Network Prompts
ONE: SEE THAT WE CAN SEE
It's late and you're settling down for the night when you notice a strange light coming from... outside? Through the heavy snowfall, you can just make out the haze of glowing eyes in the distance. Dozens of them. It's difficult to tell through the window, but they seem to be staring directly at you. Since it's after lockdown, you can't get outside to investigate, but maybe others in town are seeing the eyes too. You'd better take to the Network to see what's going on.

TWO: BEHIND THESE HAZEL EYES
You can't sleep. You've been trying, trying, trying. But every time you close your eyes, you see the eyes of the prophet etched into the insides of your eyelids. The symbol only seems to get brighter and clearer the longer you keep your eyes shut, the closer you get to drifting off. It chills you awake. Nothing seems to help. Maybe there are others on the Network who are having the same problem. Or, at least, someone who doesn't mind keeping you company through the long hours.

Action Prompts
THREE: THREE'S A CROWD
You and your traveling companion are exploring what looks to be a perfectly normal building when you notice something strange carved into the wall. Is that an eye? Strange indeed, but what's stranger is that new carvings keep appearing, always where you're not looking. Soon, the whole room is full of eye carvings. Is your companion doing this? If not them, then who?

FOUR: THE KNIFE'S EDGE
Most everyone in town still has eyes that are either glowing or shaped like the prophet's symbol, and your eyes are no different. These are the same eyes that made everyone attack each other a few nights ago. Every time you catch a glimpse of yourself, maybe in the reflection of a window or the video feed on your tablet, you feel a little sick. Unfortunately, your traveling companion's eyes look strange too, and they're the opposite of yours. Both of you are in danger if those murderous urges come back, which makes it difficult to trust each other after what you've been through. It's late at night when a dark thought crosses your mind--you do have a knife. Not that there's any reason to use it, of course... Right?

Sheriff Rowe here. Is anyone else seeing the eyes outside the windows? I'm counting five pairs visible from Building 6, looking south.

FOUR
[Reggie's eyes are shaped like these Prophet eye... things. He's honestly not sure what to make of it. Ever since waking up here, fresh from having concrete growing out of every bone in his body, he's been wondering if this is some sort of afterlife. It's nothing like they talked about at the ceremonies in the Big House when he was a kid.

He glances up from his tablet and over to his companion for the night. Their eyes are glowing. It's unsettling.

The sheriff reaches up the rub the back of his neck. There's the knife he picked up if he needs it. But he's really hoping he won't need it.]

So, which of you with the glowing eyes has locked himself outside tonight?

Three

[In Kaz's experience, if something seems like magic, it's usually just a clever trick. In this case, it's one he hasn't yet figured out how his companion is doing. Of course, in Norfinbury, just about anything seems possible: ghosts, demons, what have you. But there are eyes appearing on the walls, and there is another person wandering this building with him, and he has yet to see the two in the same place at the same time. He'll hold off on the ghosts and demons for now.

He watches his traveling partner carefully, mostly out of the corners of his eyes. He listens for their footsteps in the dust and rubble. And yet he still misses it when they put more of the symbols into the wall. This is incredibly frustrating. No one should be able to pull this over on him, of all people.

And yet he can't exactly ask. Not outright, anyway. He stops exploring to lean on the head of his cane and raise one eyebrow.]

Is there a point to that? [His voice is gravelly as ever, but he thinks he's doing a fine job of hiding his powerful irritation.]

[Moriarty sits at the kitchen table, frowning at his reflection on the dark tablet screen and prodding at one prophet eye with the tip of a box cutter. The other night's fiasco has put him in a sour mood. Sure, all of this prophet business was fun at first, but then the town got into his mind, and, well. Can't have that, now, can we?]

Anyone else still up?

I'm bored to death here. What I would give if this place had King's Knight to pass the time, it sure gets boring being locked up at night. Especially when you're otherwise a night owl.

[Or you know, can't sleep. Which usually isn't a problem for Noctis...]

It almost makes me miss being out at night back home. Almost.

FOUR

[Noctis has tried to keep to himself. Naturally, he's a pretty shy guy, and he feels out of sorts being here. Out of his element, as it were. However, the eyes haven't helped him ease into this situation any, and further such when there were others trying to kill one another over them.

Which leaves him to his idle thoughts regarding such as he turns a knife over in his hand. He has no desire to use it on his traveling companion, even if they have those creepy prophet symbol eyes, while his own merely glows.

It does, however, lead to the alarming thought that his companion might turn on him. Suddenly, he's grateful for the knife in his hand, but then wonders what his companion might be armed with. Worried eyes glance their way across the room while they're not looking, as he tries to assess them for possible weapons.]

So... Ever think our eyes will go back to normal? Not that they're not cool, or whatever, but I gotta say, they're a little freaky.

[He asks this, casual and cool, hiding any worry that might be bubbling beneath the surface, tucking the knife away meanwhile. He doesn't want to give off a threatening vibe if he doesn't have to, after all. Let alone cause a fight because of misconstrued intent.]

[Her voice is low and velvety as she addresses the network, her words enunciated imploringly. It's exactly the tone of the late-night phone calls that no one admits to making.] What do you think about when you close your eyes?

[It's a suggestive question, and purposefully so, but she's really hoping to hear a few answers about eyes.]

THREE.

[Danger isn't new to Irene. She's flirted with danger just the same as she's flirted with anyone else. Her life has been mired in danger ever since she decided how much she likes misbehaving.

She's never been easy to frighten. But of course, she's used to real danger. Governments, scandals, terrorists. She's not used to whatever this place is.

However, she can't let anyone see that she's afraid if she ever hopes to gain any measure of the control she once had over her own life. So she levels her companion with a curious look after she spots another eye on the wall, probably the fifth or sixth by now. It doesn't quite have the same effect without her usual repertoire of cosmetics, but her eyes are as sharp as ever.]

Huh? [ That one gets the same treatment. He looks at his companion, dumbfounded. ] You're not...doing that, are you?

Four

[ Henry couldn't stand being someone who tried to hurt others. His eyes were wrong, so wrong. Being forced into serving 'the Prophet' made him feel sick to his stomach. So when he sees the knife, he holds it and turns it over in his hands.

He'd normally never think of this, not after everything he'd learned back home. But it might be the only way. He holds the knife out to the person stuck with him here, handing it to them. ]

So yeah, he was, y'know, already pissed about the situation purely going on the perpetually shitty weather but then someone had to throw eerie eye-stalking into the mix (maybe magic too, he doesn't like to rule out the possibility) of exploring a fucking tundra-ridden town which isn't doing anything to improve his mood.

He kicks a pebble at a wall of carvings, arms folded across his chest to keep in what little bodyheat he owns, fervently wishing for a .45 to make himself feel better. Failing that, he takes out his pad to snapshot a picture of a blank pillar, whistling as he lazily pirouettes to snap another; of the same spot, now with a carving in place. It's not exactly Red Robin levels of detective work with all of Jason's tech nerfed to shit, but it'll do for now.

[The Doctor, in a word, looks like hell. He's clearly not slept in a very long time (for him) and he doesn't seem to be getting any sleep tonight either. But, he doesn't want to admit to what's keeping him awake. It reminds him too much of the creature that stalked him in his Confession Dial.]

I can't sleep. So I'm going to tell you a story that was told to me by the Brothers Grimm. They're lovely chaps. On my darts team. Darts is a great sport, by the way. Maths and alcoholic beverages. The best way to spend a morning. Anyway, according to them, there's this emperor and he asks this shepherd's boy, "How many seconds in eternity?" there's this mountain of pure diamond. It takes an hour to climb it, and an hour to go around it! And the shepherd's boy says, "Every hundred years, a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiselled away, the first second of eternity will have passed."

You must think that's a hell of a long time. Personally, I think that's a hell of a bird. Though, as someone who's done just that? It actually is a hell of a long time.

[He stares at the camera for a long moment.]

I have been relatively silent up to this time. Minding my own business, doing what I can to stay alive. But to whomever decided that they can infiltrate our minds with haunting visions so that we can't sleep: you have made one enormous mistake. If you value your continued existence, if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there is one thing you never, ever put in a trap.

[He offers a bit of a sharky grin.]

I know what that one thing is. The question is: do you?

Three

The Doctor looks around. Mystified. This isn't that different from when he first encountered The Silence. Could it be that they've some how survived? That they are here, in this town, right now? And instead of drawing hashes on his body, he's drawing eyes?

The Doctor finally decides to speak to the other who is with him. "Look, I've encountered creatures like this before. In my world, they're called The Silence. They were once priests. Confessors. Because the only way to feel properly forgiven for your deepest darkest sins is if you forget you've ever told anyone about them. So, when you look away from them, you've forgotten they were there. But, rather than drawing eyes, might be better to draw hashmarks on your body. It's best to keep count of how many of them are around."

He doesn't really expect this to work. Nothing else he has planned has gone right in this town, but maybe he can stop the drawn eyes from multiplying around them.

[The camera-sky Sheikah never posts with video. Coming to this place has not made him more eager to show his face to others. Nevertheless, his soft, androgynous voice must be familiar to the network by now, and that's aside from the fact that everything he posts has his username attached.

Well. No bother. There's no need for anonymity on a night like tonight, plagued with disturbing... hallucinations? visions? something of that sort - when he closes his eyes. What he needs is a distraction.
]

I fear the prophet is haunting me. [the words are soaked in weariness.]

Someone, share a tale from your world with me. Anything to pass this sleepless night.

[ 3. (if you prefer action brackets, feel free to switch) ]

The eye is a symbol loaded with meaning for Sheik. There was the obvious connection to the Sheikah's traditional emblem, which Sheik wore herself, decorated with sharp triangles for lashes and a long, bloody teardrop pouring from its center. But it meant much more beyond that. There's the concept of the mind's eye, not unlike the precognitive talent she had as a child; the figurative "eye" of the Goddesses, who must be watching Sheik even now as they continuously test her faith; the single red eye that Sheik exposes to others while hiding the rest of her boy's face behind cloth and hair...

So which one of these variable meanings ought Sheik attach to the carvings appearing conspicuously around the room? When he saw the first, he'd dismissed it as something left by another scavenger or just another one of the city's numerous mysteries... but he's seeing more of them now, and he's certain at least a few were not there the last time he looked.

"Wait," Sheik says. The young man stops but does not turn to talk to his companion. "Do you see it as well? Whatever it is - illusion or not?"

He glances around the room. Now that he paused to look closer, he isn't noticing any new ones. Or did it just stop momentarily?

"...Illusion. It must me some sort of trick."
