Network Prompts ONE: A LONG WALK HOME You wake up at 6AM when lockdown ends, cold and tired, like you've been walking miles in the snow. But that's normal, isn't it? What isn't normal is your surroundings. You're in a new building, maybe one you've never seen before, or one you know is far, far away from where you were the night before when you fell asleep. If you were traveling with someone, you notice, also, that you are alone. There's no telling where your traveling companion could be. When you check the network, you notice that @ADMIN has left a message. Surveillance encountered an error shortly after 8PM last night and was out of order until shortly after 6AM. We apologize for any inconvenience. Whether or not you're confused or concerned about the message, maybe a post to the network will help you re-orient yourself. TWO: GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE... Seems you've found a rather valuable commodity. Something like alcohol, tea, coffee, cigarettes, or perhaps even something medical. Whatever you've found, you have no real interest in it, yourself. But you know that there's a market for it, and you see the opportunity to turn this into a win-win situation. You're not physically around anyone that you know of, so you propose a network-wide trade. And whoever makes the sweetest deal can be the proud owner of their craved luxury. Action Prompts THREE: A SYMPHONY OF SOUND You and your traveling companion thought that the house you decided to stop in for the night seemed normal enough. But lockdown hits, as it does every night, and things start to get strange. Soft sounds of crying; children crying, parents crying, screaming for their own safety. Maybe it's just the sound of the wind rushing so hard through the rubble you fear the ceiling will collapse. Maybe it's your own voice whispering to you to do awful things. Whatever the noise is, it's too much for you to fall asleep, coming to eerie crescendos and ebbing in volume at entirely irregular intervals. Looks like you and whoever you're with are in for a long night. FOUR: IN DUE TIME After a grueling day of travel, you and your companion finally come across safe shelter. And it seems to be a nice house, too, with a working fireplace and everything. The only strange part is that you aren't alone--but the other people in the house don't seem to be aware of you. In fact, they don't seem to be aware of anything; they're frozen in time, unmoving, unblinking, not even breathing. They can be touched, but they can't be moved. No matter how hard you try, they're rooted to the spot. They seem to be like you, weighed down with heavy winter wear and backpacks, not like the nondescript shadowy people that wander the town. Oh well. They're probably harmless, and it isn't like you have time to find a different place to stay.

[Getting used to having a humanoid body again has been hard enough. Waking up so terribly achey just reminds her of the many other reasons that being a human was sometimes such a chore. She looks around and sees...well, a whole lot of nothing, really. Like a big empty box. When she listens, she can't really hear the wind blowing outside. Regrettably, she finds herself on the hard, chilled floor, as well.

When she turns the video feed on, Catherine doesn't show her own face. She just shows the interior of building 134, panning slowly around to show that the entire room is empty.] Hey. Anyone recognize this place? I've never been here before; it looks pretty different from the houses I've seen.

I found two packs of cigarettes in one of the stores. I don't smoke, so I don't need them. [She's very matter-of-fact in her presentation. Not arrogant about her find, but not exactly flippant about it, either.] I'd be willing to trade them, if anyone else wants them.

[Maybe some time ago, she would have offered them up for free. Or, more likely, she would have kept the find to herself, not wanting to be bothered with the trouble of awkwardly giving such a luxury to a stranger. But she needs to survive if she's going to make sure the ARK still gets launched, so she doesn't mind doing it this way.]

[Well, of course the human isn't smoking, so far she still has to find any of those... strange creatures who can emit visible gas of any sort but maybe those are props for smoke emitting creatures to reduce the level of flames and emissions? Maybe that could be useful for her world's dragons when the decide to take a nap and cover a city's sky for years with their... snores? While the unicorn isn't really interested in trading she has to ask.]

[It's not something that actually matters that much - a cigarette is a cigarette, here, and he can't really afford to be picky about much of anything - but it might give him a frame of reference.]

[You're in luck, Norfinbury. Today, Regina George is gracing all of you with one of her trademark smiles--and not the kind where you can tell that there's pure evil in her eyes, either. This is a smile that says, "there's something I want from you, so I'm going to pretend to be on my best behavior so you'll be completely charmed and won't suspect a thing". No life ruining today. Probably. Whatever.]

I've got a surprise, are you ready?

[She puts the tablet a bit farther away from her on the ground so her viewers can get a lovely spread of the delights she's been saving. There's an eclectic selection of various interesting finds, and she displays them all with a graceful grave of her slender hand--she could be a professional hand model, it looks so catalog.

There's a nautical spyglass in its own case: probably someone's office decoration at one point. A hedge cutter: the blades look like they may need a bit of sharpening, but they're thick. A pair of steel-toed work boots: they're men's, and seem to be a fairly large size. They're worn, but still formidable. Three cigars in a wooden case. A roll of duct tape: there's still plenty left. One first aid kit. Two sewing kits.]

Now, let's talk. I want beauty supplies: makeup, skin, hair, hygiene, fragrance, anything. And I want things you can use for scrapbooking. Any questions?

[She sounds so patient, but it's clear that she means business, and she doesn't intend to beat around the bush.]

[Regina has been trying to be good, and make a good impression, because the nicer you are, the better you can manipulate people. It's important to make your subjects like you, no matter how annoying or poorly-dressed they may be. Especially here. Networking and a little bit of sugar can go a long way.

But late in the night, she cracks. She lets out a cry that sounds almost animal--a scream that tapers off into a sort of growl, and she swings her backpack against the wall--slams it with all her might.]

Shut up! Shut up! Nobody cares how sad you are! You're dead! Get over it and get an afterlife and stop [whack] crying [whack] where nobody [whack] wants to hear it!

[Regina feels like she hasn't slept in days. Weeks, maybe. She's not keeping track. But she needs this. She needs her rest. Her beauty sleep, if you will, not that she needs sleep to be beautiful--that just comes naturally.]

I'm so over this!

[In a final act of age-telling childishness, she throws her backpack across the room, abandoning it. And the crying is still going.]

[Man alive, does Zach understand an outburst like the one Regina's having right now. The voices, the crying, the tapping, the footsteps, the growling, the weird animal noises, all of them everywhere like this place wants you to never ever sleep, ever again, slowly descend into madness and never find your way out.

Man, does he know. But it can't help anyone if she hurts herself, so Zach surges forward when Regina throws her backpack away, grabbing her arms gently and pulling her away from the wall.]

Hey, hey, calm down! Throwing a tantrum's not going to help you, an it won't make it stop.

[Fact is, Zach's got earplugs. They're not in the best shape or anything, and he hasn't been using them since he found himself traveling with Regina - he doesn't need her to claw them out of his ears, thank you very much, he knows exactly what kind of girl she is, and she'd totally do that. But he knows that if he offers them to her, he'll never see them ever again.]

Look, you need to calm down. Distract yourself. Don't listen to it, it just makes it worse.

[It's a living nightmare, and so far, everything has been hell.

Their tablet is near-useless to them- the prime method of communication is inaccessible for Frisk, and their best hope is luck. And though they found shelter they might as well have stayed outside to die.

There's screams everywhere. In echoes in the walls and reverberates in their ears. Cries for mercy and dying pleads that they can't do anything about except try to ignore them and tremors seem to rock the entire building as the wind howls, counting sins. Frisk is trying so hard to sit still and not lose their mind, but it's a losing battle. That's not Papyrus' voice, is it…? Monster Kid?

Being blind isn't helping, either.]

[Finally, a quiet house. They stumble in, it's actually quite warm- oh, is there a fireplace going? That means there's someone else here. They hope they aren't trespassing or anything, but in a place like this they can't imagine anyone pushing away company. They keep blindly walking around like an idiot, trying to feel for a chair or a stool or generally anywhere to sit down.

Then they bump into something. Pat, pat. Wait, someone.]

O-oh! Sorry, I didn't see you there.

[No reply.]

They aren't moving, they seem stuck in time.

[Twilight was supposed to stay only long enough to warm her poor rear, despite being covered by fur the pony only got a small coat from... whoever gave them their starting belongings in the city, leaving half of her bosy exposed. Oh, she even got trousers, mind you, but they were all human sized... and totally useless. Anyway, what was supposed to be only a short stop during the morning turned out being a whole da of research on immoble humans she poked them, she pushed them around, she even tried to get one of them's finger to bleed, yet nothing happened. The strangers, because they weren't someone she say on the network so far, were like statues despite conserving the typical body warmt of living creatures.]

It's so fascinating... I've seen this happening before on the network, people who were here before experienced some sort of time distortion where they felt everything moving slowly, but this? This is incredible!

[The voice is excited and there is the sound of hooves hitting the wooden floor of the house, whatever is near Frisk is definitely approaching.]

I've never seen anything like this! I've been here all day and they didn't move at all! [She's literally trotting around him, now, not even completely aware of the door shutting finally close behind her.] And the fireplace! I didn't add a single log in it and it's been burning for the whole day! Oh, Sweet Celestia, I wish I had a proper notebook and some kind of pencil to write down all the things I noticed today!

[Alfie is decidedly not her traveling companion, but he's been rummaging around in the back rooms of the building, and when he hears someone talking he comes out to investigate.

He gives her a look up and down, then shakes his head.]

You're wasting your time on them.

[Well then! Red isn't much of a snack food person, sweets aren't her thing, but she is sure that someone on the network might appreciate it. Maybe she can get something good for them.

First off, Red posts a short video to the network. It consists entirely of her, smirking and holding up the three chocolate bars she found. The brands are unrecognizable to her, but maybe someone else is familiar with them.

After that, she switches to text, so that she can communicate.]

As you can see, I've found three candy bars of some sort.

[Though she is sure that the sounds of children crying are meant to unnerve her and her traveling partner, but they don't have that effect on her. Instead, she can't help but feel sorry for them. Whatever happened to them in the past to make them haunt this home with their crying, it must have been terrible.

Thanks to the Camerata, Red can no longer offer any words of comfort to the disembodied cries. But she can still hum, and she hums a little tune to try and calm the crying. Or maybe to calm herself and her companion here down instead? The crying of the dead can gets to the living very quickly.]

[Catherine isn't too terribly bothered by the sounds. She finds the implications of the cries to be more distressing than the actual noise, and since she's been able to convince herself that it's not real, that means there's no reason to feel upset about it.

Regardless, it is hard to ignore, because it gets so loud at times. So she appreciates when her quiet companion offers a more soothing alternative to listen to. After a few moments of listening attentively, she picks up her tablet to send Red a message; it feels more natural for her to communicate this way than speaking aloud and waiting for Red to answer.]

Being an horse Twilight's ears has always been finer than any human's and even considering how the City took magic and most of her natural skills away Oh, she almost feels like an animal now, unable to grab firmly any item, she can still turn her ears around separately and focus on more than a single sound source at time- which is- unpleasant in such a building. She rasped more than once against the wall with her hooves, she tried to sniff the wooden floor to locate... anything but in the end the unicorn just curled in a corner, trying to let the night pass.

"Mmmh?"

Both her ears suddenly turn in Red's direction when she starts to hum and after a moment even her head turns: it can't really distract her from the cries of the dead, it doesn't seem to offer any real comfort to whoever is haunting the house but it's something and perhaps if Twilight manages to focus enough on that she will be able to calm down and study the situation a bit better, maybe even find some clues.

"Please, don't stop."

[The humming naturally catches Toriel's attention, earning a soft smile from the boss monster. She listens to Red hum, slowly joining the young woman after catching onto just how the song goes.

Toriel herself cannot speak in this moment, but she can hum weakly. The house around them begins to quiet somewhat.]

[ There's a couple of seconds of grouchy mumbling coming from off screen as Royce picks at the device in his hands. Technology is irritating and he's not sure he likes it, but he'll use it if he must. Which... he must, at the moment. He doesn't show his face, but the camera is steadily filming a bottle of wine on the table in front of him. His voice is soft, but firm. ]

I found this. Wine. I couldn't tell you how old it is because I don't know how long ago 1984 was. I don't like the taste of it, but I figure someone out there might find it less disgusting.

I need food, and I don't care what kind. Give me an offer.

[ No thank you, just an abrupt ending! ]

[ More than anything, Royce is irritated about the volume of the voices.

The cries of children don't bother him. Annoy him, maybe, but it's easy to tune them out. Every once in a while, there's a voice that sometimes sounds like his own (and sometimes, like Gwen's) that whispers to him, right against his ear - tells him to raise Alverstone to his traveling partner and end it right now. That, too, is easy to ignore, because Royce can't see the logic in killing his partner when they've been here longer and thus, have more information than him. It'd be stupid to call attention to himself. Not to mention the fact that he doesn't have Alverstone.

Maybe the whispers aren't so different from his normal thought process, honestly. Whatever. It's logical for his partner to stay alive, so alive they stay.

Royce looks unbothered and even bored, sitting with his legs kicked up on the table, crossed at the ankle. His arms are folded and his hood is up. He barely moves except to breathe, staring at the wall with a vaguely irritated expression on his face.

After a moment, he glances at his partner, tsking quietly. ] Does it bother you?

[Steve's face pops up on the screen, looking interested and cautiously excited. Wine! He would very much love to have some wine to share with Peggy.]

Wow. ...Probably about a hundred years old, give or take a few decades. Which means it's either really amazing, or vinegar. ...Gosh I hope it's not vinegar.

Food I've got. It's school cafeteria food, so it's hardly five-star cuisine, but I've sure as heck had worse. It's healthy and filling, at the very least. Three days' worth sound fair?

[Honestly if this guy doesn't have any food, Steve would happily just give him some. He's not going to say no to free wine, though, especially if the fella doesn't even like the stuff.]

I am quite certain this is not where I ended up last night. While rushing to find shelter before lockdown is not typically my plan, I know workout doubt that this building is not where I attempted sleep last night.

And before anyone asks--no, it is not only because I rearranged the furniture to suit my preferred aesthetic. There was a single broken chair...not much to do with that.

THREE (Action/Video)

[Let's face it. You're traveling companion? He's a little bit of an odd duck. Strange things bother him--it's not being stranded in the arctic cold but the fact that such weather bothers him; it's never the decaying houses themselves but instead the haphazard arrangement of furniture within them.

Death the Kid is a creative and ingenious little problem solver, but that does not change the fact that he is hell to travel with. As hypothermia has set in, his...eccentricities seem to only have gotten worse, as well, and now the teen is awkwardly fumbling with his tablet in his bare hands, all his fingertips beginning to look a threatening shade of purple as his eyes stared at the screen.]

Has anyone noticed these houses aren't empty anymore? [Kid doesn't realize he's turned his device on, broadcasting his nonchalant question to the network.] There seem to be people here all of the time now, and they can't seem to be quiet. You've heard them too, right?

[It had taken a week for Stein to meet up with Kid. He'd slogged through too much snow, taken too few breaks, and generally wrecked his already failing health to get to the same corner of this frozen hellscape as his student.

The idea had been to rest for a day or two, then head off downtown, to the grocery store and the bakery. Instead, he's in a house he doesn't recognize, without Death the Kid. Of course, it doesn't take long before the young god posts.]

Everyone's been moved. Can you send a video of your current location?

[This wasn't right. This wasn't the building that he'd been in when he fell asleep..was it? Nothing looked right and there had definitely been someone else with him when lockdown had rolled around.

But now? Nothing.

Sora looks one part confused and one part unnerved when he appears over the network, casting glances beyond the view of the camera as he tries to make sense of things.]

Did anyone else wake up in a completely different place than where they spent the night? Because I'm pretty sure this isn't where I was before.

[He stops moving and turns the camera to show the view of the cabin before tilting the device again so he can peer at it.]

Finally!

[Sora had to resist the urge to outright cheer as they finally reached the cabin they'd been trekking towards. His feet and hands were frozen to the point of barely being able to move but that didn't stop the young man from rushing forwards and leading the way inside the nice warm--

...Ghost..house.

His steps halted as he found himself in the main room of the cabin, his focus initially having been the fire but something else caught his eye before he could get to it. There were people, several of them, scattered about the room seemingly frozen in time. Sora felt his heart twist with worry and he started to move towards one of them only to pause.]

What's wrong with them?

[He has no idea if his companion will have answers but it had to be asked.]

Did someone use a spell on them?

[A fairly recent arrival, Alfie has been wandering, still getting the lay of the land. He's been staying indoors most of the time - that's where most of the supplies seem to be, and he's not really a fan of the snow - but there are various things he'll venture out for, and he's just spotted one of them. Somebody is walking by outside the building he's currently in. He hurries to the door and out into the snow, walking with his cane without leaning on it, and calls out in a gravelly voice:]

Hey, you. Yeah, you.

[If he can get his mark to turn around and face him, he'll point at them, repeating himself for good measure:]

You.

What'll you trade for that, then?

[Now he points at the most noticeable thing that they're carrying, no matter what it is - a piece of food, an article of clothing, a broken object, a child's toy. It might be something that he actually wants, but more likely, it's not the thing itself he's interested in - he wants to know what the reaction to his asking will be. Helpful? Trusting? Suspicious? Defensive?

If he's going to be stuck with these people, he wants to know how each and every one of them ticks.]

[Fiona stops when she hears someone call out to her, turning to look over her shoulder. He seems to be pointing to a length of rope coiled up and clipped to her pack. Certainly useful, but since it's half rotting through, she doubts it's what he really rushed out of the house for. She turns, head tilting and eyebrows raising as she does while she tries to get a read on his body language. That cane that he's not using for support—a weapon, or a terrible attempt at faking an injury? The clear attempt to get her to stop and get a reaction from her means she's already suspicious, although she's sure to keep her expression largely unconcerned, if a little surprised.]

"Hey you" isn't a great way to make someone want to trade with you.

[It's condom post, round two. The box of MAGNUM XXL GLOWING CONDOMS (ribbed for her pleasure) looks absurdly small in Pohatu's hand. He is, after all, over eight feet tall and made of brown and tan metal (even the organic parts, the muscles and tendons hidden inside the mechanical components, are vaguely metallic).]

Does anyone want these? [His warm, friendly voice has that (by now familiar to the network) hint of confusion that comes from the (by now familiar to the network) culture clash that happens at essentially every moment that Toa Pohatu interacts with anything human. Being a biomechanical alien from a tropical island makes for a lot of teaching opportunities, some more absurd than others.]

I don't have any idea what they're worth, but I found three boxes.

[He hates the network. It's not secure. It's monitored by persons unknown with equally unknown affiliations. It makes the user a target, vulnerable. He barely uses it except to keep track of the people who are foolish enough to use it. He's tried getting rid of the tablet, but it never seems to work for long.

Not wanting his real name to show up for all and sundry to see, he had entered a random string of letters when he first arrived. Better than a word which may be associated with him, this was harder to track, harder to trace. Safer.

Waking up somewhere new is not unusual, but it is concerning. He thought he had it under control, clearly he was wrong. But then there was that message, so perhaps it hadn't been his fault after all. He needs to make sure and the only way to do that is to ask.]

Last night. What do you remember?

[He keeps his message as succinct as possible. Short and to the point to hide identifying patterns and minimise the time spent actually using this thing.]

[He travels alone, it's safer that way and there are people here who he isn't ready to face. It didn't take long to learn the rules of this place, simple survival by any means necessary in brutal conditions. Familiar, easy to cope with. The house is one he hasn't seen before, but he doesn't have time to do his usual scouting reconnaissance to make sure it's empty and not booby-trapped in any way. Night is coming and he has no other choice.

He bites back a startled noise when the door opens to reveal a multitude of people.

On guard at once, muscles tense and coiled. He's ready to defend himself in a heartbeat. None of them are moving, and so he moves cautiously into the room. It's the first flicker of movement from whoever else had found this house first as a shelter that pulls him into action.

He swings around, gloved fist flying out without hesitation or mercy.

Sorry, other random resident seeking shelter for the night.]

[When his fist comes up, Peggy reacts instantly, bringing up her forearm and blocking his blow, her face set in a hard frown.]

[She says his name in a biting manner, brokering no argument. They have to be here for the evening, together, and she knows - she knows about James. Steve was...extensive in the way he explained what happened to Sgt Barnes, and Peggy's heart breaks a little as she sees the haunted look in his eyes.

She drops her arm; if he wants to hit her, she'll dodge, but she'll let him expound the energy if he needs to.]

I'm no enemy, James. We - we actually know each other.
