Network Prompts
ONE: LIKE A MOTH TO A FLAME Something about the light of the tablet just seems so alluring. You feel compelled to it, checking the network every free moment, and getting agitated when you can't; you need to talk to people, you need to talk to them now, and hopefully they'll actually respond. Maybe others are having similar attachment problems...
Only one way to find out.
TWO: CAN WE GET ANOTHER LIFELINE OR TWO? So that's it. You're stuck. Maybe there's some kind of a coded message you simply can't decipher. Maybe it's as simple as something's blocking your way and you've got a few tools scattered around, but you can't figure out how to use them to solve whatever puzzle is keeping you from progressing. Or maybe it's something else entirely. Either way, you have no idea how to get around it.
Luckily for you, there's a whole network full of helpful - or maybe unhelpful - souls. Perhaps it's time to ask for some assistance? Someone else is bound to have some kind of insight.
Action Prompts
THREE: SWING BATTER BATTER SWING BATTER BATTER SWING The toy store is nice and cozy, even though sometimes it feels like the dolls are watching you. So you've stayed here for just a little too long, and you're starting to notice... things. But that's just your imagination, right? They can't actually be watching you. They can't actually be moving, either. That door opening? Those footsteps? Maybe they're just a figment of your imagination.
...or maybe they're not. Maybe you should take a baseball bat to whoever that is and find out.
FOUR: A FATAL FUGUE Sunset is fast approaching. You can see some buildings up ahead - if you hurry, you'll make it indoors just in time. But wait! Do you hear someone calling for help and feel compelled to investigate? Do you feel a debilitating headache coming on? Or do you suddenly get a really, really bad feeling about actually walking through those doors?
If you don't snap out of it, it could be deadly. Luckily, there's someone already in that house that might be able to drag you to safety, with or without your approval.
If only someone had a different story to tell! I must - hm. [She stops herself before getting carried away on some train of thoughts about the strange circumstances of their waking up in Norfinbury. This man - very proper - would probably find it very vulgar, she thinks with a smile.
Obviously, she must investigate, and she will. But there are priorities, like making sure she doesn't freeze to death, and that she knows of places where she can get food.
But then, investigation. Peggy's already read through all the documents she could find on the network. It's...interesting, to say the least. She has lots of questions.]
I do long for a hot drink. As far as I understand, there is only one house around here with hot water? Has anyone ever found coffee, or tea?
[A couple of times, she opens her mouth, starts and stops, like a struggling car on a frosty morning. He says he's OK, as she knew he would - he is Steve, after all, strong, dependable, hard-headed Steve, he wouldn't let something like being stuck in a town he doesn't know keep him from keeping on. She smiles at him, tilting her head as her fingers twitch, forcing Peggy to curl them in a fist to prevent herself from reaching out again.]
I've been here only a short while - a few days, and I laid low while getting my bearings. I haven't seen anybody yet, besides on the network obviously. And, as far as I can tell, this is all very real, Steve. [She chuckles, because it's not a great situation to be in, but now - it doesn't really feel dire at all anymore.]
I'm still near the school, I went in to stock up on food, and I found this pillow case which I'm using to double up on rations. I could be warmer, but I did find some long johns and a rain coat. I look very fashionable, you can imagine!
[She holds up the bright pink raincoat she found in the house she woke up in to the camera, raising an eyebrow as she chuckles. It does look ridiculous, but it's excellent protection against the snow.]
I could - I can meet you in the middle, Steve, if you're not far. [She doesn't say, I want to, but it's a near miss. She wants to, so bad - she's missed him so much. Peggy gives Steve another long look, deciding to add, in a whisper, while fighting the flush of her cheeks:]
[Shamelessly herself, Aerith keeps close to Kunsel, soaking up the warmth. There's a part of her that wants to try and peek under his helmet, her curiosity tickled as it is every time she sees him.]
What are you doing around here? [It's an innocent question; she hasn't seen anyone in days. She didn't expect to stumble upon anyone, even less Kunsel. She is grateful, though.]
Two years on a mountain? [Aerith falters, still holding the matches in her hand. Kain's not looking at her.] Alone?
[She can't even imagine. She hates the mere idea; Aerith does better with friends and people to protect and help than she does alone. She can defend herself well enough, but she's always had people in the back of her head.]
[Cullen shakes his head at Dio's mention of the wound and how it looks. He's seen worse - seen men and women turn into abominations when all he wanted was to protect them. The thought makes him grimace, and he shifts his feet, going to sit on one of the ball-filled-bags that serve as chairs. It's loud as he sinks into it.]
I don't mind your wound, Dio. I'm a soldier; I'm used to it. [As he thinks about it, though, curiosity takes over him.] But - how did you get it? You don't have to tell me, of course.
I've been here for a few weeks now. I'm personally used to the climate, but I'm thankful for my coat and armor - I barely feel the cold in it. What about you? How long have you been here? I haven't seen you before.
[For a moment, Dio's expression becomes sad. Not because of the question. He doesn't mind answering it--but because he thinks about the little girl, his young mistress, who wasn't used to it. When he'd tried to help her, and she'd ran away from him in fear, it had hurt him more than he likes to admit.
After an even longer silence, he opts to answer the second question, first.]
I've only been here for a handful of days. I woke up in a house in the ice tunnels, so this is only one of the first buildings I've seen. I'm trying to learn quickly.
[He goes silent for another moment to finish tying off the makeshift bandage before he puts his hands back in his coat pockets, cautiously lowers himself into one of the other "chairs", and focuses his attention on Cullen once more.]
I don't mind sharing. My master took my eye when I was younger--he was a scientist. [As if that somehow explains random, abstract cruelty.] He gave me the burn more recently, but it doesn't matter anymore.
[If he wasn't from a children's cartoon, Kuzco would have much stronger words to say about this. As it is, though, he's just going to keep being incredibly self-absorbed, snotty, and in general completely ignorant to the danger around him.]
[Cullen's hands clench into fists, the leather of his gloves creaking as Dio talks about his injury. Such violence, on a child looking this young, is making Cullen's blood boil. There is nothing Dio possibly have done to deserve such treatment. No one deserves such treatment.
Cullen doesn't believe in torture, be it physical or emotional. He recognises its uses, on rare occasions, but he can tell - this is not it. This is something else entirely.]
It doesn't matter? How can you say that? You must be in unbearable amounts of pain!
[He doesn't mean for the words to come out as violently as they do - he doesn't want to frighten Dio, but he's not always good at controlling his temper. He's just a child!]
[Ciri finds it surprised to have to spell it out. Most rulers she knows would be offended by the mere idea of a woman - for some, still just a girl until they taste her steel - beating them in a duel.
[When he sees the video, Zach can't help himself - he starts laughing. What a moron.]
There's like, two things to do in this place to mainly not die. [He holds up a fingers.] One, don't touch the monsters. [Another fingers.] Two, get into a house when your tablet tells you to.
There's alarms and shit, dude. It's like you want to die.
[She couldn't help but wander into the shop after spending just a little too long out in the cold. She needed to rest if she ever was to make any more progress - seizing up in the snow wouldn't lead to anything good for anyone. Besides, the shop itself was so quaint. Peaceful, in a way - dashes of color that clashed against the monochrome she was becoming so used to seeing outside.
The doll in green holds bittersweet memories, and distracts her enough that she doesn't hear the footsteps behind her until that familiar voice is raising a threat. It's not enough time to dodge; the bat hits her squarely on the shoulder with a loud CRACK. A solid hit, one she can feel through her frame even as she goes sprawling down to the floor. The doll topples, its face crashing into thousands of pieces at Dio's feet.]
Dio...! W-why-- why are you doing this?
[She knew his character. But it didn't make his violence any less painful to see. She clings to her hit arm, keeping it close - trying to delay the loss of the sensation to her fingertips. She couldn't afford to lose that. Not when there was no immediate way to repair the damage.]
[She does, seriously. As chipper as Ginger sounds, the circles around her eyes and the slight edge of mania to her voice hints at how very, very little sleep she's been getting lately.]
Even if I'm not looking at the network, I just, like, have to be doing something with it so I use it as a light to work on sewing or drawing when it's dark. It's totally super duper exhausting!
[She sighs. This isn't very fun at all. Still, she can't stop herself from thinking about how totally gorgeous Peggy looks despite being all tired and grumpy.]
[Peggy brings a hand to her face. She wonders how tired she looks. With barely any makeup around, it's hard to hide the evidence of her sleep deprivation, but Ginger still manages to look all fresh, rosy cheeked. She makes Peggy smile.]
I long for some powder and mascara! At least I still have my lipstick. Makes me love sort of alive, I guess.
What? No way! Oh my God, I totally look like some sort of ghost monster! You're the one who looks amazing!
[Ginger is amazed, astounded! How can someone so gorgeous, so regal looking possibly think that she's the one that looks good?]
Where are you? I've been collecting, like, a whole bunch of makeup and brushes. Some hair curlers, too! I'll be happy to share anything you'd like. And did you hear? Somebody found a store full of beauty supplies downtown!
Oh Ginger, you look wonderful, believe me! [Peggy really wishes she could reach out and pet Ginger's hair, wondering if it's as soft as it looks. She is so lovely, she warms Peggy's heart by her earnestness.]
How wonderful - of all things to find in this town! Barely any food, but makeup? Sure, have at it! I'm just south of the school! I don't think I'm very far from the ice tunnels and the downtown area at this point, but I believe I'm to meet up with Steve.
[ Kain continues scouring through the drawers until he finds some scraps of cloth. He almost wanted to keep looking, find something else, something that didn't have as many uses, like paper, but this would have to do. He drops the cloth on a nearby table and glances around. He'd still rather use almost anything else for kindling. Cloth was a luxury he had on Mount Ordeals only when Baronian supply drops would occur, he couldn't depend upon those here. ]
[ He's honestly dumbfounded by this one. The level of arrogance- ]
One needs care for himself in this place. You run the risk of all around you dying, yet insist you need not learn for yourself? Coddled youth, weren't you?
[ Kain gives an exhale, shaking his head. How unprofessional could one get? ]
[Tea. England heaves a long-suffering sigh; as if being stuck here wasn't bad enough, withholding tea from him is just adding insult to injury. There's definitely a noticeable note of lament in his tone.] If anyone has found another source of hot water, I haven't heard about it. Same goes for the hot drinks. I haven't had a cup of tea for three months now.
[That's a long time, for someone who drinks tea religiously! But he's been looking. Of course, he has no way of knowing what might be in the houses that no one has searched yet, so he's still holding out hope for this particular thing.]
[How can any person be so perfect and wonderful? Ginger doesn't know! She's almost forgotten how tired she is, she's so beside herself with all these compliments!]
That's not too far! I'm at this house with a sewing machine--actually, it's really close to where the ice tunnels start? I could wait there for you if you're going that way anyway! Oh! [Look at these stars all aligning!] You're meeting up with Steve? Even better! I haven't seen him in forever.
[She misses him! And she still has to thank him for that hairclip! And give him, like, ten million hugs! But, wait, thinking of Steve...somehow, her sleep deprived brain manages to realize something.]
Oh...oh, goodness! Peggy, I just realized--you're Peggy, aren't you? Like, I mean, I know you're you! But, you're, Peggy, like, Steve's best friend Peggy that he misses so so so so so much!
Well, I promise you I will be on the lookout and if I find any, I will most definitely share. Nothing better than sharing a good cuppa with someone who appreciates it, right?
[They may be strangers, but Peggy's used to this kind of offerings in the Army. It's just easy for her to say the words, and to mean them, too. She wouldn't want to become one of these people who hoard their things jealously. She doesn't want to live her life this way, even here.]
[Peggy grins and chuckles, so endeared by Ginger. She's just so sweet, radiating with innocence, which is kind of special in such a blasted place.
And then she - Peggy colours when Ginger asks her if she is the Peggy, like she is in some way special. And the fact that Steve, apparently, talked about her...Peggy hides her smile behind her hand before growing just too curious.]
I guess that must be me? What did - Steve say, about me?
[She feels bad about asking, kind of selfish, but she can't help herself, not when - she can barely think of anyone else but Steve, right now.]
[Such a sweet woman. England's proud to call her his own already.]
Indeed. And I promise you the same— been too long since I've shared tea with good company. [Of course, a nation would give anything to make sure their people are safe and happy, so he'd gladly give over all of the tea he found if she wanted it, no need for sharing.]
My colleague and I are currently on our way to the downtown area, so perhaps we'll have some luck at the supermarket.
Oh, I believe I will be on my way there too, soon! I am meeting up with a friend, first. He's American, but he's quite all right. [Peggy laughs, flushing a little as she imagines Steve's face if he heard he say that.]
Maybe we'll be able to meet in person soon! I have been here for a few days now, but haven't seen anyone. It's been...an interesting experience. Lonely.
[He smiles at her, kind of a goofy, besotted smile, because of course Peggy is doing all right for herself, she's wicked smart and tough as nails and knows how to roll with the punches, which are all at the top of the list of reasons he admires her so much. His grin gets a little goofier when she shows him the rain coat and he imagines her wearing it. "Cute" is not usually an adjective he associates with her—beautiful, fierce, goddess-like, terrifying; these are usually closer to the mark—but the picture in his head right now? Very, very cute.]
I'm sure you'll look great. I think it's precisely your color, Peg. [Said with a teasing grin, but he means it. Peggy could be wearing a trash bag and she'd look fantastic.] I've got a ton of warm things, you can have one or two of mine.
Meeting in the middle would be great, that's—that would be much better. What side of the school are you on? Can you describe the house you're in? Or, or show me, with your tablet?
[Steve definitely blushes.] ...Yeah? [His grin gets even goofier and he scratches at the beard a little, absently.] In that case I'm keeping it forever.
