They can make a "No dying" pact. Rhys's friends keep dying, too, and he would like them to stop too. Also, Rhys would love chocobos if he ever met one.

...I kind of want to see Rhys in a White Mage robe and staff now. >.> But definitely looking forward to seeing how they interact. For all his problems, Rhys is a pretty good guy, so they could be good company for each other. :)
