[ Royce starts - but he has enough control over his reflex to not karate chop Alfie's daughter for grabbing at him, thanks. ]

Anna. [ He raises his eyebrows at her, reaching to tie his hair back. ] You have menace written all over you.

[devoutish]

She's learned to walk.

[The long-suffering tone of his voice says it all, really. Heart attacks on the daily as she gets into all kinds of trouble.]

There's a reason I haven't put her down. Have you got any of your own yet?

[He knows Royce had wanted to, with Gwen.]

[bywolves]

[ He opens his mouth - and then closes it, looking out over the balcony at the girls scream-laughing as they climb after a raccoon that's scampering up a tree. ]

Just one. [ His tone is fond, but he's quieter. Sadder. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie follows his gaze, and walks over, angling himself so that his body is between the girl he's carrying and the steep drop off the balcony.]

Which one?

[bywolves]

The one not in the tree. [ The black-haired nine year old, with her hands on her hips. She watches the blonde climb the tree, trying to grab for the raccoon, grinning widely. Royce leans over the balcony. ]

Mercy. Short for Mercedes.

[devoutish]

She's big.

[And what the hell is that animal? Some kind of weird cat?]

How old?

[bywolves]

[ That is Mr. Rings, gosh, Alfie. ]

Nine. Almost ten. I didn't know she existed until three years ago.

[devoutish]

[Alfie mouths fucking hell - he's gotten used to swearing completely wordlessly, because of his daughter's impressionable young ears.]

Gwen's?

[Who else's would she be?]

[bywolves]

[ Royce looks vaguely amused at Alfie's wordless swearing. Adorable. Big bad gangster dad. ]

Gwen's. She kept Mercy a secret from me, I'm... not sure why. She must've known it'd be important.

[devoutish]

[He turns back to Royce now, squinting.]

You haven't asked?

[bywolves]

Never had the chance. [ His voice is tighter, now. ]

[devoutish]

[Alfie goes quiet. That could mean a lot of things. Sensing the tension, Anna goes wide-eyed, reaching up to nervously play with her father's hair.]

Royce?

[Is there something you want to tell him, bro?]

[bywolves]

[ Royce leans over the balcony, staring out into the courtyard. ]

She was murdered three years ago, when I returned from Norfinbury. [ A beat, and then he looks back at Alfie, expression weary. He's not angry anymore, and not - comatose, like he was, but he still can't talk about this easily. ] By Arcadius. I'll spare your daughter the details.

[devoutish]

Ah, Royce.

[They're close enough that Alfie actually looks pained for him - but pitying, but very empathetic.]

[bywolves]

[ Royce looks back over the railing at his daughter. ]

I'll fill in the gaps when we don't have small ears listening in. [ Deep breath. ] Mercy is what I have, now.

[devoutish]

She's a beautiful girl. She looks like you.

Who's her friend?

[bywolves]

[ He smiles half-heartedly. ] Allie. They're both mir. Allie was adopted by the Empress. She'll be the next in line for the human throne.

They've been friends since they were both six. I'm glad that Mercy has someone her age to talk to. [ Okay, you big old dad. A beat. ] I suppose Emily and Kesara are adults, now. I would've liked them to know Mercy.

[devoutish]

Can you imagine it?

[Anna yanks at his hair; completely nonplussed, her offers her his index finger for her to hold onto instead.]

Emily, all grown up. Think she still hates being the empress?

[bywolves]

[ Royce is enjoying watching Anna with Alfie - he works so well as a father, it's great. ]

Most likely. [ He tilts his head back to think about it. ] I wonder if she ever got to explore the seas. She insisted.

Hasn't come to visit you either, I'm guessing.

[devoutish]

Not yet. I'd like to see her. It took me a while to work up to wanting to leave home for visits, but I don't think she'll have that problem.

[She has an explorer's heart.]

[bywolves]

She'll find her way here. [ Royce hasn't felt the need to visit other places - he's been so busy trying to figure this whole royalty thing out. ]

Have you visited others?

[devoutish]

Rhys, Angel. Awful world they've got.

[Needless to say, he didn't bring the kid.]

[bywolves]

You visited Rhys and Angel before you visited me? [ Royce drawls. ] Solomons, I thought we had something special.

[ He's amused! ]

[devoutish]

You, Tifa, and Emily would have been my first choices.

[Honest answer!]

But it doesn't always spit me out at a convenient time; I can't always catch you.

[bywolves]

[ Makes sense. ] I'm not always here, no.

I've not tried to find my way to your world. [ So he can't give Alfie a hard time. ] Though Maribor knows having to rule a society of elves who hate me has made me consider it.
