Network Prompts
ONE: BUMP IN THE NIGHT It's dark out, and congratulations - you're inside! What's not inside, you might ask? Monsters. Shadowy monsters that have surrounded whatever house you've taken shelter in. They can't get in... or can they? From time to time, the doors and the walls creak as if under an unbearable pressure.
Who can sleep when it's like this? Maybe you should take to the network to find a distraction. Or maybe someone has advice for getting rid of those things.
TWO: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD We mourn the loss of those who have died in the time between the last announcement and this one:
...is that your name on that list? It might be. Maybe you should let the others know you're not actually dead. Or, you know, if you happen to spot the name of someone you know and love on there, it might be time to ask around and see if anyone knows what happened to your dearly departed...
Action Prompts
THREE: KYRIE ELEISON You've found yourself in a small chapel, complete with bolted-down pews, an altar devoid of symbols, and stained glass windows depicting various saints. It's quiet... one might even say dead quiet. Which is a really awful pun to be making, considering if you follow the stairs down to the basement you'll find a morgue.
Explore to your heart's content, but you'll be forced out at 7 PM. Hopefully you don't find any unfortunately familiar faces among the dead.
FOUR: LIGHTS OUT Against all odds, you've managed to make it to shelter for the night. You pull the door shut behind you and turn to look at your surroundings - and that's when you see it. A ... person. Is it a person? It's hard to tell, because a moment later, you're plunged into darkness.
...better hope that's another unfortunate visitor to Norfinbury you've been locked in with, and not something more threatening.
ONE - text from @viagosphone So, like, I like to think I'm a pretty cool guy. I've got the texting and the things down. How do we talk to the guys outside? The whole hissing and chasing thing? That's all right.
[It's not all right, but Viago is coping. Barely. There's a reason this is a text. He hasn't been human in over 300 years and he doesn't like it.]
Aren't they supposed to go away after you get inside, though? It's getting really, really annoying when I can't sleep during the day or the night. And I don't mean to, like, harsh their groove, but that's just rude, ja?
[ The voice that graces the network today is new, distinctly flippant, and a little annoying. ]
Many of you seem strangely surprised that terrible things are happening. "Oh, I've been trapped in a dark and desolate wasteland? Surely it will be all cuddling kittens and baking cookies." It's right there in the name. Norfinbury. [ A snicker, then a pause. ] No? Tough crowd.
Though I'm finding it difficult to quake in my boots when our enemies can be defeated by a door. I have a feeling I haven't heard the whole story yet. If anyone's feeling talkative, I'll listen. I do ask that you embellish the boring parts, though — and do the voices. I've been spoiled for stories.
Oh, they can't be defeated by a door! Just stopped. Assuming they're not the kind that tries to squidge their way through the cracks.
...Mmh, but I suppose nobody actually tried to hit one with a door yet. I suppose if you trapped one half in, half out of the door at lockdown you might kill it? Or... or they might just be able to survive like that. Erm.
Uh, sorry, where was I going with this...? Darnit.
It's the middle of the night, the neighbors are throwing a party, and I didn't get an invitation. Does anyone know how to put together a spray bottle? Who to call with a noise complaint?
Or better yet, a distraction.
[Three's tone is dry. Normally he'd just clean his guns and wait for morning but they're not here. He misses them. Especially Bubba.]
Four
"I saw you," three announced himself, in case that was unclear. Getting stabbed in the middle of the night was not on his to-do list. "I'll stay over here if you stay over there."
[ Even if it wouldn't be of much use, Jade really wishes she had her old hunting rifle. It would quell the feeling that somehow Grandpa knows she's wandering around unarmed, and who doesn't feel more at ease with an instrument of death in their hands?
...Wow, those monsters are getting kinda loud. ]
hey uh can those shadowy things get inside a house?? theres a lot of them making a ruckus outside :\
[ You've been spared from her usual obscenely bright text. For now. ]
"Vell, vhere is 'over zere'?" The thick, German accent sounds just a little huffy. It's dark and normally that wouldn't be a problem, but Viago's night vision has disappeared along with... everything else that makes unlife easier. "I need to find a place to lie down. I'm not going to on ze floor if I don't have to. Zere vas a bed over near you, I think. Feel around, ja?"
The creatures do ordinarily leave before the doors unlock in the morning. Until then, you may have to content yourself with the fact that their 'groove' does not, for the moment, include swallowing you whole. Sometimes it's the little things.
Little things, sure, sure! That's cool. That's great! But no one talks to them? I tried yelling a little when he was chasing me. You know? "Hi! I'm Viago! Please stop! No, like really!" They're worse than werewolves.
[A pause. Right. He's supposed to be keeping things on the down low. Especially when he can't even try to hypnotize anyone here.]
Let me guess; you'll be here all week. [ Hi, flippant; meet apathetic. It takes effort to sound this dry, but her tone lacks any real bite. While she's pretty used to terrible things happening, and easily put off by the more inexperienced people here, she'll never pass up an opportunity to be contrary. ]
There's not much to tell. [ She leans back to sigh, the sound muted but still picked up by the microphone. ] We're here, and we're not going anywhere anytime soon. [ And she'd just love to hear him tell her otherwise. In dark and trying times, Jane can always be counted on to keep hope alive. ]
Oh, and if you hole up in one place too long, you lose it. Hallucinate. Takes about a week to happen. [ It hasn't happened to her, but she's seen it, and she could really do without another entry made to the community that looks or sounds or reads like it's from a found-footage horror. Shit's bad enough. ]
[ A glimpse of the building's interior, and what looked like someone standing further into the room, is all Jane got before the house's door sealed behind her and the room went black. Familiar adrenaline spikes, and she wastes no time swinging her backpack around, tearing aside the front pocket's zipper to get at her tablet. Though her fingers are numbed with cold and clumsy, she moves like someone used to making every second count, desperate but not unpracticed. The backpack drops to the floor beside her once she has the tablet in her hands.
For a blinding instant, her face is the only thing illuminated while she paws at the screen, expression a hard mask working furiously to tamp down the knot fear is beating into her throat. Then, her photo app boots, and the camera's flash casts its beam. She points it straight ahead, keeping her back to the door. ]
[Garrett instinctively slips behind her when he sees her face light up. Normally, he thinks, he'd knock her out and rid himself of this nuisance but, really, what would the point be? There's no reason to hide from people here.
Well, no reason other than it being fun.
He leans against the wall by the door and folds his arms over his chest.]
"What wrong with the floor? The beds in this place probably all have mold and mildew." Three felt around and barked his shin on something he hoped was wood. "God damn it.
I believe attempts at communication have been made. And quickly abandoned in favour of running for one's dear life. Perhaps they cannot understand us. And then perhaps they don't give a damn.
[But, more importantly, his strangeness sense is tingling at this werewolves comment. Because how do those even figure into this?]
And I can confirm that they are, indeed, "worse than werewolves". Lupines can at least be struck back at. Don't try that here.
Yes, perhaps they just enjoy looking in through the windows and twitching harmlessly, and this is all one big comical misunderstanding. I'm thinking of inviting them in for tea, but I only have enough for one.
[ Well, hello, apathetic. Poor reception to his humor has never stopped Hawke before, and it certainly won't now. He might be the only one laughing, but that's because his jokes are an acquired taste. Probably. ]
I take it these aren't the fun sort of hallucinations.
[ He suspects they're less rainbows and smiles and more... gory. ]
Well, it can't be any worse than Kirkwall. [ A pause. ] You'd be laughing at that if you were from Kirkwall, trust me.
[ She can't help the little snicker at Norfinbury. Jade is a goofball regardless of circumstances. ]
It's proooobably not the doors themselves. Maybe they get the same feeling we do when we're in the school at lockdown-- well, not the exact same feeling, but a similar compulsion? I mean, a typical house probably wouldn't give a horde of monsters much trouble!
[ Her friends' houses certainly weren't obstacles to the imps. Why yes, she is taking his sarcastic quip literally. ]
[ The camera's flash whips in his direction when he speaks up, and he gets a front row seat to the look on Jane's face as she takes him in. Her shrewd expression, which never lets up, makes her look almost gaunt, shadows sinking sharply across her cheeks and brow. There's resentment in her eyes. She didn't appreciate his reply, and she isn't about to trust him, that much is clear. ]
Anyone else here with you? [ Not that she'll take his answer to heart if he says he's alone when he just snuck up on her without making a sound. ]
