Network Prompts
ONE: IT WON'T BE LONG NOW... Well, you made a mistake. You spent too long searching around, or you ran outside near the end of the day for just one more thing, and now you've been locked out. You can search around all you want, but the best shelter you can hope for is pressing against the side of a sealed up building. You do still have your tablet, though. Maybe someone on the network can give you some advice, or at least some comfort while you wait for hypothermia to set in.
TWO: CABIN FEVER Maybe you didn't want that mistake of getting caught outside to happen again, but now you've ended up staying too long in one location, and cabin fever has set in. Maybe you're taking to the network to try and ignore the hallucinations. Maybe you want to tell everyone that you've figured out they're all in on your kidnapping. Maybe you ended up wandering off and now you'd really like to know if anyone can check back in the place you were at for your pants.
Action Prompts
THREE: AN UNEXPECTED MEETING You're going about your business searching what seems like it might be an especially promising house--it's fully intact and there's even a working fireplace with some wood! It looks like someone else has the same idea, though, and you've run into them in the middle of your search. Do you share the potential wealth or try to kick them out? On the other hand, maybe you know who this is, or maybe you're just glad to actually see another person for the first time in ages.
FOUR: GOOD MORGUE-NING You've just woken up in a morgue after dying in one unfortunate way or another. You have no idea where you are beyond that, but your tablet is insisting you can't stay here, so you should probably get out of here pretty quickly. Of course, bringing people back from the dead isn't a perfect science, so you're missing something important to you. Maybe you've lost your voice, maybe you can't remember where you're from, maybe you can't remember where you are right now. It looks like someone else is nearby, though. Maybe they can help you out?
[He can't count the amount of nights that he's sat in the darkness wishing to feel the cold for just a moment. He used to watch Ed shiver in his sleep in envy, the recollection of frost touching his own skin a pale memory. But now, in some twisted way, he's one of the luckiest ones here. He may have lost his alchemy somehow, he may be separated from everyone he loves, but at least he isn't freezing to death.]
Mm, count me in.
[Now that he's found someone he can help, he'll not be leaving her all night if he can help it.]
Most people I come across at night haven't even started to make a snow shelter, you must have done this before. Was your home cold too?
[He gets a brighter smile for that. Even if he's a stranger, waiting a storm out with some company is better than waiting it out alone. Besides, him being out here and looking for people to help says a lot about him.]
Great! It's this way. [She jerks her head, indicating where she means before she starts pushing through the thick snow again.] I grew up in the South Pole, so this kind of weather's pretty normal for me. I'm usually inside when it hits, though.
[True, she'd gone out in a blizzard to reach the spirit portal before, but she'd also had her bending at the time.]
[It's strange, but he's getting more and more used to hearing of places that mean very little to him. He's not met anyone else who's even heard of Amestris here, let alone come from there.
He chuckles and angles himself as they walk to make himself into some sort of moving wind breaker.]
That seems like the more sensible option, so why aren't you inside tonight?
I thought I'd be smart and try to search for more supplies.
[Some exasperation bleeds into her voice now, and her mouth twists slightly. It's probably a good thing Beifong isn't around--Korra's sure this is exactly the kind of reckless behavior that makes the Chief of Police doubt her so much.]
Got caught in the storm on the way back and... [She shrugs, as well as she can when she's fighting with the snow.] Here I am. At least I know what to do when I'm stuck in weather like this.
[She perks up once they reach the pile of snow she'd been working on.] Oh yeah, I never got your name. Mine's Korra.
[She sounds remarkably unconcerned for someone stuck in a snowstorm which claimed lives frighteningly frequently, but maybe this 'South Pole' really was a true land of snow and ice to rival this one. Her shelter is certainly taking a shape that looks practised, and she's not overtly shivering as many others here do.]
O-Oh! It's Alphonse, but you can call me Al. I'm really glad we ran into each other, Korra, it's better to be with company in a storm like this than all alone.
[He would smile at her if he could. Alas, he can't, but his tone of voice is smiling for him.]
You're pretty cheerful, compared to the rest of the people stuck here with us.
[But at least it's keeping Korra's own spirits up, too. Though she's worried about lasting through the night, especially with so little equipment, she doesn't want to make Al panic either. Besides, she's hoping her experience with the snow will keep her alive when the storm had claimed the others.
She picks up the wide piece of wood she'd been using as a shovel, glancing at Alphonse speculatively.]
If the armor's not hurting you, you can help me hollow out this area some more while I pack the snow in the dome down tighter.
[He gives her a quick thumbs up, before he immediately goes to work. He misses his alchemy keenly in moments like this, when it could mean the difference between life and freezing to death, how much better would it have been to be able to transmute the snow into the right shape in seconds? Ah well, if wishes were fishes... His armour hands and feet are at least big enough to be almost shovel-like themselves, so he can help hollow out a hole fairly fast.]
I guess I just think it's better to look for the good, that way you have the energy to keep going. I know there are a lot of dark clouds here, but... surely that just means there's more silver lining to find too?
[She makes some adjustments to the structure herself, widening the walls and adding more height to them to accommodate her new friend. Once in a while, she pauses to rub some heat back into her frozen hands, wishing more than ever that she had a pair of thick gloves or her firebending to warm her up.
Though she hadn't replied to Al earlier, Korra does now, giving him a brittle sort of smile.]
Has anyone told you you're a real sport? Not a lot of people would think that way. [She takes a deep breath, lungs filling with the cold air.] But you're right. We have to stay optimistic or it'll just make this worse.
No-- No, it's okay, I can sit at the entrance and keep the wind out, you don't need to make it any bigger.
[He reaches down to try and grasp her hands in order to stop her working, concerned that she may be cutting herself on the ice and damaging her bare skin by continuing to dig this way.]
I think it's good now, you should curl up inside and I'll sit here.
Aha... haha... ha... No, really, I promise it'll be fine.
[He squeezes her hands once in reassurance, which probably isn't very comfortable because ice just makes metal really cold to touch, before settling himself decisively at the entrance to the little shelter.]
[The icy metal nips at her skin, but Korra ignores it in favor of studying him, trying to figure out why he's so confident.]
How can you be sure?
[Even people who've lived with snow all their lives, like her, would be reluctant to stay out in a storm like this. And he's wearing a metal suit, besides.]
[He's not about to explain that he doesn't have a body to get cold, and even if the metal of his armour warps in the cold then it won't actually hurt him physically.]
I guess you'll just have to trust me, and maybe think about yourself instead?
[He says it cheerfully, giving her a thumbs up at the same time to take the sting out of his decision, but he can truthfully be stubborn as a mule when he wants to be.]
So it might be a good idea not to waste your energy trying.
[Finally, she pulls her hands back and crosses her arms over her chest as she scowls at him.]
Fine, but I'm staying awake and keeping you company. Someone's gotta make sure you're okay.
[Then Korra leans in and jabs at his general chest area with her pointer finger, just hard enough to make a point without hurting herself on the metal.]
And if you end up getting hurt because of this, I'm punching you myself. Got it?
[She relents after that, smiling slightly. The threats out of the way now, and even if he's not taking her seriously, he'll learn his lesson later. If anything goes wrong.]
I just checked the buildings around here. You can tell if people left things behind when they moved on, you know? Most of the time there isn't really anything you can use, though.
[Korra finishes packing down the snow and finally crawls into the shelter. She draws her legs up to her chest, looking out at her new friend through the entrance.]
[As soon as Korra is inside, Alphonse will sit at the entrance and shuffle forwards enough that his body becomes almost a fourth wall for the shelter. It might not be the warmest, but it has to help a little bit.
He thinks it's a shame that she got shut out with nothing to show for her extra effort in scavenging, so he doesn't dwell on that in case it's a sore point for her either.]
Yeah! It's so pretty out here, I could watch the snow fall forever.
[And probably end up frozen to the ground and with the metal of his body cracked and split with the cold.]
[Korra plucks at the sleeve of her jacket, not for the first time glad that they had left one for her when she woke up. The sleeveless shirt she'd been wearing when she was taken would not have stood up against the extreme cold.]
It's pretty. [If she tilts her head slightly, she can still see the snow falling outside, though Alphonse's armor covers most of the view.] Back home, I used to watch at the window and wait until the worst of the snow storm was over. Then I'd run out and build snowmen. Have you ever made one before, Al?
[Even though it was impossible for Al's expression to alter, he still somehow manages to give the distinct impression that he is smiling. The lights of his eyes dim slightly, wistful in memories.]
One year the snow fell so deep that our house was practically cut off. Brother and I made a whole snow army with alchemy... Our hands got so wet and cold drawing the transmutation circles in the snow.... Mom held my hands so tight in hers to warm them up.
[Only a few months later the wave of disease had swept through and stolen her. Even though remembering his mother always had a tinge of sadness and guilt, he was glad that at least he could remember some of the happy times without pain.]
[A smile touches her lips as she tries to imagine this--but when she doesn't know how Al looks under the armor, she has to do some filling out the blanks herself.]
What's...alchemy? I just used my bending to make the snowmen, but your way sounds faster.
[Alchemy wasn't extremely fast in those days. Drawing transmutation circles takes time, and they were still young and learning then which made them even slower. Al leans forward, clearly interested in bending in return.]
Alchemy is the science of deconstructing and reconstructing matter. [He holds up one hand, presses it to the other, and then holds that up as if transferring between them.] As long as what you want to make is physically possible out of the chemical components you have available, and it's not of a greater mass, then anything is possible.
[The passion in his voice is clear, this is a kid who loves learning and loves alchemy.]
So what's bending? I've not heard of it before, can it only be used to make snowmen?
[How does science build snowmen, she wants to ask. Or anything else he's mentioned. From the way Al's describing it, alchemy can make anything, as long as you have the right ingredients.
Maybe she'd ask him after she explains bending.]
Bending is the ability to control the elements. There's four main types: water, earth, fire, and air. Most people can use one type of bending--I wish I could show you how it works, but my bending's gone. [She lifts a hand, staring at it in frustration.] I haven't been able to use it since I woke up here.
[Wow, bending sounds really interesting, and totally alien. Alchemy could do a lot of amazing things and, in it's own way, was capable of melding certain elements into obeying the alchemist's whim. But bending sounded a lot more advanced.]
Me either. Um, I mean-- no alchemy, obviously I haven't been able to use bending since I can't use that anyway.

What? No! [She doesn't pull her hands away, too busy staring at him in shock.]
