[She smiles when she pulls back, unable to help herself and reaching out, petting his cheek and beard, lingering for just a second before stepping back.]

You look well. Did you get right back into the swing of things, then?

[She took some time off, herself. Actually went to Florida and basked in the sun for a week, warming up bones that had been chilled so thoroughly for months. It felt incredible.]

Yeah. Nothing else to do.

[He looks around the office, still seeing it with new eyes after so many hard months away.]

Came back, saw my family, pretended they weren't the best sight I'd seen in months. Then back to work.

[nursetemple]

[Claire leans against the desk, resting her hands on top of it.]

I went on a vacation, just like I planned to before - [Before Norfinbury.]

I just wanted to feel the sun on my skin again. For a while I felt like I would never be warm again.

[devoutish]

You don't feel the sun much in London.

[It is, in fact, raining right now.]

No, doesn't look like it.

[His office, even, is pretty gloomy. But there's still warmth in the lighting, and in such a simple thing - seeing Alfie.]

But you don't care, do you? This is exactly what you live for, even the weather.

[Looking down at his desk, she trails fingers along the wood, smiling to herself. She knows the answer to the question she's about to ask, so she asks it with a tease in her voice.]

Missing any of us, yet?

[devoutish]

I told myself I wouldn't. I told myself that once I got home, I wouldn't give Norfinbury another thought. Home would be all I'd need. That part, that's true. But the rest...

[He does miss them, though never enough to really get sad about it. And he's glad that they can visit each other after all.]

[nursetemple]

[She looks up at him, surprised at this silent admission that he does miss them.]

Royce, Tifa, Emily, right? It's only natural, Alfie. Have you seen any of them yet?

[It makes the most sense. Maybe Watson, too. Whatever they might have shared when in Norfinbury, she doesn't fool herself into thinking she was as important to him as these other people, and that's okay.]

[devoutish]

Royce, Tifa, Emily, Kesara, Watson, you... yeah. I've had a few of 'em as visitors. Haven't left my world myself, yet.

[He doesn't think he will.]

[nursetemple]

Me?

[Yep, she's fishing for it. She's not visiting him because she doesn't care, after all.]

I'm not actually surprised you haven't left. You must be busy around here.

[devoutish]

[He pokes a finger at her shoulder. Yup, you.]

There's a part of me, right, that worries that if I leave I won't be able to get back.

[nursetemple]

[She resists grabbing in hand in hers in answer.]

I get that. I may have tested with visiting people in my universe first, and then universes very close to mine, just to make sure.

[devoutish]

I've never heard of it going badly. But...

[He shakes his head.]

[nursetemple]

Yeah, I know.

[She nods, hanging her head down.]

That's why it's taken me so long to come see you.

[Well. One of the reasons.]

[devoutish]

The only reason?

[Sorry, Claire. He's astute.]

[nursetemple]

Hm, well.

[She shrugs a shoulder, looking back at him.]

I wondered if it'd be awkward.

[devoutish]

Should it be?

[nursetemple]

I don't know. I didn't say it was rational, but I didn't want to barge in on you while you're, who knows, having dinner with your new wife or something. I didn't want to intrude, or make you have to explain. You never owed me that, so I wasn't sure if I should risk it.

[devoutish]

[He smiles.]

I haven't been back nearly long enough for that. No women.

[Well, no long-term women, anyway.]

[nursetemple]

[She opens her hands as she shrugs, an embarrassed smile on her face.]

I couldn't be sure. But I'm - I'm glad to see you. I really am.

[devoutish]

And your man...?

[nursetemple]

I don't - [How to even explain the mess that is Matt now. It's so much better that she's not involved with him anymore.]

I don't have a man.

[devoutish]

All right.

[If she doesn't want to talk about it, he's not going to ask.]

None of this has stopped my mother from trying to settle me down, of course. She doesn't know that I've only just returned from an awful time in Alaska.

[She can think of several ways to remind him of some good times they've had back in Alaska, but that's not why she visited. She was just curious about his health and well-being.]

Are you trying to settle down, or is it just something she wants for you?

[devoutish]

Not trying very hard, no; I'm focusing on my work. But I'd like it for myself - soon, before I get too old to be chasing kids around.

[nursetemple]

[She gives him a smile, even though she once more feels like she's intruding, like she's pulling him back into a time he wants to forget entirely.]
