Network Prompts ONE: HUNTING SEASON You wake up in the morning to find that a new application has appeared on your tablet. It's labelled "SCAVENGER HUNT" and when you open it, you find a long list of items that, if the title is anything to go by, need to be collected. At first, the items seem rather innocuous; things like bottle caps, napkins, Scotch tape, mittens. As the list continues, though, the items become a little more interesting. Where are you going to find "one pint of type O- blood"? How does one collect a "cry for mercy"? Does the "human sacrifice" need to be human? Most importantly, what are you supposed to do with these items once you've collected them all? Maybe you should check your list with the Network. Some folks might be willing to pool resources. TWO: ONE, TWO, SKIP A FEW Sometime yesterday, you noticed that a timer placed itself on the Network. Contacting the Admin about it provided no explanation, of course, and nobody's tablet buddy seems to have any answers. It started from zero and began counting upwards, seconds ticking away like lightning, but nothing was happening, so there was nothing to be done. Suddenly, however, you can't help but notice the count stutter and jump upwards to 99 hours in. And then, at 100, it stops and vanishes. As far as you can tell, nothing's changed, but it's disconcerting enough that you can't get it off your mind. Maybe someone else on the Network has some theories. Action Prompts THREE: WHAT WE DO WITH THE SHADOWS You and your companion decided that, for whatever reason, this house was worth investigating. It took something unorthodox—like moving all the furniture to one place, illuminating certain segments of the room, reciting a message, or maybe something else—but by doing it, it seems you've invited another guest. It's a shadowy figure with no face and no discernible limbs, and it goes wherever you go, lingering behind you just so that you can only ever see it out of your peripheral vision. Your companion can see it well enough, though, and sometimes it follows them instead. It doesn't seem to be hostile, but can you know that for sure? Either way, lockdown has already fallen, and you're stuck with it through the night. FOUR: WHO LET THE DOGS OUT? You’ve just gotten comfortable for the night with your traveling companion when something odd happens. You hear an animal. A dog? A cat? A bird? Maybe the sound is coming from outside, or in the other room. Maybe you feel it brush or flutter past you without anything being there. Or maybe you even see it…just out of the corner of your eye, as it darts around a corner. You feel like maybe it’s trying to alert you to something, somehow. Or maybe you just really want to see if you can coax it out. Careful, though, get too close too quickly and you may aggravate it. As phantom as the animal may seem, the claw marks you receive for your trouble feel very real.

Yeah, thought so. Was a long shot.

[She takes another couple of careful, shuffled steps towards the dog, still looking like he could snap at any second, but not doing so just yet.]

D'you think I could touch it, though? [Her scientific mind really would like to try.]

It would not be wise.

[ If this thing is an anomaly there's nothing either of them could do to stop it. But then, if it is an anomaly there's nothing either of them can do to start with. ]

However, we may be out of wise options.

[Claire lets out a small sigh, head tilted indecisively for a little while before she shrugs.]

Worth a shot. I've looked after more dangerous.

[That might not be true, but she still goes ahead, a few steps closer, closer still that she can almost touch the dog. It's sort of whimpering, blinking in and out of existence, it seems, but doesn't look like it's about to try and bite her.]

If it's an anomaly and I die, you can sleep in my backpack. I've got a few blankets and stuff, you'll be cozy.

[ He was gonna do it anyway. But hey, he's here for moral support! Go on, touch the thing. He's got your back. ]

[Claire throws the Cat another amused look, before going for the dog, fingers inching and inching closer and.....

Goes straight through its leg. At least, she seems okay - she's not unconscious nor losing her fingers, and it doesn't look like the dog is in more pain now.

She just. Can't touch it. She sits back, disappointed.]

Well. There's that.

[ Oh good. The Cat relaxes considerably, though it's difficult to tell. His tail goes from a stiff hook around his legs to a light tapping on the floor. ]

There is no help for it, then. A pity.

[Claire gives the Cat a look, pouting a little.]

You know, I wanted to be a vet when I was a kid. This is heartbreaking. Poor thing.

[Even if she couldn't help it, maybe she'd be able to soothe it a little. But she can't touch it. She's helpless.]

You have a kind heart, Claire Temple.

[ But since it can't seem to hurt them, the Cat can at least approach - slowly, of course - and curl up near the creature to purr in a manner than most animals find comforting. ]

[She shrugs, looking down at her hands. Her heart has got her in many a bad situations, and sometimes she wishes she didn't have such a compulsion to try and help lost causes.]

Foolish heart would be more accurate. Hey, do you have a name, besides 'Cat'?

[ He doesn't comment. He's rather fond of fool-hearted people, so long as they have courage. ]

I have had a great many names. You may call me whatever you wish.

Nah, that's not gonna work.

[She doesn't tell him how she doesn't actually like normal cats; beasts of dark evil that they are. He's different, though.]

I'd just call you Kitty if you let me. Creativity's not my strong suit.

Such things do not concern me. The boy known as Davesprite has taken to calling me "Fresh Step".

[ He is offering that as a real suggestion, not a joke. He doesn't know what it means, and he doesn't care. ]

Fresh Step? Why?

[Well. That doesn't make any sense.]

Would you be okay with, I don't know. Felix?

Yes, that would be perfectly acceptable.

[ He didn't ask about "Fresh Step". ]

Do you really not care what people call you?

[That is a curious thing to Claire, honestly. In the world she lives in, names are essential to so many people.

Of course, he is a talking cat, which is already well out of her comfort zone, but. Still. Names matter.]

[ Names have power, but his own true name is impossible for humans to use. So why should it matter what they call him instead? ]
