictures from books that aren't extinct.

Flying? Fur? Millions of them? It's beyond Grey's scope]

Whats your favorite animal?
starsandtights: (Default)

yeah i ditched the top of the thread a long time ago, it was getting too cramped at the bottom

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-22 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hard for me to choose, but... elephants, I think. We had elephants at the zoo when I was a kid. Elephants have four legs and gray skin, and they're very big. The big ones are, I dunno, maybe twice as tall as an adult person? Maybe half again as long as they are tall. They have big floppy ears, and their noses are long, like a hose or a rope, hanging all the way down to the ground... that kind of nose is called a 'trunk', and they're very flexible, they can use their trunk to grab things or pick things up. And they have these two big things called tusks poking out of their mouths, like teeth that just kept growing, as long as your arm.

I think I always liked elephants because they're so gentle even though they're so large, and they're smart, almost like people. You can look into their eyes and see that they *feel* things, that they're looking back at you.
silenttrainbaby: (blood or bliss)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-22 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
[With such a description, how can Grey not wish to see an elephant? Even just in a picture.

He suddenly feels very lonely; he shivers hard and pulls his knees closer to his chest.]

There were fish on the train
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-22 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve smiles a little.]

Yeah? What were the fish like?
silenttrainbaby: (what?!)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-22 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Over our heads and all around us.
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-22 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Aaaaaaaand Steve is confused again.]

We're talking about the same kind of fish, right? Smooth, maybe kinda shiny, lives in water? No arms or legs... fins, instead? Flat flappy things that kinda stick out from the body?

...Were you in the water?
silenttrainbaby: (what?!)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-22 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[Welcome to Grey's world, Steve. It's cold, desolate and results in everyone ever dying. This is the best way Grey knows to describe the car they were passing through.]

The train car had them over our heads. They were shiny and floated in the water
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-22 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve thinks about this.]

'Shiny and floating in the water' sounds like fish all right. Was the water behind glass?

...Do you know about glass? Hard, smooth, and see-through? Maybe your train had windows?
silenttrainbaby: (tattoos)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-23 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[It has windows, yes, but the fish weren't in windows. That would be strange, Steve.]

They were in glass over our heads. Then we had sooshee.

[a twice-a-year thing, according to Mason. They were "lucky" to have it. Lucky. Ha.]
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-23 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, yeah, I've been to an aquarium where the fish were displayed that way. That's a neat way to see them!

...Sushi? Raw fish? I've had that. What did you think of it?
silenttrainbaby: (looking to Gilliam)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-23 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
[Considering that Grey had lived on ground up bugs in bar form for all of his life, this will seem like a strange answer.]

it tasted weird
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-23 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, yeah, it's a bit different. I kinda like it, though.
silenttrainbaby: (tattoos)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-23 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like to see an elephant
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-23 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve stares at that one for a long time, then has to wipe his eyes. Shut up, he's not crying, YOU'RE crying.]

Yeah. Bet you would.

[Steve has an idea.]

Hold up.

[A few minutes pass.]

Best I could do.

[Included with this message is an attachment: a photo of Steve attempting a convincing smile, holding up a yellowed piece of paper, upon which is a pretty decent pencil-sketch of an elephant, with a rough outline of a human, for scale.]
silenttrainbaby: (blood or bliss)

[personal profile] silenttrainbaby 2015-10-23 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
[No, Steve, it's you crying, fyi. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It takes Grey a long time to figure out how to look at the picture, how to open the attachment.

When he does, he blinks in surprise. He's used to looking at Painter's drawings, not at something so convincing as this.

Then he's caught, because Steve looks nearly identical to Curtis but for a lot of factors: cleanliness, no beard and the smile. Curtis never smiled, ever.

It's enough to have him take a long time before he looks at the picture. Painter's definitely a better artist that Steve is, but he gets the idea.

He doesn't know what to say, so he just types:]

Thank you
starsandtights: (Default)

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve doesn't really know what to say either.]

You're welcome, Grey.

I think I'm going to stop writing now. My hands hurt.
starsandtights: (Default)

video

[personal profile] starsandtights 2015-10-23 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Steve swallows. Yeah, first the hands hurt, then they go numb, then everything goes numb.

He hesitates, then switches his tablet to video.]

"Hey there. Maybe this would be better?"
