- about 5'9'', with a naturally bulky body
- he's relatively muscular, especially in the arms and shoulders, and maybe has a little bit of stomach paunch due to age
- posture- and gait-wise, he lumbers and hulks, particularly when he wants to physically intimidate somebody
- he uses a cane sometimes, but seems to do okay without it
- he has a deep voice and a very thick London Cockney accent, and he's prone to mumbling, to the point that it's something of a fandom meme that subtitles are required to watch his scenes
- he wears pretty standard 1920s clothing, often with a big black coat and a black hat, and he occasionally wears a yarmulke (usually in addition to his hat)
- he wears some gold/brass bracelets and flat-faced rings
- he has a faint scar cutting through his beard on his right cheek
- he has a little black tattoo of a crown near the knuckles of his right hand
- his eyes are hazel-ish

after ~4.5 months in Norfinbury

he's still broad-shouldered, but has lost a considerable amount of his bulk - he looks thin and malnourished, maybe even to the point of being bony in some places
- his hair and beard have both noticeably greyed
- he depends on his cane a lot more, and is usually a lot more stooped when he walks, especially when he has his heavy backpack on
- thanks to MN poisoning, he coughs a lot, sometimes even to the point of coughing up blood; he also often looks a little sweaty, like he's running a low-level fever
- he wears whatever hodgepodge of Norfinbury clothing items he can find, but the hat and coat from home make very frequent appearances, and he nearly always has his yarmulke on these days
- he doesn't wear the jewelry outside because he doesn't want the metal to freeze to his skin, but he keeps all of it and sometimes puts it on when he's warmed up a little inside
