[Tifa laughs softly, reaching out to squeeze his arm.]

I know, I'm just teasing you. So what are you doing now?

[bywolves]

[ He wrinkles his nose at her, but it's playful. It's easy to remember how to act with her. ]

Being king of the elves. [ He says that so dryly. ] Not all it's cracked up to be. And I assume you're doing fine for yourself, considering how you look.

[powersouls]

There was some bad, but a lot of good, too.

[But she's more stuck on the elf thing.]

So... Has that been okay? That everyone knows?

[bywolves]

Not as if I have much choice, now. [ Sniff. ] Modina has done enough to ensure mir have better lives. I've not heard anybody make any remarks to me about it, but I'd assume they're afraid to.

[ Insult the king, get stabbed by terrifying elf guards. ]

I'M DOING IT

Well, that's good, isn't it? What about Hadrian and Gwen? Are they here?

SCREAMS

[bywolves]

[ A beat. Royce looks away. ]

Hadrian is here. He'll be at the guild hall, across from this building.

[powersouls]

[Oh. Well that was a... telling reaction.]

Okay.

[She says it carefully, as though she's afraid saying anything else will sound pushy. And then, a little quieter as she bumps her shoulder into his:]

I'm glad you're doing so well, Royce.

[bywolves]

[ He glances back at her. She didn't ask, and he's surprised. ]

Mm. [ A beat. ] As well as is possible. [ He pushes his hair back out of his face, glancing back down into the courtyard. ] Have you seen anybody else from Norfinbury?

[powersouls]

No, not yet. You're the first. Have you?

[bywolves]

Mm, Solomons was here, a month ago. [ Royce offers her a little smile. ] He has a wife and daughter, now. Renee. Anna.

[powersouls]

[That gets Tifa's face to light up again.]

Oh! Did you meet them? What are they like?

[bywolves]

I met his daughter. [ Royce regards Tifa with a solemn look. ] She was just as much of a menace as Solomons is.

[powersouls]

[She laughs, obviously delighted.]

"Menace" is a strong word, don't you think?

[bywolves]

Absolutely not. [ MENACE IS THE RIGHT WORD. Royce looks like he's hiding amusement, though. ] Neither of them could be worse than my own, though.

[powersouls]

[Oh, Royce. You did it now.]

Your own? Royce.

[Which basically translates to "tell her everything immediately".]

[bywolves]

[ And now a little tiny smile. ]

My own. Mercy. Short for Mercedes.

[powersouls]

How old is she? What's she like?

[bywolves]

Nine. [ He gestures out to the yard, where the girls are playing. ] She's the shorter one. Black hair. Kind and understanding, like her mother, but not an idiot.

[powersouls]

Nine already?

[What haven't you been telling her, Royce?]

She's adorable.

[bywolves]

[ He hums. Yes, his daughter is adorable, thank you. ] Watch your pockets around her. [ Aaaand she takes after her father. ]

These last three years have been interesting, at the very least.

[powersouls]

Royce. You didn't teach her to pick pockets.

[bywolves]

[ He lifts his eyebrows. ] Of course not.

[ c: ]

[powersouls]

[Tifa gives his shoulder a little push. Terrible.]

I'm sure Marlene would love her.

[bywolves]

How old is Marlene now? [ It's amazing how much Tifa just touches, without even thinking. Royce is still getting used to it. It's not bad, just unusual. ]

[powersouls]

Six. I think she's the smartest, most insightful kid I've ever met. Sometimes I think she knows what people are going to do before they do. And we have Denzel now, too. He's eight. He's sweet, but he's had a hard life.
