Network Prompts
ONE: IT WON'T BE LONG NOW... Well, you made a mistake. You spent too long searching around, or you ran outside near the end of the day for just one more thing, and now you've been locked out. You can search around all you want, but the best shelter you can hope for is pressing against the side of a sealed up building. You do still have your tablet, though. Maybe someone on the network can give you some advice, or at least some comfort while you wait for hypothermia to set in.
TWO: CABIN FEVER Maybe you didn't want that mistake of getting caught outside to happen again, but now you've ended up staying too long in one location, and cabin fever has set in. Maybe you're taking to the network to try and ignore the hallucinations. Maybe you want to tell everyone that you've figured out they're all in on your kidnapping. Maybe you ended up wandering off and now you'd really like to know if anyone can check back in the place you were at for your pants.
Action Prompts
THREE: AN UNEXPECTED MEETING You're going about your business searching what seems like it might be an especially promising house--it's fully intact and there's even a working fireplace with some wood! It looks like someone else has the same idea, though, and you've run into them in the middle of your search. Do you share the potential wealth or try to kick them out? On the other hand, maybe you know who this is, or maybe you're just glad to actually see another person for the first time in ages.
FOUR: GOOD MORGUE-NING You've just woken up in a morgue after dying in one unfortunate way or another. You have no idea where you are beyond that, but your tablet is insisting you can't stay here, so you should probably get out of here pretty quickly. Of course, bringing people back from the dead isn't a perfect science, so you're missing something important to you. Maybe you've lost your voice, maybe you can't remember where you're from, maybe you can't remember where you are right now. It looks like someone else is nearby, though. Maybe they can help you out?
[ As a ninja, Sheena had been trained to be cautious, but that doesn't mean she always followed that training. Okay, she rarely followed it; usually running head first into situations without thinking. Or, if she had thought about it, she'd still run into it.
Since coming to Norfinbury, however, she's had to fall back on her training. Now, she has to be concerned about how long she spends outside and know when to look for shelter. Dying hadn't been a good experience, and neither had waking up from it.
Two things she wants to avoid again, thank you very much.
So, she's once more back in the house she's stayed in for the past few days, staring at the walls and the floor as they repeatedly switch places with each other. Windows where you are walking are a very disturbing image--especially with an inky black background that looks like it can swallow you up if you accidentally step on one. And a fireplace above? Yeah, no.
After watching the switching for some time, Sheena has huddled herself where it seems pretty safe as the windows and fireplace avoid one of the darker corners of the room. Taking out her tablet, she sends out a voice transmission, not wanting anyone to see her panic and fear. ]
Ummm, this is Sheena Fujibayashi. I was wondering... Is anyone else having trouble with the place they're staying in?
[ So subtle, Sheena. ]
Action: 4
Groaning, Sheena stretched and yawned. She didn't want to wake up. She had been having some nice dreams and didn't want them to end. But she knew she had to get up; had to be responsible. Finally opening her eyes, she realized she didn't recognize the room she was in, and what was that voice? And where was it coming from? Looking about her, she finally found the tablet and pulled it out.
Is this what magitechnology looked like? Peering at it, it once again told her she had to leave the place, but if she didn't know where she was, how could she go? She sat there, swinging her legs as she tried to piece the puzzle together. She was on what looked like a table, so maybe she was sick and had been taken to a doctor? Finally, spotting someone who might be able to help, Sheena hopped off the table, and padded over to them, tugging on the back of their shirt.
When they turned, they would see nineteen-year-old adult Sheena, fully grown and filled out, but who they would meet would be five-year-old Sheena, who had totally forgotten she had grown up--and everything that had happened in those fourteen years.
[ He's not a stranger to this type of environment. In the midst of all of this, he can be grateful for that much. He'd arrived decently well-prepared, then, and is still clad in the layers of wool and fur that always protected him in the mountains, whether the winter presented was natural or not. The jury's still out on this place and this winter, but that's beside the point.
Still... It could be going better. It could be going a lot better. He'd arrived separate from Sven, so his movement here is far slower than he would like. The terrain here isn't familiar in the same way that his mountains are, either, and his limited knowledge is another inhibition in the face of a very disquieting puzzle.
He's a survivor, though. He's made it this far. He'll just keep going, right? What else is there to do?
The house is in good shape. The glass in the windows is still intact, even, and forcing the door open reveals an interior that's dust covered and sparse, but dry and free from gusts. There's a hearth with dry wood in place. It's almost suspiciously serendipitous, really. He's about to dig around in his pack for his flint and steel when the sound of movement behind him signaled that he's not alone.
He's not exactly equipped to fight, but it doesn't stop him from trying to get some semblance of the upper hand through intimidation. By most people's standards, Kristoff is a large man in both height and breadth. Knowing that, he stands and puts on his straightest, most grim posture before turning to face whoever it is that's decided to share this apparently good fortune.
He's not even sure if the tough-guy act is necessary, here, but better safe than sorry. His face is largely covered with a red scarf, and his voice is a little muffled when he speaks. ]
"Don't mistaken what I'm doing for kindness, Kimbley," Greed says, his voice dangerously low. He has no reason to change his mind, or to break his word; he doesn't lie, and he knows Kimbley knows that. Thankfully, Greed doesn't have a specific reason to violently maim Kimbley, even if he is a traitor.
It won't do any good and the effort involved would probably kill him again.
He doesn't answer Kimbley's question right away-- he's not sure how to. The obvious answer is that he doesn't have a damn clue what direction won't kill them. "We'll pick a direction and go in it, unless you have a better idea."
"Kindness?" Kimbley scoffs. He sounds vaguely amused by that. "You really think I'm that dumb? I'm wounded." He presses a hand to his chest as if to appear innocent, but he doesn't even bother altering his expression. His smirk is dark, but he doesn't seem dangerous.
Greed's statement gets him to groan though and Kimbley reaches up to rub the back of his head. "Well, I'm definitely gonna freeze to death. I'm probably better off in the morgue." He glances back toward it, frowning. It's not an idea place to stay, but at least it wasn't this cold. With that decided, Kimbley moves to try to open the doors. "Have fun out there." He says before he's even attempted to pull on the handle.
Of course his luck is terrible, so it looks like the doors aren't going to open any time soon. Kimbley's groan this time is much louder.
"You're stupid enough to wander back to the master who locked you up in the first place," Greed's gaze flickers deliberately to the lieutenant colonel stars on Kimbley's shoulder before he stares back at the snow. He's still not quite willing to give up the coat, but there's a growing part of him certain he stole it off of a dead body.
His expression is still severe. "Nothing to eat in there," Greed says deliberately, after Kimbley's tried to open the doors and failed. "I know you're no good at planning things out, Kimbley, but hiding out in a place full of dead bodies is short-sighted, even for you."
"Beats being dead," The remark is out there before Kimbley can stop to think about it, but he's not really bothered any. It's true. Though he can't really talk about that anymore, so he shrugs and turns to face Greed.
The Homunculus does have a point. Even if he could get back inside there, there isn't anything to eat. He's a despicable person, but he really doesn't have any interest in trying to live on human bodies. He narrows his eyes at the Homunculus' remark but doesn't offer an explanation. Maybe he could say something about Greed not freezing his ass off because he's a Homunculus, but he's not sure that's right, so he opts not to say anything about that.
"Well, there's no getting back in there, so I guess we'll head out." He wishes he could blow up the door and absently flexes his hands.
He's really not sure if Kimbley's being literal or figurative there. "Yeah? Looks to me like we both woke up in body bags, so someone sure thought you were dead."
It doesn't matter that he's out of his element here, that he's still cold despite the coat. Greed's really not the sort to enjoy arguing, but he just thinks about all he did for Kimbley-- about saving the man's life. Martel had been right, Greed shouldn't have trusted him.
Oh well. Nothing he can do about it now, as angry as it makes him. And he's not interested in leaving Kimbley to die, either. "Come on, then," he says and starts to wander into the snow, not really caring what direction it is.
But she watches him, idly, while he sets things up -- for her part, she pulls out a pipe and a small bag of tobacco and begins stuffing it. Though in doing so she reveals that she does not in fact have a knife (or at least not one that's in her hands and ready to use), she figures this is opportunity that can't really passed up.
At the very least, it'll continue to be funny. She just grins wider, showing her teeth when he glances, and takes a seat on the floor a bit aways from him.
"Futatsuiwa from Sado. Mamizou if you're not one for formalities, which you don't seem to be. I don't suppose you could...ah, what do they say? 'Spare a light'? I only have one pipe, but if you'd like I'm more than willing to share it."
They'd all been told that. No one knew why. Questioning it wasn't worthwhile, was it? No one would be there to answer. Everyone was in the same situation - captured. No natives.
James ran his hands through his hair. It was growing out. He'd been here for so long now. When was the last time he'd breathed without seeing his breath mist in the air?
"James," came her voice, soft and just beside him. He didn't look at her. Her breath didn't mist; she wasn't real.
Outside, the scarping of a giant knife over stone could be heard.
"I'm here, James."
Fumbling for his tablet, he swiped the screen. JSunderland01 - useranames weren't his forte - flashed up, and then access to the network was granted.
He didn't know what to say, but he had to say something. Her breath was warm against his cheek, and the scraping of the knife was louder in his ears. Something, anything, to take his mind of off it...
His mind trailed to his first thoughts, and he found something to say. ]
How do we know we have to keep moving?
["James... I'm real." Soft. Warm. ]
Not everyone can experience the same thing, right?
[ OPTION 4 ]
[ He has to leave immediately. That's what the message on his tablet says.
The only problem is that he can't remember... well, anything. Where was 'here'? It looked like a chapel of some kind; small, cold, and abandoned. Eerie. That was all he could tell.
... Not entirely abandoned, actually. There was someone there. Pushing himself off of the pew, James approached. ]
Sorry, but... I don't know where I am. [ He faltered for a moment, unsure of how to continue. After a beat, he rallied, but his voice was stilted, mirroring his own embarrassment. ] Do you?
[This building had been a miraculous discovery in a world of dilapidated buildings steadily falling disrepair. Its suspicious is what Light has concluded, but he's also low on supplies and there are better ways to die than starvation and hypothermia.
He makes his way into the interior of the building (or so he'd thought) until he's addressed directly by a stranger - a man he's never seen in is life - fiddling around by the fireplace. Instinctively his gloved fingers tighten around the rusted pipe he's taken from another house as a makeshift weapon; wandering around alone defenseless would have been unbelievably short sighted on his part and the single scrap of note he has on him is too precious to use haphazardly. If he'd been more impulsive with the death note, he'd have realized earlier on that it won't work here, but that's a future disaster waiting to unfold.
The question receives a fractionally raised eyebrow, but incredulousness gives way to bitterness as quickly as it starts. It's cold outside - colder than Light is used to in Tokyo, and any thought of "trouble" is a remote joke at best.
Perhaps it would put Kristoff at ease to see that his unexpected company was built more like a runner than a quarterback. Perhaps not; Light hasn't let go of the pipe yet.]
No. [There's a certain finality in his tone neither soothing nor aggressive, but guarded and carefully neutral.] I'm not.
Kimbley shrugs at that. "Well obviously someone fucked up." He's clearly not dead. He should be dead, but he figures that's not something Greed needs to know, so he doesn't bother saying it. He's not going to try to bring the point up again when Greed turns to leave though, and instead shrugs again and follows the Homunculus.
"So how long do you think I can go before I freeze? That'll definitely happen before I starve to death." Talking about his own death so casually is never something that's bothered Kimbley. There's something in his eyes - it's not excitement, but it's close. He's not fond of the cold, but it is interesting to think about what freezing to death would be like.
"You charge into danger so often, who can blame a guy? It must have been a hell of a night. You remember any of it?" Greed's still not sure where he is and doesn't think he can find his way around place covered in snow, but it's starting to feel familiar. Maybe he's been here for a while, because he's never seen any place that looks like this in Amestris.
"Hypothermia doesn't sound like a pleasant way to die," Greed says conversationally. Kimbley being morbid doesn't bother him at all. "Let's focus on shelter first, hmm?"
At least he sounds amused, even if Greed's gaze does flicker every once in a while to Kimbley, making sure he isn't shivering too badly.

He does note the pipe. It doesn't erase any concern that she's armed. He has seen some pretty tricky sheathes in his time, most homemade and rigged for surprise. The itinerant life is a dangerous one.
"Yea, you could say that." He's about as far from formality as they get, and the thought of trying to pronounce either name she gave him is already tying his head in knots. Sounds Jap, like some of the cooks who've fed him up and down the work line through the years. He frowns to himself and decides not to try unless it becomes necessary. If he butchers it, she'll probably correct him.
"I wouldn't say no to a smoke." He draws a long sliver of wood from the base of the fire and leans to hold it for her. The flame at the end flickers without going out.
I'm alright. You should save your supplies for someone who really needs it. With the weather this bad, I'm sure we'll run into someone who needs help sooner or later. [Thankfully, she knows how to handle the snow, and has avoided any injury herself so far.
Korra glances out the window, where the snow and wind has turned everything into just a blur of white.]
I wonder how many of us are actually around here. It's hard to tell with everyone scattered like this.
[Korra checks the door as he talks--it's still locked, just like she'd expected.]
I can keep you company until we can leave the buildings again. I don't think I'll be getting much sleep anyway, and it's better to talk to someone when you're alone like this, right?
[There's a soft, drawn out sigh.]
After that... maybe we could look for each other while it's light out. I haven't had any luck finding anyone else in this place, but I know there are others around.
