[ He smiles half-heartedly. ] Allie. They're both mir. Allie was adopted by the Empress. She'll be the next in line for the human throne.

They've been friends since they were both six. I'm glad that Mercy has someone her age to talk to. [ Okay, you big old dad. A beat. ] I suppose Emily and Kesara are adults, now. I would've liked them to know Mercy.

[devoutish]

Can you imagine it?

[Anna yanks at his hair; completely nonplussed, her offers her his index finger for her to hold onto instead.]

Emily, all grown up. Think she still hates being the empress?

[bywolves]

[ Royce is enjoying watching Anna with Alfie - he works so well as a father, it's great. ]

Most likely. [ He tilts his head back to think about it. ] I wonder if she ever got to explore the seas. She insisted.

Hasn't come to visit you either, I'm guessing.

[devoutish]

Not yet. I'd like to see her. It took me a while to work up to wanting to leave home for visits, but I don't think she'll have that problem.

[She has an explorer's heart.]

[bywolves]

She'll find her way here. [ Royce hasn't felt the need to visit other places - he's been so busy trying to figure this whole royalty thing out. ]

Have you visited others?

[devoutish]

Rhys, Angel. Awful world they've got.

[Needless to say, he didn't bring the kid.]

[bywolves]

You visited Rhys and Angel before you visited me? [ Royce drawls. ] Solomons, I thought we had something special.

[ He's amused! ]

[devoutish]

You, Tifa, and Emily would have been my first choices.

[Honest answer!]

But it doesn't always spit me out at a convenient time; I can't always catch you.

[bywolves]

[ Makes sense. ] I'm not always here, no.

I've not tried to find my way to your world. [ So he can't give Alfie a hard time. ] Though Maribor knows having to rule a society of elves who hate me has made me consider it.

[devoutish]

You've got a place in my home if you ever do, mate.

[bywolves]

[ The corners of his mouth twitch. ] I'm sure that'll go over well with your wife.

[devoutish]

We've got a spare room off the kitchen.

Mind you, she would not put up with you any better than I did.

[bywolves]

[ Snort. ] Makes sense. She has to be something like you if you managed to get her to marry you.

[ A beat, and then, almost curiously: ] How did you meet?

[devoutish]

Yeah, I talked her into it.

[He gives a grin, because HE'S A DORK]

Her cousin works for me. She came by to deliver him lunch one day, and I noticed her.

[bywolves]

[ Royce gestures vaguely. ] There has to be more to the story than that.

[devoutish]

[Alfie looks amused.]

You want the full story, is that it? I talked to him before I talked to her. Cowardly, eh? I asked him if she was from the neighborhood, what temple she went to, if she was seeing anyone. She'd been engaged to another man before the war, but he hadn't made it home. We talked a bit; we got to know each other. I took her to the sea.

[bywolves]

I wouldn't ask if it wasn't you. [ Royce says dismissively. It's true, though - he's only interested because it's Alfie. And now, teasing: ] Sounds properly romantic.

Didn't turn out to be a secret con, did she?

[devoutish]

That would be one for the story books, eh?
