TEST DRIVE MEME

If you'd like to apply to Snowblind and would like to test the waters first or get a sample set up for your application, this meme is for you! We've even provided some prompts for you to use if you want (but feel free to make up your own). Here's how it works.
✭ Reply to this entry with a character you're considering apping into the game. You can include the name of your character and the fandom in your subject line.
✭ Comment around to others on the meme, whether you're in the game already or not.
✭ Now you have a sample ready for your application!
✭ So go reserve and apply when reservations and applications are open.
✭ Seriously, do it.

Network Prompts
ONE: HUNTING SEASON
You wake up in the morning to find that a new application has appeared on your tablet. It's labelled "SCAVENGER HUNT" and when you open it, you find a long list of items that, if the title is anything to go by, need to be collected. At first, the items seem rather innocuous; things like bottle caps, napkins, Scotch tape, mittens. As the list continues, though, the items become a little more interesting. Where are you going to find "one pint of type O- blood"? How does one collect a "cry for mercy"? Does the "human sacrifice" need to be human? Most importantly, what are you supposed to do with these items once you've collected them all?

Maybe you should check your list with the Network. Some folks might be willing to pool resources.

TWO: ONE, TWO, SKIP A FEW
Sometime yesterday, you noticed that a timer placed itself on the Network. Contacting the Admin about it provided no explanation, of course, and nobody's tablet buddy seems to have any answers. It started from zero and began counting upwards, seconds ticking away like lightning, but nothing was happening, so there was nothing to be done. Suddenly, however, you can't help but notice the count stutter and jump upwards to 99 hours in. And then, at 100, it stops and vanishes. As far as you can tell, nothing's changed, but it's disconcerting enough that you can't get it off your mind. Maybe someone else on the Network has some theories.

Action Prompts
THREE: WHAT WE DO WITH THE SHADOWS
You and your companion decided that, for whatever reason, this house was worth investigating. It took something unorthodox—like moving all the furniture to one place, illuminating certain segments of the room, reciting a message, or maybe something else—but by doing it, it seems you've invited another guest. It's a shadowy figure with no face and no discernible limbs, and it goes wherever you go, lingering behind you just so that you can only ever see it out of your peripheral vision. Your companion can see it well enough, though, and sometimes it follows them instead. It doesn't seem to be hostile, but can you know that for sure? Either way, lockdown has already fallen, and you're stuck with it through the night.

FOUR: WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?
You’ve just gotten comfortable for the night with your traveling companion when something odd happens. You hear an animal. A dog? A cat? A bird? Maybe the sound is coming from outside, or in the other room. Maybe you feel it brush or flutter past you without anything being there. Or maybe you even see it…just out of the corner of your eye, as it darts around a corner. You feel like maybe it’s trying to alert you to something, somehow. Or maybe you just really want to see if you can coax it out. Careful, though, get too close too quickly and you may aggravate it. As phantom as the animal may seem, the claw marks you receive for your trouble feel very real.

pistolproof: rules to live by, tbh. (i see no profit in it for me)

[ Jack gives a show of glancing around as well, despite not hearing or smelling or feeling anything happening when the counter hit 100 and stopped. He shrugs. ]

Nothin' here. But if it were counting up to somethin', it might've happened where the clock is.

[ Similar to how Jack is in a single physical location broadcasting to many different places, he bargains wherever the physical timer is, that's where they'll find there.... "something". ]
mightyratslayer: (what's your spaghetti policy)

[personal profile] mightyratslayer 2016-09-29 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nothing here either... What d'you mean "where the clock is"?

[The camera goes wonky for a moment as he flips the tablet around to look under it.]

I thought it was on the tablet. Did it move?
pistolproof: sorry bro that's totally my b (did i just rain on your parade)

[personal profile] pistolproof 2016-09-30 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
No?

[ Now Jack is honestly and truly confused. ]

Is there not... [ He waves his hands around, gesturing to the whole of the world and everything in it. ] ...an actual clock somewhere?

[ He's from 1740, he doesn't know how electronics work. ]
mightyratslayer: (where are your shoes man)

[personal profile] mightyratslayer 2016-09-30 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Uh... I don't remember a clock anywhere, but maybe? Like a big clock tower or something? Philly's got one of those but I don't remember seeing one here...

[He scratches his beard. This is gonna take some serious detective work...] If something happened when the clock got up to 100, I bet it happened at the clock tower.
pistolproof: if only this compass would work (i know what i want)

[personal profile] pistolproof 2016-10-01 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Aye! A clock tower!

[ That, at the very least, makes sense to him. If there was a clock counting up, and no physical evidence that anything happened here or there, it had to be where the clock was. ]

But, if something be happenin' at the clock tower.... why show us?

[ Whoever is doing this... are they trying to get them to gather in one place? For what reason? ]
mightyratslayer: (give me a chip)

btw if you're apping & need more samples lmk! i'm down to boomerang!!

[personal profile] mightyratslayer 2016-10-01 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I don't know for sure, but I don't think we have a clock tower in town. At least, not yet. People keep opening up new areas, so maybe there's a tower in some new place that we haven't got to yet?

[He opens up the map to doublecheck, but there's nothing that immediately stands out as a clock tower. He'll have to ask Nat and House about this later...]

So I guess the tablet thing maybe wants us to know that something's happening that we can't get to yet.
pistolproof: but why is the sun so bright (i could use some sunglasses)

that would be great, actually! thank you!

[personal profile] pistolproof 2016-10-02 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
[ Likewise, Jack takes out the map and studies it, paying particularly close attention to the boarder between discovered and undiscovered. ]

Perhaps we're close, eh? [ He taps the map with a single finger. ] Close enough to send out some sorta beacon.

[ Like a lighthouse! ]
mightyratslayer: (i was a centaur in my past life)

YEAH LET'S BOOGIE

[personal profile] mightyratslayer 2016-10-02 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Uhh... Maybe. Where are you at right now? I'm south of the school so I don't think I'm close to much.

[He squints at the map on his screen. This is all very confusing...]

What d'you mean by "beacon"?
pistolproof: that thought begins with r and ends with um (wait a minute i'm having a thought)

[personal profile] pistolproof 2016-10-02 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I'm near a.... "convenience store"?

[ Listen, they didn't have those in the 1740s, either. He's much more used to the butcher-baker-candlestick maker set up. Either way, ] I don't see anything but a lotta snow, mate. [ He grins, showing off several of his gold teeth. ]

It... [ He waves his hands around in the air, as though that would help make his point. ] Y'know how you can't see the light from a lighthouse till you get too close? Maybe we've not been close to the clocktower to see it count up before.
mightyratslayer: (he's my protege)

[personal profile] mightyratslayer 2016-10-02 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh. [Charlie lights up, now on board with what Jack's getting at.] You mean like walkie-talkies? Like, the clock tower is putting out some kinda signal but we weren't in range before? Is that what you're saying?
pistolproof: maybe tone it down a few notches (what a manic expression)

[personal profile] pistolproof 2016-10-02 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ Jack has spent this whole conversation with an undercurrent of annoyance. He doesn't understand half the words that are being said and he doesn't understand the terminology enough to technobabble his way without frustration, and asking for clarification time and time again annoys himself more than anyone else.

He doesn't know what walkie-talkies are. And while he doesn't understand the concept of a signal in regards to like, wifi, he does understand it in regards to signal fires.

Finally he feels like they're on the same page, and it's comes with a generous helping of relief.
]

Aye! [ He gives a nod. ] Exactly like that!
mightyratslayer: (master of karate and friendship)

[personal profile] mightyratslayer 2016-10-02 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Charlie claps his hands together. Don't worry, Jack. He hasn't picked up on your annoyance or your ignorance, and half the time he doesn't understand what's going on around here, either. He's just proud of the two of them for having come up with a theory that sounds halfway plausible.]

Yeah, man! I think we're onto something here. Except, okay, so how come we were never in range before? 'Cause if you're up north and I'm down south, that's a pretty wide spread, y'know?
pistolproof: right right like a record baby ([compass] you spin me right round)

[personal profile] pistolproof 2016-10-02 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
[ It's at a time like this that Jack lets himself (for a second, not for more than a moment) wish that Barbossa was here. Not because he misses his mutinous former first mate, but because Hector is so much better than Jack at navigation.

But that doesn't mean Jack is useless.
] Maybe we weren't in the right places before. [ He takes his compass off his belt and flips it open. He moves it this way and that way, pausing when he gets a reading. ] If you be here... [ He taps on the map. ] And I be here... [ He taps again.

He's literally trying to triangulate where this clocktower might be.
]
mightyratslayer: (give me a chip)

[personal profile] mightyratslayer 2016-10-02 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Charlie watches Jack poking at the screen, presumably trying to map out where the clock tower might be. Can he do that with just two people? Charlie stares at his own map and doesn't have a clue how they could possibly get to the bottom of this.

Or, wait.]

Do we need more people?
pistolproof: if only this compass would work (i know what i want)

[personal profile] pistolproof 2016-10-02 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Jack has the three parts of a triangle all before him. He has himself, he has the clocktower and he has Charlie. He should be able to put together where the clocktower is -- his compass is magical and he's worked off a lot less. Except...

Except, whenever Jack turns his attention to the clocktower, his compass spins around in circles. Exactly the way it did when he was in Davy Jones's Locker. Exactly the way it does whenever Jack's thoughts turn to leaving this place and going back home. Which makes sense, if Jack thinks of Norfinbury as some sort of limbo. But the clocktower.....?
]

Aye. [ He says, slowly (uncertain) but definitive. ] Perhaps people who aren't close to us, eh?
